The more I think about it, the more I like Martin Sexton as an opener. He is perhaps the best male singer around these days, and the possibility of a duet is just delicious. Besides - and not that it matters at all - he is much better-looking than The Devlins. Along the lines of world beat and/or rhythmic folk: *Erin Corday - from Seattle area, solo singer/songwriter (but often performs with a percussionist) with a versatile, compelling voice, who integrates Brazilian rhythms and textures into her guitar and writing styles. She also had an even tougher childhood than Paula's and turned out just fine (3 albums out); *Laura Love - also from Seattle, she mixes African, Celtic, and folk into a unique, totally danceable style without diminishing her verbal impact (at least 4 albums); *Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman - from upstate NY, she writes, sings, and plays conga, he plays tasteful guitar, bass, and sings some - they get into some amazingly funky grooves with just their deceptively simple instrumentation. She gets some astounding effects with her voice, including two notes at once, and I saw her do a duet with Martin Sexton in which HE "did" Billie Holliday and SHE 'did" Louis Armstrong! (2 albums) Also - Patty Larkin would be fine - excellent, in fact - but Ani is too much her own self to work well in this context. BTW, Ani will be on Letterman Friday 3/27. Cowboys - some think it's overplayed - her performance on Letterman, playing tambourine while pogo-ing in a man's grey suit with deadpan expression, was a great moment in rock 'n' roll history - absurd but groovin' Feelin' Love - about as hot as it gets I Don't Want To Wait - very catchy and true Me - many insightful observations concerning what does and doesn't make a person who she/he is, wrapped up in an unforgettable melody (BTW - I didn't care for Road To Dead until I heard her electrifying live version, with killer finger cymbals - wish she'd used them on the album) From Harbinger - I'm right between jeansapula and Dusti, Goddess of Denial here - sounds like a nice place to be . . ahem, I mean - Happy Home - how to start an album and make your presence known to the world I Am So Ordinary - she sure isn't - I heard this was written for a friend, which makes sense Bethlehem - about as well-told a tale of growing up an outsider as I've heard Chiaroscuro - rhythm, melody, lyrics, arrangement, groove - it's all here. I still hope to hear this live someday . . . PS: I often judge albums by the First Five Songs Rule - if I like them I figure the album is a keeper. (Arbitrary but useful, and easily ignored if so compelled.) The first SIX songs here make it for me. But as I listened, I felt so bad about the whole armpit hair thing. Paula Cole is one of *the* most musically talented artists I've ever heard and it just makes me angry that some narrow-minded people can't accept her as she is. Sure, maybe she's *different* because she chooses not to shave her underarm hair, but who cares? What does that have to do with her music? I hate seeing her wonderful musical performing talents being overshadowed by such a stupid and shallow thing....... Paula Cole? Who? Oh, you know.......that one with the armpit hair. YEAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! I have been a such a great fan of Heather's for so many years now and a new album from her comes right on time for me. Like the rest of Heather's die-hard fans, I've been seriously wanting for new music from her. (By the way, somebody asked the other day who did the closing song on Significant Others - it was Heather's "Walking Higher.") I can only hope that her tour is going to include the U.S. Also, I would really lose my composure if her part of Lilith Fair included any city on the East Coast. Guess we'll have to wait and see. Wherever she is, I'm going - even if it uses up all my frequent flyer miles. Go, Heather!!! :^D Peace.
