Ok... so maybe it wasnt the surreal atmosphere of reggae sunsplash in montego bay, or the churchlike reverence tori amos gets at her shows.. but last night Paula was on top of her game big time!! I just love the way shes progressed as an artist, and the reworkings of some of the sogs off this fire is simply amazing... Kevin's guitar solo during feelin love had people yelling frampton comes alive over where i was standing (for those too young to remember... on that record, frampton does an extended solo during the song "do you feel like i do", and the way kevin was working the guitar put us in that frame of mind :) )... the band just seems to be having so much fun up there now... instead of the stoic interpretations on the record, theres just so much improvising going on now... and i swear... if paula puts out road to dead as a single, the video should be shot LIVE... she simply dominates the stage now, shes so very confident up there, and its just so wonderful seeing that happen right in front of your eyes. As of late, ive been seeing what i feel is the decline of the "angry/etheral" woman singer genre... and when i say that, i liken it to the way glam metal glutted the ariwaves during the cinderella/ warrant/motley crue days.... everyone who had big hair and a makeup case could get a record deal... it just seems to me that the industry is doing the same thing with female singers now... every time you turn around, some new girl with doe eyes and a guitar is out with a song that will be forgettable in a few months. i believe that when the dust settles and the good stuff is separated from the junk, paula will definately be one of the survivors. it seems shes already distancing herself from that introspective waif rock and embracing the notion of rocking the stage with the band. but the really unique thing about the whole concept is that shes so damn funky on stage... shes all over the place, getting in your face, making the experience more than just sitting at a piano, or holding a guitar in hand and making pretty little hand movements... when i was driving back to canton after the show, i just happened to have a nina simone cd in rotation, and i was getting the strangest vibe, that somehow paula was into that same groove that nina has been into for decades... if you dont have "the essential nina simone".. i suggest buying it.. yesterday!!!! it will take your breath away... its like both nina and paula have a visceral method to their madness, the words flow, and the spirit of the meaning washes over them... as for the crowd.. well it was a pittsburgh crowd, and i guess i really dont have to say much more than that... they are very rowdy, into their own thing for the most part, but when a song was played that they were familar with, it was like "oh yeah.. thats paula cole up there"... another reason for the some noisy crowd is the fact that Metropol is first and foremost a dance club... theres no better place to dance to Fatboy Slim or Armand Van Helden, but it just doesnt impress me a place to see paula.. she deserves to have a show down in the theatre district, or at least at the Pulumbo center... for the first time i saw paents bringing their kids to the show.. young kids.. like Real young...9 and 10 year olds... i just wonder what the parents thought when paula flipped the finger during cowboys, or started her "dont be sexually repressed "chat during feeling love... Her home movies thing at the end of the show was a riot... to see a young paula in her high school plays, and as a little girl with her birthday cake was very nice... shes just so giving to the audience, always thinking of us... If shes coming to a town near you.. well.. i dont have to tell ya what to do :) Spanish - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 09:52:39 EDT From: HunterXTC Subject: Re: (harbinger) Hey, Paula....What's Up With This? In a message dated 98-04-20 the sage Kenn wrote: << In Paula's Rolling Stone article, she is quoted as saying: > A more immediate goal involves her shows. "I really want more black > folks in my audience," Cole says. "They're the best audiences in the > world, anyway. What????? I mean, fine... she wants more blacks to attend her shows. Makes sense to me. But, that last bit sounds pretty offensive to all of the other folks (white, Asian, Hispanic, etc.) who've been cheering their hearts out for her all this time. Personally, I've never felt that being white precluded me from giving any better or lesser response as a member of the audience than someone of a race other than mine. I'm really hoping that she was misquoted. I'm having a hard time believing that something this inane actually could have come out of her mouth. >> I think that in this context, maybe the quote does seem a bit offensive, especially if youre not black... but i think the thing Paula was getting at was the fact that the music is universal, and that more folk should be there.. and whether we want to admit it or not, the country as a whole is still seen in terms of black and white... take my word for it... its pretty true, especially if youre trying to be with who you want to be with no matter what color they are. but thats kinda off the point of the comment... Sharley had this to say: "I feel that her statement of black folk being the best audiences in the world is completely supported and explained with her statement of black music being her favorite music. I did not take offense to her comment at all, it was in context with the idea she was expressing. Contained in the PC article in Entertainment Weekly back in February (remember it's the one with the controversial airbrushed photo), Paula speaks of black culture and her connection to it. I take this from the article: It's afternoon in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Cole has made a beeline for the African galleries. "I can't help it, I'm