Hey Jill Let me know how you like the Sara Hickman. I think she is an exceptionally talented and versatile songwriter and singer. She is adept in a great variety of styles. This is shown better on her previous "Misfits," which also included more of her humorous side. In my annual "Best Of" list I went out on a limb and said it was "the most fun and my personal favorite." Still, she's one of the best around, and this continues her string of fine albums. But enough of me; I'd like to hear what you think. (BTW, MIXX Magazine can be seen on the net at www.intermixx.com; go to Issue #72 for my Best Of 1997 List. Or post me and I'll mail you a copy.) I don't know about Natalie - her music seems a little "young" for me, but I'm still listening - I'm a little more impressed with Chantal. Still trying to find Emm Gryner and Holly McNarland. . . I missed Jane Siberry when she came around last month. It would have been an 80-mile drive on a weeknight, but I would have gone if I'd only remembered! Jane doing a kid's album - great idea! I wish they could have gotten Paula to sing "Frere Jacques" - of course, she's more than just . . . oh, you know. I've been wondering - How was your party? Did you post a wrap-up that I missed? Hope to make the next one. Lilith Talent Search Hey everybody! Found this while surfing. Somebody PLEASE post this to the fumbling list, the ecto list, wherever it will do the most good. There's not a whole lot of time to enter. Lilith Fair launches talent search By KAREN BLISS -- Jam!Music More than two-and-a-half months before Sarah McLachlan's female-fronted music festival kicks off June19 in Portland, Lilith Fair fever is already high. While a press conference is scheduled April 16 in Los Angeles to announce the 30-plus North American concert dates, the Lilith Fair camp has just unveiled plans to present local talent searches in 14 of the markets in which the festival will be playing, with the winner getting a slot on the side stage. (This year's mainstage lineup includes McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Sinead O'Connor, Paula Cole, Shawn Colvin, Erykah Badu, Missy Elliot, Sheryl Crow, and The Indigo Girls). "Sarah and the partners at Lilith Fair wanted to have some sort local talent on every Lilith date and came up with the idea of a talent search," says Pierre Tremblay, VP of Nettwerk Management in Vancouver. "In every single market, be it Indianapolis or Toronto or Raleigh, North Carolina, we want somebody who is actually from that city performing on Lilith Fair." In keeping with the spirit of Lilith Fair, only female-fronted acts are eligible to apply, but they must be acoustic with no more than three members. "We've got so many artists on the side stage and technically it was the only way it could work," explains Tremblay. "But you can still have somebody like a Kinnie Starr, who has a bit of an edge but can do it in a way that works within our production needs." The judging for each event will be organized locally by the respective promoter, but Lilith Fair submitted "rules" to each promoter, outlining how they want the judging handled.  "We want a representative form the promoter, a representative from a radio station, a local press person and somebody in the music industry in that market, be it an artist or whatever, so it's not all one-sided," says Tremblay. The only Canadian talent search announced so far is in Toronto. Two winners will be chosen to perform at one of two Lilith Fair '98 performances at The Molson Amphitheatre in mid-August. To qualify, a two-song demo must be submitted by mail or in person to: Levi's/Lilith fair Acoustic Talent Search c/o Universal Concerts Canada @ Molson Amphitheatre 909 Lakeshore Blvd. W., 3rd. Floor Toronto, Ontario M6K 3L3. Deadline is April 10 at 6 p.m. (ET) The tapes will then be judged by "the talent department of Universal Concerts", according to Denise Dorchak, assistant talent buyer at Universal Concerts Canada inToronto. Finalists will be contacted by phone on April17th. (A list of names will also be posted on the Universal website: www.universalconcerts.ca) "Out of all of those applicants, 20 participants will be chosen to perform one song on April 21st at the Opera House for a panel of judges consisting of -- and this still hasn't been confirmed," says Dorchak -- "but probably somebody from (radio station) The Edge, somebody from (weekly magazine) Now, maybe somebody from MuchMusic and maybe somebody from our office."  