[Rebecca Lay ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 08:10:57 EST From: Riphug Subject: (harbinger) "City of Angels" soundtrack review in EW If anyone can find the specific track listing for this soundtrack, I'd love to see it! <<'City' Limits Despite the flighty verse of Alanis and the pained poetics of Gabriel, "Angels" doesn't take wing Befitting her first new recording in three years, Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited" starts auspiciously, with simple, chilly piano notes and Morrissette's recognizable wracked soprano. It's the musical equivalent of a castle door creaking open. The creepy mood suits the lyric, a scornful kiss- off of what could be either a possessive lover or her own overwhelming celebrity status. (Or whatever it is she means by lines like "Must be somehwat hard telling to watch them burn me shepherd.") Taking a cue from the orchestrated version of 'You Oughta Know" Morissette performed at the 1996 Grammys, the song then whips itself into a symphonic maelstrom. This is clearly her arty adult move, and she and coproducer Rob Cavallo (of Green Day fame) almost pull it off -- except someone had the idea of ending the track with a hackneyed, squealing guitar solo of the sort that not even Styx use anymore. Sure, Morissette's lived, but what has she learned? What's also auspicious about "Uninvited" is that it's not on a new Morissette album (that disc doesn't even exist yet) but on the soundtrack of the Meg Ryan - - Nicolas Cage film "City of Angels." Like many of its movie-connected brethren, this one lurches awkwardly from one genre to another. Rotts music is trotted out courtesy of blues oldies from Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker; songs from the latest Paula Cole and Sarah McLachlan albums make for a Lilith Fair share. If you're in the mood for a windswept score, "English Patient" composer Gabriel Yared offers up a chunk at disc's end. Peter Gabriel makes a comeback of his own with *his* first new rock recording since the days when George Bush was President. Alas, "I Grieve" is a murmur so pained that it practically curls into a fetal position before our very ears. Someone call Phil Collins -- and quick! I guess I was expecting pop melody music and it was too harsh for what >I wanted. Her name is Jennifer Trynin. You're right--her music is not pop melody, and does have a bit of an edge to it, especially her lyrics. But that's precisely why I like her lyrics. Yet I wouldn't want someone I was actually in a relationship with to tell me "kill the lights and I will try to keep my mind on you and my body in this bed . . ."; or "why can't you get it through your head that I would rather leave it left unsaid (ie I love you)"; or my favorite, "I'd like to say it was great while it lasted, but I won't lie . . ." So if you like a fun, rockin sound from, as Kenn put, "a kickass rockin chick," then you'll enjoy her stuff. If not, I guess you won't like it. It involves a body part that usually we are *far too delicate* to mention. No, it's not a bobbit. Those seem to be a dime a dozen in pring these days. We're talking about femal underarm fur. In these sophisticated days when we speak openly of couplings that sound cooked up by overly optimistic engineering students (*they did it how?*) it seems one thing purveyors of mass entertainment don't seem comfy with is the unshaved female armpit. We first noticed this when Paula Cole sang on Rosie O'Donnell's show. Paula, who goes au naturel in that area, flung up an arm in dramatic gesture, exposing her puff for all to see. From that moment on, TV cameras seemed frantic to choose any angle that stayed safely away from the underside of Paula's shoulder. Well, Paula's pit has reared its tendrils again. When Entertainment Weekly profiled her last month, her photo was retouched. Paula wrote a letter printed in its March 27th issue: "Why in hell did you airbrush out my armpit hair? Cowardly move." EW responded in an editor's note: "Oops! We thought it was just a smudge..." OK guys. Nice try, but we find it hard to believe you'd bother to paint out a smudge. Unless, of course, you didn't want people to think it was--quelle horreur--armpit hair." The picture below is of Paula holding her hand to her forehead (maybe from the grammys?) exposing her armpit hair, with an arrow pointing to it saying "whatever you do, DON'T LOOK HERE!" I'm sure this is totally illegal, but I though you all might find it amusing. In the next couple of days a message is going to appear on the list from a dude named Mike Connell. The message is going to be a request for donations for smoe.org. For those not aware of smoe, it is the system that hosts this list. Unlike most isps, which charge for list service, smoe.org has provided free list service for this list and dozens of others. This has allowed for the existance of a lot of lists that wouldn't have existed otherwise, including harbinger. The problem is that smoe's server is pretty hurting and needs to be replaced. On most systems, no problem--they just pay for a new server out of user charges. For smoe, there are no charges, so a new server must be paid for from donations. Mike is a fellow listowner here and has volunteered to lead the donations drive. When his post appears I want y'all to know its not a spam, it is a legit message and and he has permission to post here. Please, if anyone feels the slightest urge to flame the guy just unsub now. ;) So please, if you value receiving the list cough up some cash when Mike writes in. If a lot of people participate, it won't have to be that much per person. If no one participates and existing server fries--we're screwed. So lend a hand. I also emailed Phil to see if Warners/Paula could kick in anything...
