Yes, I quite agree, and I wonder, too. Not being black or a rap fan I can't imagine why/how it has lasted so long with so little musical diversity (as compared to the spectrum of possibilities), and I'm surprised that more blacks haven't turned to other artists and genres in a search for good music. There must be societal pressures, 'cause I don't hear it in the music. For myself, I used to be a big rock fan till I realized all I was hearing on the radio was either rap, heavy metal, or "classic" rock. That sent me first toward country (!) where at least people were writing *songs* not just *riffs*, and when I grew tired of that I started getting into folk/acoustic/singer-songwriter. This area has just exploded in the 90's (though radio is just now picking up on it) thanks to Sarah, Paula, and Shawn - who are, by the way, about all of the hundreds of talented artists who get airplay on mainstream radio. I'm glad you went to Jonatha, who is an inspiring performer and very nice person. The last time I saw her (September at Tramps NYC) there were a few black people, one of whom danced by herself the whole set and knew all the words. You are NOT alone! There were also a few blacks at Paula's show at Toad's Place. I also noticed that when I saw Ani last week in New Haven that there were a lot of blacks and men - 15 -20 % men - so I think people are realizing that music is for everybody. We are not so demographically segmented as market researchers like to think. Good taste in music has nothing to do with statistics but everything to do with an undefinable characteristic all humans have - one's soul. The easiest way to talk to them would be to email them or contact them through the web. I don't know what their email address is, but they shouldn't be hard to find on the web. I have a comment on all this. One needs to look at the statement in the Rolling Stone article that follows the one in question. Paula says, "They're the best audiences in the world, anyway (referring to black folk). And it's my favorite music, whether it's jazz, hip-hop, rap. I have alot to learn from the hip-hop world." I feel that her statement of black folk being the best audiences in the world is completely supported and explained with her statement of black music being her favorite music. I did not take offense to her comment at all, it was in context with the idea she was expressing. Contained in the PC article in Entertainment Weekly back in February (remember it's the one with the controversial airbrushed photo), Paula speaks of black culture and her connection to it. I take this from the article: It's afternoon in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Cole has made a beeline for the African galleries. "I can't help it, I'm just drawn to black culture, black music, black art," says the singer-songwriter, a product of the paler-than-crabmeat town of Rockport, Mass. "I grew up in one of the whitest cultures you could pick, but that's not where my soul is. In my soul I feel I am more African than I am white Yankee." To me, what is stated above explains why Paula wants more black folk in her audience. Not as a knock-down to other ethnic groups, but because Paula enjoys the culture/music/art of blacks, she wants them to experience her art. It seems very simple to me. I just wanted to express an alternate viewpoint, and back it up with other quotes from Paula. She, of course, didn't mean for her words to upset us (her fans)! Remember how humble and unrepressed Paula lives her life, that's what I admire most about her. That's all, take care everyone! ~Sharley - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 19:57:51 EDT From: Riphug Subject: (harbinger) National Women's Music Festival I got the coolest thing in the mail this afternoon...... Smashing Pumpkins, Paula Cole, Marcy Playground, and Fastball have been added to a H.O.R.D.E. festival line-up that already includes Blues Traveler, Ben Harper, Alana Davis and others. With Lollapalooza out of commission this summer, H.O.R.D.E. founder John Popper had more room to maneuver in signing on bands for this summer's outing. The Blues Traveler frontman seems to have followed the trend that he began last summer when his festival moved away from the earthy love-in it had been to more of a straight ahead alternative showcase with acts like Beck, Soul Coughing, Ben Folds Five and others on board. This year's tour gets underway on July 9 at River's Edge in Somerset, Wisconsin and wraps up on September 5 in Portland, Oregon. Blues Traveler will be joined for at least five July dates by Smashing Pumpkins, and later in the tour by Paula Cole for a three week stretch. Fastball will hop on the tour sometime in August. H.O.R.D.E.'s main stage will also feature singer/songwriter Ben Harper, Canadian favorites Barenaked Ladies, and jazz-influenced vocalist Alana Davis. The tour's second stage will feature turns by Marcy Playground, Robert Bradley's Backwater Surprise, and Chris Stills, son of 60s songwriter Stephen Stills. David Garza, Fiji Mariners, Emmet Swimming, Agents Of Good Roots, and Getaway People will also be among the acts playing the tour's second stage. Tickets go on sale Friday for a show in Bonner Springs, Kansas, and on Saturday tickets will be available for shows in Oklahoma City; Noblesville, Indiana; Clarkston, Michigan; Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Cincinnati, Ohio; Columbus, Ohio; Burgettstown, Pennsylvania; Canadaigua, New York; and Boston.
