The Paradise Club show in Boston back in February of last year still holds the number one spot in my heart because it was so intimate and the hometown crowd was totally electrified by Paula, but the Beacon show is now comfortably in a very close second. If you saw the Divas on VH1, then you know what the venue looks like. Quite large and very good sound. Thanks to fellow listmate, Kim, I managed to upgrade my seats from 10th row right to 6th row dead center (Thanks again, Kim! Sorry I missed you at the show.), so I was definitely lovin' life last night. I won't mention much about Merrie Amsterberg. I don't know her music at all, so I can't really say if she was on top of her game or not. I'm guessing she wasn't. The worst thing was that I couldn't understand a word she sang because her sound was terribly muffled. Her set didn't do much to whip the crowd's energy up for seeing Paula, but a few of her songs sounded pretty good. The time between sets was mercifully short, especially since I've been chompin' at the bit to see PC perform live again. The show at Toad's Place just wasn't very enjoyable because of all of the crowd noise. Fortunately, last night's crowd seemed to be very much into Paula and wanted to see and hear her do her live thing. None of that rude chatter going on around our area in the audience. Naturally, the set was the same as the one Kim reported on at the Morristown, NJ show: (Regular set) Suwannee Jo, Happy Home, Throwing Stones, Mississippi, Feelin' Love, Me, Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?, Road To Dead, Bethlehem, Tiger, I Am So Ordinary, hush hush hush, Free, Hitler's Brothers (First encore) Carmen, I Don't Want To Wait, Jolene (Third encore) La Vie En Rose I'm so happy that Paula has chosen to include *Suwannee Jo* in her regular set. The live version is markedly different from and, in my opinion, even better than the version on the Blue In The Face soundtrack. It's the perfect song to start of the night. Smoldering and soulful - a hint of hotter things to come. The combination of the musical arrangement and lighting pulls the crowd in right off the bat, especially when she jumps back into some raging vocals at the end of the song following the subdued clarinet piece that deceives the crowd into thinking the song is ending. And that Cruella DeVille fur-collared dressing gown is wicked. I agree with Kim about the lighting on *Throwing Stones*. Very cool effect when the lights flash out at the crowd as Paula sings "Liar!" and "Motherfucker!" Reminds me of a similar effect that the band, Live, used during their song, Turn My Head, when I saw them on the Secret Samadhi tour last year. Hats off to to Phil with regard to the sound quality!!! I don't know if it's new and improved equipment or what, but, Phil, the sound is so much clearer and richer now than ever before. It really shows on *Mississippi*. Paula's shrieks on the chorus go right up your spine, but you can also hear every word of the bridge. Probably the best song of the whole night as far as execution goes. The extended funky version of *Feelin' Love* is just too damned cool. My favorite part of that song last night was a new twist I hadn't ever heard her do before - a tough little puppy growl/bark thing that Paula did at the end of a line early on in the song (I believe she did it at the end of "the girl next door..."). It was just like a continuation of the "r" sound in "door"... Rrr! Rrr! Damn... this girl means business when she's feelin' love!! ;^) Also, Paula's free-form vocalizations in conjunction with the Kevin's sexy guitar solo and the steady increase in tempo from soft and easy to full and soulful reminded me of the musical interpretation of coitus and climax in Prince's "Do Me, Baby." You know that one, Spanish? "I'm not gonna stop until the war is over..." ;^) Very happy to see *hush hush hush* back in the set. She had dropped it for a while. At first listen, *Free* didn't necessarily make me sit up and take notice. By that I only mean that when I heard Alanis Morissette's new song, "Uninvited," my feeling was like, "Wow!! That was Alanis? That's a really great song!" *Free* is definitely a good song, but it's also one that I'd have to hear more to say whether or not I loved it. A few of the lyrics escaped me last night and those I did pick up on are out of my head this morning, but from what I caught it's a love song. In it, Paula talks about being "out on these streets" and wanting to get away "from all these strangers." The general idea is that she just wants to go home and be in the comfort of this other person which is where she (and the other person) can truly be "free." Last night, Paula was very gracious when she said that she realized that there were a lot of us in the audience who have been following her for a long time now and that she and the band wanted to do something new for us. That was a very considerate and much appreciated gesture. As Kim mentioned, Paula invites everyone down to the front of the stage for her first encore. Take advantage of it if you want. In fact, you might want to hop down there just as she hits the stage for the encore. She's centerstage for *Carmen* and *Jolene*, so you can get up pretty close to her. And finally, *La Vie En Rose* put a big-ass smile on my face all over again. Seeing her at Toad's Place a couple of months ago was the first time I'd ever heard that song in her set. I fell in love with it then and last night sealed the deal. I don't know how you could