The B-52's get my vote for Best Stage Show - what a riot! Paula ran a close second. She seemed to be brimming with cheer, dancing really hard, very animated. It was a fairly standard short set: Jolene Throwing Stones Me Cowboys IDWTW Hitler's Brothers but she put a lot into each song. There was a big crowd recognition when she broke into the "Theme From 'Dawson's Creek,'" lots of people singing along. It was easily the most diverse crowd I've seen Paula play for, due to the diversity of acts. I think it's fair to say she gave the best performance of all. Sarah played without c Camille and her guitarists, and I think the bass and organ/piano player were not her usual oneseither. At least Ash was there to sing someharmonies. It was interesting to hear her voice carry the melodies mostly unaccompanied, but the harmonies she achieves with Camille and the boys are really something else. Here's her set list: Possession Building A Mystery Hold On Good Enough Adia Angel (solo) If you think these sets are short you are not alone. Paula was scheduled for 40 min - more than anyone else - and Sarah for 30 min, and I think they each played for 25. And for you keeping score, Sarah did not come out t o sing with Lisa Loeb on "Falling In Love." Lisa played either solo or with Dweezil Zappa. Less seemed to be the order of the day, as many acts went with slimmer or acoustic backup. I'm sure this is how they managed to put some two dozen acts on in one day. Some of the big names performed to backing tracks rather than cart their bands in for just one song - which is all Mariah and Shania did. At least Shania played a guitar. They really should have billed them as "Special Appearance By . . ." instead of as actual performers. I felt gypped. In fact, Mariah made the wierdest star turn I've ever encountered. After presenting the big check to the charity and singing her one song, she made her appearance at the press tent. All performers scheduled time for the press; Mariah allowed the press a total of 6 minutes divided among three locations. Hold on, it hasn't gotten wierd yet. First, everyone entering the tent at this time was instructed there were to be no photos. Then everyone was told to sit down or Mariah wouldn't come in. We had to wait till the B-52's finished their interviews, because she didn't want any other performers present. Finally she breezed through, did her obligatory station ID, did a couple of interview with her back to the room, and took off. She hardly signed any autgraphs, keeping her contact with fans to a minimum. This imperious, haughty, nearly paranoid demeanor seemed very much at odds with what I'd been led to believe about her personality. Surprises: Sister Hazel and Matchbox 20 were pretty good; Ben Folds Five were pretty boring; Meredith Brooks CAN play guitar (how do these rumors start?); Mariah Carey's ego trip (more on this later); Backstreet Boys got the biggest crowd response; The Tuesdays showed up and did a station ID and meet & greet, though they were not scheduled to play; I stayed till the end. No surprise: Paula was the best; Sarah has a beautiful voice; I wish they'd played longer; Vonda Shepard was great. Sharley, you have to go see her. What a soulful voice. And really nice too - signed all three of my CD's, al though she was rushed. I'm sorry I missed her when she played in NY last week. I'd really like to see her in a club or other more focussed setting. Awards for Miss Congeniality: Rebekah and Billie Myers (tie). They were both very easy to talk with, just like someone who lived on your block. The radio stationg got most of the performers to do station ID's, and Billie brought along her flute player and a singer for hers. They improvised a little musical ID, all the way through the Merry Christmas one, which was hilarious. Nice of her to make the extra effort and do something special for their host. And to settle the Pay-Per-View question: most of the big-name acts did not give their permission to PPV, for whatever reason. These included Sarah, Paula, Mariah, Backstreet Boys, Matchbox 20, Rebekah, Lionel Richie (one of the special surprise guests - the other was Olivia Newton-John), and a couple of others. So the biggest acts on PPV were The B-52's, Meredith Brooks, Third Eye Blind, Billie Myers, Jonny Lang, Vonda Shepard, Ben Folds Five - not enough for me. I'd set up my VCR to tape it, figuring I would just call to order it once I knew who would be on it. I just never called. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Sorry, no fashion report. Maybe after I get some sleeeep . . . I completely agree with your comments...especially those about Mariah Carey. I was appaled at how much of a "Diva" she was...both her on stage demeanor, and from what I heard, she made EVERYONE clear the stage area, and go INTO their dressing room while she was on stage. She whined about having to sing (to the audience!) and then grudgingly sang one tune with a track. I also heard that she made EVERYONE that was allowed to remain go to stage left, because she says that is her "good" side, and didn't want to be seen from the right. I think she lost a LOT of fans. I didn't get to see everyone, as I was back and forth talking to Jay, but as you said, Sarah was great. I think her choice of songs for such a show