I saw that "Meren Ord" is confirmed to play in the lineup of Lilith Fair. Has anyone heard of her and could you private email me what you think of her music if you have heard it? (She has two songs on some compilation album that supposedly sold fairly well in Canada.) Also, just a note to file under the "it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission" heading... ;) I have been thinking of this "Ask Phil what Paula thinks of bootlegs" thread and have some my own bullheaded ostrich head in the sand opinions on it. Don't ask what an artist thinks of having bootlegs if you don't want to know the answer. It is great that Jewel and some others don't mind the taping of concerts...more power to them. But bootlegging to me is a very grey area. Most people would not buy bootleg copies of CDs that are readily available in the stores. (What is the point of saving $5 for an inferior copy?) But compilations like "Diffidence" are not so cut and dried as the boot of "Hush." You see, you can't buy "Hush" through normal channels, so Paula loses zero money when you buy that boot (unless that would prevent you from purchasing "Lilith" because you already had a live copy of "Mississippi" on "hush" (although the Lilith performance of it is my personal favorite). But with Diffidence, you have many songs that are able to be purchased separately..."Autumn Leaves" from "Midnight", the demos from the "Imago Sampler", "last november" from the "Ordinary" single, "Suwannee Jo" from the "Blue in the Face"....Stuff that if you purchase from the normal channels would bring additional income to Paula The gray area is that the CD also contains tracks not available through normal channels. Personally, I don't have a dilemma buying Diffidence since I have already purchased all of the tracks that are available through commercial channels. I want to have all of the tracks on one cd rather than have them spread over six or seven cds. But if someone comes out and says, "Paula does not like or approve of bootleg recordings and asks that her fans do not support, tape, or purchase any of these shows"...unfortunately, I would probably still seek out the live recordings because I enjoy her music so much that I would put my wishes above hers. Selfish? Absolutely. And here is the evil justification line... is it much different than having your buddy tape a CD for you that you INTEND to buy, but maybe never get around to it? I guess my point is that everyone has their own feelings on bootlegs. Some are for, some against, some don't have an opinion, and still others think you need to review the pros and cons of each boot. My opinion is that you lay out the facts of the pros and cons and let each person decide for themself what they want to do. Just some food for thought.