help but smile when you see Paula come out on stage and knock that saucy number out of the park like she does. Her voice just soars on those long notes. That and just seeing her vamping around with so much joy and confidence in her blonde wig and feather boa is the perfect finale. So, that's the review. Definitely stick around to watch the home movies. They show Paula at several different points in her life: as a baby - in high school musicals - singing at her graduation commencement ceremony (couldn't tell if it was high school or college) - performing at what appeared to be the lounge act she did - with Peter Gabriel at the Secret World tour and more. Some of the shots are just so funny I couldn't help but laugh, especially at a few of the expressions on her face during the school musicals. Check out her face during the flapper routine! Talk about underwhelmed by it all.... :^) One other note... there's a new t-shirt available at the shows. This one is a dark beige shirt that reads "Paula Cole" on the shoulder area of the back of the shirt. The front of the shirt is a silkscreened white panel that shows seven or eight different women's dresses and robes and such (similar to the ones used on the stage backdrop fall). In the center of all the dresses is a man in an undershirt and boxers (he's also wearing men's stocking garters, black socks and dress shoes). The image is made to look like he's a paper doll and the dresses are his own personal finery (a la Herbert Hoover). Enjoy the shows!!! :^D Peace. The album is La Spada De San Galgano (The Sword Of Saint Galgano) and it was released back in 1991 (and apparently re-released in 1994 on the Accurate label) by a jazz ensemble called The Mandala Octet. The Paula only sings on the second track, which is called "Das Waldsterben." Here is the information from a webpage dedicated to The Mandala Octet: The Mandala Octet > Led by bassist John Leaman, this five-horn band brings the drama of > film music and a touch of funk into the realm of Mingus and modal jazz. > Leaman's compositions unfold melodramatically, full of surprising > juxtapositions, evocative atmospheres, hills and valleys. > > La Spada De San Galgano - Mandala's 1991 Accurate debut garnered > heaps of radio with its hauntingly beautiful title track, which drove one > music professor we know to his piano to figure out the chords. "Das > Walsterben," features eerie vocals by rising pop star Paula Cole. Here is the information from a blurb on Music Boulevard's site: > Ensemble led by bassist John Leaman from Boston. They play a > minimalist modern-jazz with lots of room for improvisation. Careful > listening of this group reveals hidden treasures. And here is the information from the paper sleeve of the CD itself: > Das Waldsterben translated from the German means the Forest Death. > It is a term used to describe the effects of acid rain on the forests of > northern Europe, especially those of Germany and Switzerland. I > wrote this piece of music out of concern for the environment. Das Waldsterben is first and foremost an instrumental piece of modern jazz. Paula's voice adds to it, but this one piece alone is just over 19 minutes long and you only hear her singing for a fraction of the total time. Paula first comes in at just about three minutes into the song where she sings a two-minute lyrical segment. They are full lyrics just like a regular song (not just improvisational stuff), but they don't last long. Then, right around 14 minutes in, Paula adds a couple of beautiful vocalizations and fades out again. And finally, only a minute before the end of the song, in she comes again singing more lyrics. When it comes down to it, I have less than zero appreciation for modern jazz, so I am going to refrain from making any observations on the music itself other than to say that it is most assuredly not something I would want to listen to very often. Modern jazz leaves my nerves jangling after about two minutes. Hell, I can barely stand going near Tower Records' jazz section when they have acid jazz blaring over the PA system. So, almost twenty minutes of "Das Waldsterben" was truly challenging for me. As such, I leave it to others who are mavens of this genre to comment on the musical qualities of the piece if they should decide to pick up this album. Perhaps, too, they can review the rest of the CD. I will comment on what I am familiar with and enjoy a great deal - Paula's vocals. They're really good. She definitely used her jazz background here. Her voice is smooth and jazzy just like in "Autumn Leaves," but more haunting. Once I have a chance, I'll give "Das Waldsterben" another listen and get the lyrics for you. Bottom line... would I recommend this CD? Yes and no. If you're a big fan of any kind of jazz, I'd say you'd probably like the disc. On the other hand, if your CD collection is comprised mainly of pop-alternative-folk stuff, then I'd suggest steering clear unless you want to try to broaden your musical horizons. Personally, although I like some of the classic jazz I've heard in the past, modern jazz and acid jazz leave me cold. If you do decide to buy the CD, you can order it online from Music Boulevard and Tower Records. It is probably available elsewhere as well, but I didn't check around too much once I found out my local Tower had one copy in stock. Finally, if you *do* decide to buy the album and you *are* a well-informed fan of jazz, please comment on the album. Maybe it'll help others to decide. Peace.
