Counting that day, I've now seen her live three times (which will be four coming up this summer since she'll be perfoming at the Lilith Fair show in my city). Favorite Paula songs? I'd have to go with "I Am So Ordinary" from Harbinger. Favorite Paula song live? I *love* her cover of "Jolene," and her live performance of "Hitler's Brothers" is absolutely *haunting*. I'm looking forward to my time on the List! Skip to the end for Paula. Saturday morning in Boston, at 9 AM it was warm, sunny, not a cloud in the sky. My friend Jean and I drove up from CT with one of her students, Jen, and picked up her sister Becky at MIT. We thus represented four decades. When we arrived there was still plenty of room to spread our tarp between the sound booth and the stage. In fact, the park was so sparse that Phil spotted us and said "Hi!" before we could - nice personal touch. (BTW, I asked him if any decision had been made about pre-Lilith tour and openers. That idea has been scrapped in favor of joining the HORDE tour. It was a fun game to play, though.) By about 10:30 clouds had moved in, the wind picked up, and the weather looked ominous. At 11 Edwin McCain (solo guitar, from GA) started off OK, but soon the rain hit, and we were under the tarp. It sprinkled on and off during his set and the next, Abra Moore's. She was skinny as a rail, simply dressed in burgundy velour corduroy pants and black long-sleeved T, with her blonde hair tucked under a baseball cap. Her voice was stronger and her band rocked harder than on her album. When she backed off from the mike to let out a loud "hoo!", she looked more like a Texas hick than the hippie chick she looks and sounds like on the album, and that was somehow really cool. After her set we went over to the CD booth, where there was a long line of autograph seekers. In a pattern that was to be repeated throughout the day, she left well before everyone was attended to. The next act was Glenn Frey w/ Max Carl and Big Dance, and since the sky still looked foreboding and we had little or no interest in him, we walked back to the car for more clothing. We got back just in time to miss the tail end of the drum solo, so I think we did well. Best of all, the addition of the warmer clothing ensured that it would not be needed, and it never rained again. 10,000 Maniacs were next. I'd never seen them, and wish I had when Natalie was with them. The first 5-6 songs seemed so similar that they were nearly indistinguishable. Then they launched into "Give Them What They Want" (always works for me), "These Are The Days," "Because The Night," and closed with "Save It For A Rainy Day". Toss out the first half of their set and that's a hard act to follow. That was the task for Chantal Kreviazuk, dressed in navy blue jogging suit and playing solo piano. She started with "God Made Me," a fine song, but not commanding enough, particularly for certain nearby yahoos, who would chatter loudly through her entire set.. Someone applauded for this song with his air horn, and Chantal responded to him by playing a "sing-along" version of "Leaving On A Jet Plane," requesting him to blow his horn when she came to the line in the song. This divergence lasted over six minutes, time much better spent with two of her songs. I know she's young, but this was not smart or professional of her, especially since she was only allowed a half hour. Indeed, she only played 23 minutes, perhaps because they were running late and something had to give. I hope the next time I see her there are more favorable conditions, as she does have a wonderful voice, shown best in her shiver-inducing rendition of "Surrounded." Next up, four songs by local Matthew Ryan, with a solid rock quartet. Nothing special but not bad. But no lead guitar - why have two guitars when noone takes a lead? They would play chords through an instrumental break - I was thinking, this is where a lead would go - and this seems to be a trend, as I've heard this a lot lately. Next came Peter Stuart, leader of Dog's Eye View, by himself on guitar. Dressed in a lime green suit for Earth Day, he tore through a breathless set of cleverly writen songs sung in a half-serious, half-mocking style that suited himself and the material very well. He was the surprise of the day for me; I believe someone has posted about his band. Marc Cohn followed, who is too middle-of-the-road for me, playing piano and keyboard, and accompanied for most of his set by Shane Fontayne on guitar. If you are trying to place that name, let me help. He was a founding member of Lone Justice, second only to Maria McKee as a reason I loved that band. He has since done some extraordinary studio work, including for Dar Williams and Lisa McCormick, but is perhaps best known for backing up Bruce Springsteen on his "Lucky Town" tour, including that thrilling 3-song appearance on SNL. Yes, he was the guy with big curly hair, looking like Marc Bolan of T. Rex, playing most of his solos from a crouch. As far as I'm concerned he is slumming with this gig (sorry, Jill), but I'll bet the money is good. He did get a good crowd response, with people singing along, and apparently it was he whom the yahoos near us had come to see, as for once they shut up and paid attention. But of course, we had come to see Paula. Before her set I asked Becky and Jen what the best show they'd ever seen was, and apart from the concert in progress, they described some hometown performer I didn't know. I told them they were in for a treat. Paula wore black slacks and top, and a brown suit jacket. She seemed in good spirits but emotionally distant, and hardly smiled. I didn't feel the urgency in her performance, although she did much of her harder-edged material. Possibly this was because she left out some of her more introspective, revealing songs, particularly "Happy Home" and "Bethlehem," especially odd since she was so close to home. I posted once that it would not be a complete Paula Cole concert without those two songs, never thinking it would ever come to pass. Now I'll have to reconsider that theory. Perhaps she really wants to move on from this perception of her persona, as she says in "Tiger," "I've left Bethlehem." Our nicer neighbors had brought their three-year-old daughter, who loves "This Fire" and, according to her mom, sings along and knows all the words, and calls Paula "the angry girl." (We suggested they try Ani DiFranco.) This was actually a hard-rocking set, the most rocked-out I've seen her. In a way, that really shows how diverse a songwriter she is. Throwing Stones Mississippi Me Cowboys Road To Dead Tiger Watch The Woman's Hands Hitler's Brothers encores: Jolene I Don't Want To Wait If that sounds short, it was. Scheduled for 60 minutes, she played 50. And she didn't play some of my favorites. Hey, nobody's perfect, nor should anyone be expected to be. That won't stop me from seeing her every chance I get. Besides, someday, I hope she'll do "Chiaroscuro." We didn't meet any other harbingers, but I did see the new T-shirt, just as Kenn described. Hilarious, but not for me. Sticking with my meditation one, which I was wearing, but I saw no others. There were a few oriental and black people, but I'd say the crowd was 99% white. Peace Steve (name under construction) PS: I hope she does "Oh John" at Lupo's - "Never lose the memory ofApril 26." Phil says the band doesn't know it, but she could do it solo . . . ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 19:48:05 PDT From: "Steve Bornstein" Subject: (harbinger) Welcome Welcome to the list Teddi.
