"i know" came out in 90 and boasts shawn colvin, lucy kaplanski, and christine lavin, on backing vocals, and frank christian on guitar, megan mcdonough on whistling. these people and john have been at the heart and start of the emerging singer/songwriter movement. John is every where in this movement, playing with everyone, enlisting and promoting everyone in this genre. he is the man, who is a man, and calls women his equals, friends and persons to love. right now he is grabbing my heart strings with a song about an old cranky man, in a song called "the sentinal", after having made me laugh with the previous song about having his car stolen "stranger in my drivers seat" these are on "land of the bottom line. John is supremely adept at deep emotions and making me laugh, and opening my eyes. as a kid of the early sixties, i grew up with the dichotomy of the old R&R vs the new R&R. the old being elvis etc. the new being the beatles etc. so i always had an aversion to and derisive attitude toward elvis, which he himself corroborated with his foolish appearance at the end of his carear. well then comes John with his song "thats why" which is on his album "out of the valley". this song changed my stubborn mind and gave me an appreciative, fond view of elvis. i no longer saw the foolish vegas elvis, the old guard antitheses of the beatles elvis, the f**kin white boy making money on black music (instead of those who deserved it) elvis. with this one song John showed me the historic beauty, and importance of elvis, and the striving of elvis soul along with the weight of who he was and how it crushed him. if your still reading, i will stop praising the many more John songs and albums i could, but i want to mention how cool and charming a performer he is. he had me laughing throughout his entire show, laughing and crying(almost). he is so real and has this great dead pan, self depreciating sense of humor. if you have ever heard his very funny "i'm from new jersey" song you will have an idea of his humor, well that runs through his whole persona. so there's my vote, and a note to helsinki steve,as some one else he should check out , in pursuit of new and interesting music. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:10:03 EST From: Honoku Subject: (harbinger) leno wont be near my computer for a couple of weeks, so it's ok to mention so early, Paula Cole , on Leno 4/15 - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:14:18 EST From: Honoku Subject: (harbinger) mtv in rock on tv's site i saw mentioned a new show called "artist's cut". it premiers 4/6 and the first show does not include Paula, but she is mentioned as a future subject. the show is artists giving insight into thier music and videos, sounds very kewl to me. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 10:29:44 EST From: SCSwhoopin Subject: Re: (harbinger) paula poster (promos) I have the poster you were talking about and another one where she is sitting in a chair with a white rose (identical to the ones she gave away at her last concert in Chicago) on her lap. Howdy all, Although I did not attend Paula's recent show in Portland, OR, I hear that she only performed for an hour and did only one encore. I believe this is because even though she was the headliner for the Z100 "Birthday Bash," she shared the stage with a bunch of R&B acts, some sort of strange "Spice Boys" thing and the Rapping Grandma from The Wedding Singer. Because this wasn't a show that just featured Paula and an opening act, I don't believe it is really indicative of Paula's set for the remainder of her tour.... someone who attends one of her other shows would be give a much better idea of any changes in the setlist. It's a fairly good soundtrack despite the lukewarm reviews it has been getting from the music press. U2's "If God Will Send His Angels" and Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited" (both new songs) are totally pleasant surprises. I don't much care for Bono and the Boys or Alanis, but I really like both of these songs very much. Alanis hardly sounds like herself - none of that caterwauling so omnipresent on her JLP. Paula's "Feelin' Love" fits in with the mood of the soundtrack perfectly (more comments on this at the end of this....) John Lee Hooker's "Mama, You Got A Daughter" is awesome and reminds me of a New Orleans jook joint. Sarah's "Angel" is still beautiful and quite appropriate for the disc. Goo Goo Dolls' song is OK; not great. Peter Gabriel's "I Grieve" is a disappointing snooze. Especially when I've been listening to his stellar Secret World Live all day. Jude's "I Know" is a beautiful song. Sounds like what would happen if Carole King covered a Michael Penn song. Haunting. Like this one a lot. Eric Clapton's "Further On Up The Road" is nothing remarkable. Typical honky-tonk guitar-driven movie song. Typical Clapton pop. Gabriel Yared's contributions to the soundtrack are pretty instrumentals, but they're not particularly interesting. I'm sure they play well in the film, though. Sounds like heaven music to me. ;^) Despite a few downfalls, it's a good soundtrack overall. I'd recommend it. Now, I know that I'm not going crazy. When the ads for this movie first hit the airwaves and the theatres, they weren't playing Alanis' new song as the background music (like they are now) - they were playing Paula's "I Don't Want To Wait." I know they were. I remember mentioning to my best friend that I was surprised that they were using IDWTW when it was already being used on Dawson's Creek. Anyway, IDWTW obviously didn't make the soundtrack. Feelin' Love did. There must have been a last minute decision to make the switch. Now, what I'm wondering is this.... Is the next release from This Fire going to be "Feelin' Love"? It'd be easy to make this into one of those "from the motion picture" videos. You know... intersplicing shots of PC singing and whatnot with scenes from the movie (a la Ms. Dion and her Titanic love theme). Cheap vid to make, too. If this turns out to be the case, I won't be surprised. I've