just drawn to black culture, black music, black art," says the singer-songwriter, a product of the paler-than-crabmeat town of Rockport, Mass. "I grew up in one of the whitest cultures you could pick, but that's not where my soul is. In my soul I feel I am more African than I am white Yankee." To me, what is stated above explains why Paula wants more black folk in her audience. Not as a knock-down to other ethnic groups, but because Paula enjoys the culture/music/art of blacks, she wants them to experience her art. It seems very simple to me. I just wanted to express an alternate viewpoint, and back it up with other quotes from Paula. She, of course, didn't mean for her words to upset us (her fans)! Remember how humble and unrepressed Paula lives her life, that's what I admire most about her...." Although i dont think that Paula's music is ever going to appeal to lots of black folks, i would love to see more people of color at ANY show i go to that in this genre. i think back to the days of Miles Davis in his prime, or Sly and the Family Stone, concerts where things were not segmented musically as they seem to be now (and i blame the industry for that, not the people), and i truly believe that Paula could be the type of artist that leads people of diverse cultures to experience more interaction... i think thats what the quote meant... i certainly dont believe it was a slam to anyone of any race. i just really think she wants to take her music to another level... like at the show last night, with the extended jazzy/ funky jams... i think shes reaching out... now if only more people will take her hand... This area has just exploded in the 90's (though radio is just now picking up on it) thanks to Sarah, Paula, and Shawn - who are, by the way, about all of the hundreds of talented artists who get airplay on mainstream radio. I'm glad you went to Jonatha, who is an inspiring performer and very nice person. The last time I saw her (September at Tramps NYC) there were a few black people, one of whom danced by herself the whole set and knew all the words. You are NOT alone! There were also a few blacks at Paula's show at Toad's Place. I also noticed that when I saw Ani last week in New Haven that there were a lot of blacks and men - 15 -20 % men - so I think people are realizing that music is for everybody. We are not so demographically segmented as market researchers like to think. Good taste in music has nothing to do with statistics but everything to do with an undefinable characteristic all humans have - one's soul. >> This is a grrreat post !!! You are so right when you talk of the soul being the driving force behind musical taste... and youre very right in the diversity of an Ani Difranco crowd... i LOVE her audiences... straight and gay, men and women, people of all colors... But i also think that we people on this list are probably a bit more open minded than the average American record buyer/concert goer... we are willing to be tolerant of more stuff, and perhaps we are not a great barometer of what really is going on out there... statistics can lie, but i think the reason that they are given validity is the fact that on the whole, people tend to believe them. and once that occurs, then you get the person who thinks... well im not the same color as the person on this parliment- funkadelic record.... ohhh i dont know if i should buy it.... or .. they dont play that on my record station that i listen to so it must suck. i know im weird in this sense.. i mean i grew up listening to porter wagoner, merle haggard and george jones, then got swept up in disco and punk and new wave and rap, because as you say... good taste has nothing to do with statistics :)... theres just so much wonderful music out there, and it seems a shame to think we cant listen to it all and find some merit in it, even if its just to acknowledge that hey... this person actually had a vision, a goal to share his music with the world... so i have to give them props for that... and once again, i dont think paula means to offend anyone... i just am so anxious to see what she and missy elliot cook up this summer at lillith... still wondering if i should just let the words flow, or do a spell check before letting them fly... spansih (hehehehe) - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 12:57:16 -0500 From: dj12doz@webtv.net (Daniel Gross) Subject: (harbinger) Paula H.O.R.D.E dates Paula will be appearing on H.O.R.D.E July 24 - Aug 12. ~The truth is just like time, it catches up and it just keeps going~Dar Williams - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 16:55:24 EDT From: DWspinTHIS Subject: Re: (harbinger) Hey, Paula....What's Up With This? i'm only replying to this because paula's not the only one that feels this way... i doubt if anyone saw this on new year's eve on ABC, the david sandbourne special, i only watched because i knew joan osborne was going to be on it, and as i watched... joan was not only the only female there, but she was also one of the few "white" artists, and she did a WONDERFUL job---and the thing that i thought was wonderful was that she sang a soulful duet with (someone...i have no idea who) who was black, and she truly pulled that off well. now, the reason joan sings with people like that is because that's the type of music she likes, and as i watched the performance again yesterday, the song sort of reminded me of paula's song (the first one she sang on sessions... is that jolene? i'm never clear on that)...and i could imagine paula singing this duet as well-----i doubt if paula meant her statement as something controvercial, i think she just meant that she'd like to get more variety ...and i'm waiting for the moment someone mentions the berkley choir...isn't this the same sort of thing? hol - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 19:45:50 -0400 (EDT) From: "Jill K.