probably should have been more "upbeat"..I know the people sitting around us got ..shall we say distracted..after the first 3, when she did several ballads. It was at least half way into the day...and it certainly was a long day! I too enjoyed Vonda Shephard, and .. I'm afraid to admit it..but really liked Blessid Union of Souls! And I noticed they were really nice backstage too! paula - ---------- From: "Steve Bornstein" To: harbinger Subject: (harbinger) Great Woods Date: Sun, May 31, 1998, 4:13 AM Hi Paula -You wrote: > >...All I can say is...it was an awesome day, an INCREDIBLE performance by >Paula and Company... >and the B52's ROCKED!!! :) paula :) You darn tootin'! Oh-mi-gawd! Just when I thought I'd learned how to live in a world with Spice Girls in it, I have to figure out howto go on without them - oh, pooh!! Sounds like a brilliant career move. Maybe she will meet up with David Caruso in the unemployment line. I'm sorry, did somebody care? Peace JourneyBear Here's the entire press release regarding No Ginger in the rack?? LONDON, May 30 (Reuters) - Britain's popular newspapers have insisted that the Spice Girls are on the brink of an official split, despite denials from some members of the pop group. They said "Ginger Spice" -- Geri Halliwell -- has vowed never to sing with the group again, and may confirm her decision to embark on a solo career as soon as this weekend. "Geri quits," the Daily Mirror announced in its early Saturday editions. "Ginger Spice, 25, has hired a legal team for her split from the world's top band," its rival, the Sun, added. The speculation about the future of Britain's biggest girl group has reached fever pitch since Ginger Spice -- the brains behind the quintet -- failed to show up for a concert in Oslo. She had earlier skipped a London television performance, citing illness. According to the British tabloid press, the group had a midweek row in Helsinki, complete with bawling in an airport lounge, sniping on a private jet and flouncing off on touchdown. "Posh Spice" Victoria Adams earlier told Oslo's daily Dagbladet there was no truth to talk of a split. "Right now Geri is sick and tired. She's just reached the limit." But the Mirror quoted a source close to the band as saying that Ginger Spice's excuse for her absence from the gigs -- that she was suffering from gastroenteritis -- was "just a cover." "She's out. It's a combination of feeling exhausted and wanting to go out on her own," the source said. The Sun said top London lawyer Julian Turton was on his way to meet Ginger Spice in a secret European "bolthole" to discuss her separation from the other four girls - - -- Mel C., Mel B., Victoria and Emma. Its source close to the group -- like the Mirror's anonymous -- said: "The situation looks terminal...She's had enough and wants out." A cleaner turned topless model turned Turkish game show hostess, Ginger is considered the Spice Girl most likely to go solo, especially since becoming the band's unofficial leader after they fired their manager. The group has had six number one hits. Although its success has dimmed somewhat recently, it has netted millions of pounds (dollars) in profits and its first single "Wannabe" is seen by fans as an anthem for Girl Power. Hey, don't be afraid. I think one of the best things abouut shows like this - and it offsets the shortness of the sets - is being exposed to acts you probably never would otherwise. Now while I ran for cover when Backstreet Boys came on, I did catch Sister Hazel and stayed till the end, risking getting caught in the traffic jam, to catch Matchbox 20, neither of whom I would have gone out of my way to see otherwise, but both of whom I liked OK. I missed BUS on stage - I think I was tracking down Rebekah - but I saw/heard them on a monitor and they seemed fine. I think Sarah's choice of songs was determined by her backup - or lack thereof - so while she did what she could, it was not the usual fabulous. I think the "Siurfacing" album also suffers from being ballad-heavy - though "Angel" and "I Love You" are wonderful by any standards. You can still be surprised, and that's what these were, to me anyway - a) it's not a surprise that sister hazel and matchbox 20 were good, they ARE good What I'd seen/heard of them - talk show appearances - hadn't impressed me, nor made me run for cover, so I checked them out and I'm glad I did. I still may not get their CD's, but I won't think ill of them either. 2) ben folds is only boring if you don't like him or don't know what he's about Ditto about BF5, but in this case I didn't care for them live either. So now when I say he's boring perhaps to you that means I don't like him or don't know what he's about. I can live with that. There are so many good musicians out there I can't possibly know everything about every one, but I've had enough of this one. Maybe someday I'll change my mind - hey, maybe someday I'll like Phi Collins. Who knows ? The future is unwritten. That's just my opinion - everyone's entitled to their opinion. c) meredith can play the guitar, she just can't sing (her band sounds great, her voice dosn't) That was supposed to be a joke. She's OK, somewhat limited but certainly enjoyable, and also ssemed like a very nice person with a spunky personality - definitely not boring.