kinda been figuring all along that "Feelin' Love" would be the next release after "Me." The timing sure is great. "Feelin' Love" would be perfect as one of those hot, steamy summertime hump-n-bump songs. Y'know? ;^) Guess we'll know soon enough. If they plan to release it as a single and video, it'll be on the air within the next month or so. They'll have to. I doubt the movie will last much longer than that. Peace. Happened to see in USA Today Thursday 3/26 the following article. Haven't posted it because I type so slowly and I'd hoped someone speedier would do so. MTV STOPS PLAYING GAMES AND TURNS UP THE MUSIC MTV is putting the Singled Out and Beavis and Butt-Head era behind it with a new emphasis on music-themed programming. [Editorial note: About time, too. After all, it was supposed to be MUSIC TV, wasn't it? Not puerile humor TV?] The 24-hour music video channel will package two new music shows with two reinvented ones in a two-hour block of prime time launching April 6. New programming head Brian Graden, who was 17 when MTV made its debut in 1981, hopes to re-whet the network's edge, which has been badly blunted by goofy game shows and the aging Real World series. The two new shows are among 20 original MTV pilots in the works. Straying into nonmusic programming cost MTV ratings and created an identity crisis, which the channel is working to fix. "The soul of MTV remains the music video," Graden says. "It is the art form that we certainly introduced to the world [Ed: Typical MTV "modesty"], and these shows celebrate that art form." The channel's new prime-time programming will run Monday through Friday from 8 to 10 PM ET/PT. Nonmusic programs such as the animated Daria and advice show Loveline will still air but have been relegated to 10 PM to midnight. The new lineup: > Artists Cut, a video-based half-hour in which artists offer behind-the-scenes commentary and personal perspectives on the making of their latest videos. Segments for the premiere episode feature Wyclef Jean, Sugar Ray, Paula Cole, and Bjork, who gives the scoop on a tire store tap-dancing sequence in her video It's Oh So Quiet. >Say What?, a 30-minute music video program tailored to fans with a jones for lyrics. Song lyrics, sometimes unintelligible to listeners, scroll across the screen as the videos air. The videos will be intercut with person-on-the-street interviews. > Rockumentary Re-Mix, a re-tooled version of an existing MTV documentary series profiling popular artists. > Top 10 Video Requests, a countdown of the most requested videos of the day, interspersed with messages from viewers. Graden says his imperative is to put the "M" back into MTV. "The idea is just to do more themed music programming." To the right of this article is a picture of Paula doing her beat-box, probably from The Grammy's. Guess the editor knows whose picture will attract attention. So perhaps Paula IS included in the first show. As so often happens, you have to tune in to find out. Peace Steve PS: Honoku - I appreciate your assessment of the Steve situation. It's a minor but confusing problem. Sorry, but my name IS Steve. I was about the only Steve I knew until college, when suddenly half the guys were named Dave, Mike, or Steve - definitely too many Steves. I've survived so far, but perhaps it is time to invent a new name for my cyber-self. My address is still going to give it away, and I'm reluctant to change that. As a published writer many more people know me than vice versa, so I feel it's important to maintain that recognition factor. Perhaps I'll just number myself - Steve 13 or something. I'm open to suggestions but it's pretty off-topic. Enough (and then some) for now. Peace Steve 13 ? >From owner-harbinger@smoe.org Fri Apr 3 12:09:56 1998 >Received: from smoe.org [204.167.97.154] (root) > by siren.shore.net with esmtp (Exim) > id 0yL7OT-0003VZ-00; Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:24:33 -0500 >Received: from localhost (daemon@localhost) > by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) with SMTP id JAA27018; > Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:23:09 -0500 (EST) >Received: by smoe.org (bulk_mailer v1.5); Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:23:05 - -0500 >Received: (from majordom@localhost) > by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/listq-jane) id JAA26931 > for harbinger-outgoing; Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:17:44 -0500 (EST) >Received: from imo11.mx.aol.com (imo11.mx.aol.com [198.81.17.33]) > by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-relay2) with ESMTP id JAA26927 > for ; Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:17:37 -0500 (EST) >Received: from Honoku@aol.com > by imo11.mx.aol.com (IMOv13.ems) id FDYCa01114 > for ; Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:14:18 -0500 (EST) >From: Honoku >Message-ID: >Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 09:14:18 EST >To: harbinger@smoe.org >Mime-Version: 1.0 >Subject: (harbinger) mtv >Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII >Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit >X-Mailer: AOL 3.0 for Mac sub 84 >Sender: owner-harbinger@smoe.org >Reply-To: harbinger@smoe.org >Precedence: bulk > >in rock on tv's site i saw mentioned a new show called "artist's cut". it >premiers 4/6 and the first show does not include Paula, but she is mentioned >as a future subject. the show is artists giving insight into thier music and >videos, sounds very kewl to me. > >------------------------------ >To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: >unsubscribe harbinger > >Please note the new majordomo address > >To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: >http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html > >Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: >http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html >For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com > > ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V3 #107 *******************************