Admission for the April 21 talent-search concert is free. The show kicks off at 8 p.m. While all the Canadian dates will take place in August, they won't be happening back-to-back. According to Tremblay, the festival will travel to Toronto, return to America, then come back and do Western Canada. I'm sure many on this list know people who would want to do this. What a fantastic opportunity! Well... i guess i will give my two cents on the "who should open for Paula" thread... everyone had lots of great ideas, and i don't think that any of those show openers would be a bad idea. I guess that of all the comments i heard.. i think that John Gorka would also be the best choice... of all the singer/songwriters out there today, i dont believe there is anyone who lays his diary out on a cd with such heartfelt emotion as this guy... perhaps that would not play well in many cities, but if any of you have ever seen him live... its like you're sitting in your living room, and you have this sage of a person in your world for an all too brief time... and he relates stories of poverty, of joy, of hope... and then hes gone... and you wonder why this guy gets no recognition... and then you say... in a sense, he probably likes it that way. NOW>>>> if.... it were a perfect world, a world where i could see someone who i know would make a great duet with paula, not only as an opening act, but as a duo on several songs (think.. much better renderings of the stuff paula did with jules shear and david byrne)... i'd definately go with David Sylvian. Secrets of the Beehive is such a mystical record, going way beneath the superfical stuff that seems to pervade so much of music today... and this guy was just so far ahead of his time with Japan... and i have no idea what he's doing now (the last memory i have is the collaboration with Robert Fripp)... but i just wish someone like that would come back and that Paula could write some stuff with him... it would be alllll good..... I couldnt really think of anything good to say to Paula for her 30th b-day... but in the words of Oingo Boingo.. its just another day.... or in the words of Tennessee Ernie Ford.. you're another day older and deeper in debt (well maybe THAT doesn't apply unless Paula does a gig in West Virginia, and she and Phil end up loading 16 tons of #9 coal)... and i doubt if it will be the end of the world as she knows it (but she will be fine)... so i guess i will just wait until the 20th and wish her a happy belated one... now that i got Tammy to go and TAPE Ally McBeal instead (why do so many professional women identify with that Ally.. i dont get it...)... Pittsburgh here we come!!! Still wondering if Vanilla Ice can fill in for Rob in the Milli Vanilli reunion... Cover tunes??? Definately... during a rainstorm at a Lillith near you.... Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).. that Melanie song... I just think Paula's voice could nail that song so well... and it has such powerful words and images... and... The Book of Rules, an old reggae song by the Heptones... but she has to have the original I-Threes do backing vocals, and Sly and Robbie have to be the drum and bass section... this is probably one of my favorite songs of all times, because i always carry the lyric: Common people like you and me/ Will be builders for eternity/ Each is given a bag of tools/ Shapeless mass/ And the Book of Rules... great song for a nite time drive by the way... ...Still wondering why Monte Clift didn't get F. I buy my online cds from www.musicblvd.com. Their prices are usually lower than cdnow's, and they offer shipping and handling deals. (Right now, no shipping or handling charges on orders of three cds or more.) On the other hand, if you buy a lot of cds, you can save a ton of money by joining at www.everycd.com. Every cd charges $40 a year for membership, but then you buy your cds at wholesale or near-wholesale prices. For example, most full-priced cds at everycd are in the $11-$11.97 price range. At musicblvd and cdnow, some new releases and sale items sell in that range, with $14-$15 being the normal price. Comparing net prices to Borders prices, instant gratification cost around $80-$100 extra. ;) CD prices are really getting insane. Tower has unilaterally raised all cd prices in the store (there was no price increase by the labels or distributors, Tower just went and upped everything), Borders started off out-of-sight, and Best Buy has cut down on prices. Indie stores are bizarre--in some towns they offer either the highest prices or the lowest prices, without much in between. The Tower prices really knocked me through the roof--and the prices for reissues have gotten incredible. I don't actually buy that much rock/pop/adult alternative stuff, mostly I buy classical and jazz. Tower's stock includes European independant classical labels for $18.99, Verve jazz reissues at $15.99-$16.99 (and jazz reissues are the absolute worst--full price for a 30-40 minute long recording made 30 years ago with cut-rate recording charges, and meanwhile we're supposed to buy the new full-priced reissue b/c the orginal cd reissues were such botched jobs.) Sony has just released a Miles Davis box of recordings from mid-60's--six cds for around $115. The one online store I would avoid like the plague is absound's. I know nothing about the stores themselves, but the cd site is run by crack-addicted protosimians, and ordering a cd from there is means getting your order shipped to you in time for your retirement. Even at Canadian monopoly-money exchange rates it isn't worth the tsuris. Better to phone in orders. Thank you very much for your response. I am actually looking at Music Boulevard right now because they seem to have a larger selection and I am quite pleased with their prices. Thank you again!
