She received a tape of the music from producer/co-writer John Leventhal but had trouble finding words for it. She started with: 40 red men come into my room 40 red men make me listen John said "It doesn't sound like a song about 40 red men. We need a hit." (This reminds me of the famous story about "Yesterday." Paul McCartney first used the words, "Scrambled eggs, they were runny and ran down my leg" as a means of remembering the melody until he wrote the lyrics.) They kind of put it aside, finished the rest of the album, including the artwork, even the album title. Then Shawn tried this: A few small repairs are in order here That didn't work. Then Shawn started thinking about why she liked the painting. "It's a nice picture, but the woman is a little disturbed. She's got two eyes on one side of her head and one eye in the other, she's got a lit match and a big fire. Why do I like this picture? Cos she's being mischievous, she did something. What are all the things I'd like to do but I'll never be able to, all the times I feel really mad, feel really evil. So, I finally came up with the right idea. And I said, 'John, all I need now is an intro.'" Well, John had an intro, all right, and the rest is rock 'n' roll history. The audience for this is all kids, Eric's age and younger. BTW, Eric, my niece Laura is exactly one year older than you, born 9/22/84! And the Talking Head song she does is "This Must Be The Place," which I'm not really familiar with. She does it her own way, have no fear. It's a very nice show, and will probably show up again. Look for a listing for Storytellers that's only a half hour. I got this 2-CD set the other day in the mail and it is even better than _Grace_. With the exception of a few songs on the second disc which sound like Jeff definitely wasn't finished with them yet, these songs are just so great. Most of the first disc is comprised of soft, smooth, emotional ballads along the lines of "Lilac Wine" and "Hallelujah." The second disc gets harder (more like "Mojo Pin" although not quite that far into the rough stuff) and pales somewhat in comparison to the first disc, but it's still good. I found a site on the internet that has .wav, .aiff and RealAudio clips if you'd like to check out some little snippets of the songs. The clips are at: http://www.jeffbuckley.com/SKETCHES May 29th marks the one-year anniversary of Jeff's death. The release of this new album does a lot to keep the memory of Jeff and his inimitable music alive. If you have been doubtful of whether or not this new CD set was going to do justice to Jeff, worry no more. I can't believe he wouldn't be happy with it even though it probably isn't exactly how he wanted it. Another of my (and many others') favorites, Happy Rhodes, is scheduled to release her new album _Many Worlds Are Born Tonight_ on August 11th. What a long wait!! :^( As some of you already know, the release of a new album from Happy was delayed because it took so many months to find a label that would allow her the creative freedom she had with Aural Gratification. She signed with Samson Music last October and the new album is now on the way. If you'd like to check out the track listing and album cover (along with other information about Happy and the new CD) go to the Terra Incognita website at: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/3450/terra.html No sound clips there and I'm a little bummed that she didn't include the cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" that she sometimes does in concert (one of the best covers I've ever heard done anywhere by anyone), but it's still a great site and well worth a visit if you are into Happy's music. In addition to their usual eclectic playlist, they often have daily themes, and every DJ takes the theme and runs with it. This is taking the notion of a "concept album" a step or two further, as any artist can be thrown into the mix. They are an original, innovative voice, a forward-looking throwback to the heyday of progressive radio in the '70's. I first heard "I Don't Want To Wait" on WFUV - while everyone else was playing "Cowboys," they played this as an album track. I live on the fringe of its broadcast range, in New Haven, and pick it up for the last half of my commute in the morning to Stratford. ( I also listen to Bridgeport's WPKN, whose programming is more DJ-oriented and thus less predictable.) I often volunteer for errands just so I can tune it in - no radio at work. I just wish they had "City Folk" on the weekends, too.
