But to imply that Lilith founder Sarah McLachlan wanted it that way because she's from Halifax, as Cole does in this weeks Rolling Stone, is just plain stupid. "That's the music that Sarah likes. I mean, she's from Nova Scotia. There's not a lot of hip hop and rap coming from there, you know?" Cole said. Hey, Paula? How about Hip Club Groove? And if it's anti-folk you're after, how about Sloan, Jale, Thrush Hermit and Superfriendz? What about Cape Breton's finest Ashley MacIsaac, for God's sake? He's not freaky enough for you? Cole, incidentally, is from the cultural hub of Rockport, Mass. What a loser. Personally, I really dislike the article. As probably all Paula fans would! Anyway, that's my news! It's a couple of weeks old now, but it's one of the better articles about Paula I've seen. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wednesday, April 15, 1998 Things grow quickly for Paula Cole Venue sizes, airplay and armpit hair all increase following singer's Grammy showing By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun Pop singer Paula Cole racked up seven Grammy nods earlier this year and made history as the first woman to be nominated in the best producer category for her breakthrough album, This Fire. Around the same time, the video for This Fire's first single, Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?, got increased airplay, while another Cole song, I Don't Want To Wait, became the theme for the much-talked-about TV series, Dawson's Creek. "Life has changed," says Cole, 30, on the phone from her New York home prior to Sunday night's show at Convocation Hall. "The venue sizes are all a lot bigger. The fans are more over-the-top and the album sales are really good (1.2 million in the U.S. compared to 50,000 in Canada) and airplay's great. I feel very blessed." However, Cole claims she still has to promote herself -- at least north of the border. Convocation Hall is only about half-sold. "I'm definitely asking, 'Why is this happening, oh Lord?' " says Cole. "It's always very humbling, but you have to look at it positively. I wish we were booked in smaller places, but I think the promoters got very excited. In Montreal, I'm playing some big place (The Spectrum on Friday night). I know it's just going to look empty. Gosh, maybe I'm creating a really depressing picture here, it's not always like this." For instance, the singer-songwriter-pianist got to pick up her sole Grammy, for best new artist, from presenter Aretha Franklin. They even got to hang out backstage. "Aretha, Sting and me all waiting for our cars in this tiny hallway," says Cole with a laugh. "We posed for a picture together and I just had to tell her how thankful I was for her influence in my life. And then I think I went away and cried because it was all a bit overwhelming. It felt like such a gift." Meeting Franklin took some of the sting out of the fact that Cole, along with Lilith Fair mates Sarah McLachlan and Shawn Colvin, had to sing abbreviated versions of their nominated hits during the Grammy show. "When I showed up everyone came up to me and said, 'You got screwed,' " says Cole. "Of course I was mad, but that minute-and-a-half, damn it all, was going to be my best minute-and-a-half." After the Grammys, however, Cole was subjected to endless jokes about her armpit hair. In fact, when Entertainment Weekly ran a picture of Cole with her armpit hair airbrushed out, she wrote a letter to complain. The magazine responded by publishing her letter and rerunning the picture -- hair intact -- with a note: "Oops! We thought it was just a smudge." "The whole armpit hair thing became such a sensation because of the Grammys," says Cole. "I mean it's been joked about on Conan (O'Brien) For about a week straight, (Jay) Leno was joking about it. He even made a Paula Cole doll with revolving little wheels with armpit hair and he shined his shoes with it. "I guess it struck a funny bone. I guess people are repressed enough about it that it titillated them. I think it's funny, too. But what I don't understand is when people get angry about it. I guess there have been a lot of angry and negative letters coming into Entertainment Weekly about my armpit hair -- that I find very weird." Cole's summer plans include some dates on the H.O.R.D.E. tour and she's also returning to Toronto to play two Lilith shows at the Molson Amphitheatre in August. She has recorded an alternate version of This Fire song Feelin' Love with Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, and says her next album, which she won't record before next year, will include strings and hip-hop. "I have to say I am creatively hungry to make my next record," says Cole. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 May 1998 20:16:51 -0400 From: "Kenn" Subject: (harbinger) Cyberporn Paula Believe it or not, PC is currently a featured nude on at least two websites, one of which is dedicated solely to naked hirsute women. I don't have any kind of AdultCheck ID (and don't intend to get one), so I don't know what they've done to the photos of Paula (which reportedly appear within the iron-clad gates of the sites). I'm pretty sure they've probably airbrushed her head on to someone else's body or something. Perhaps one of you out there has an AdultCheck ID (pervert!) and won't mind visiting the sites so that you can write a little report about what you saw. Here are the websites: http://user4.xxx-hollywood.com/must2/re-33.html http://www.naturalbods.com/adult.htm And before any flames starting licking at my eyebrows.... Am I in any way encouraging any Harbinger list subscribers who are under the age of 18 to visit these sites? No, I'm not. Am I responsible for any those youngsters who will probably go ahead and access the sites anyway? No. No, I'm not. Thankfully, they have parents who should be keeping an eye on such things and (huzzah! huzzah!) I surely am not that parent. Povie, you probably have an AdultCheck ID. Go look and then come back and tell us. ;^) And, Phil.... please.... you have to tell Paula. I want to know what her reaction is. Peace. There was the one from West 54th Sessions, which was cool, but seemed to be focused more on West 54th than Paula. Today, I found a new one that is totally Paula. Go to: http://www.yahoo.freeshop.com/pg00088.htm and download this screensaver from the site. The screensaver shows three successive images (the cover of This Fire, the REQUEST magazine shot of Paula in her apartment and a Warner Brothers stock photo of Paula holding two white roses) while playing WHATCG over your speakers. Very cool screensaver!! If you have any problems downloading the file, email me privately and I'll send you the executable file. Peace.
