[Jimmy Mac Subject: (harbinger) some fallout on the ani list... Hi everyone.... Oh it's hell having to work for a public utility... rightsizing galore, no additional people to help.. but all the overtime anyone could possibly want... kinda makes ya wonder... I found this little snippet on the Ani Difranco list... thought someone might be able to shed some light on who the mysterious "Van" is.... This Ani fan writes this about Paula.... The reason she leaves a bad taste in my mouth is because about 7 years ago my ex-roommate and close friend Van picked up stakes from Santa Cruz and moved his life to Boston because she convinced him that it would be in his best interest, he had to stick with the band (he'd been playing with her for awhile when he could -- he's a bassist) and it was only a matter of time before they got signed as a band, blah-fucking-blah. He moved in with me & another friend and basically spent a year of his life playing with her (as well as with Dale Bozzio's band on the side, but that was more for fun.) One day Paula goes to NYC, has a bunch of meetings, doesn't call the guys in her band for awhile, they all are imagining the worst, she comes back, and their fears are realized. The company peeps convinced her to drop the guys cold and sign with them solo. I believe she spoke to Van once and that was the last he heard from her. Understandably, he loathes her. Living with him was kind of a bummer after that. The guy uprooted his whole life & moved across the country to come & play with her, as she asked. He eventually left Boston soon after, not a happy boy was he. Evidently, I recently found out that Sheryl Crow did the same thing to her original band. Knew there was a reason I didn't like her, either. But that's besides the point I suppose. So hey, people make their own choices & I guess Van did, too. But it sucks to have faith in someone and have them spit in your face once they find something better for themselves. And for the record, Van is probably one of the most amazing bass players in the world. A total artist, Jaco Pastorius style. So that's why *I* don't care for Paula Cole. That, and I personally don't like her music, it's not to my taste at all. Peace, TT :) Obviously... this person had a bit of *anger* in her post... but i suppose in a sense, it is justified... that must be hard when the front person is obviously so talented that they outshine the rest of the original band... but hey... there was always Dale Bozzio <> As for other Paula news/ stuff.... is anyone going to the April 20th show at Rosebud in Pittsburgh??? And are the tickets that i bought many moons ago still valid after the 2 postponements??? Still wondering what's up with my girlfriend, who'd rather watch Ally McBeal than drive 3 hours to see Paula in Pittsburgh..... Just a quick note to answer some of the deluge of random topics currently being mumbled about on the list and updates on stuff that has been started and not finished..... My picks for opening acts for Paula: Jeb Loy Nichols or Laura Love My website: As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I had hoped to have the site up by April 5th, in honor of PC's 30th birthday. That's not going to happen. It'll be a bit longer, I'm afraid. However, the site is going to be called "Eden." All of the recent anti-Paula sentiments on radio, TV and the Ani DiFranco mailing list: Who cares? Let people say what they're going to say. As far as talking about it ad nauseum, I don't see that it does nothing but aggravate Paula fans further and solves nothing. If you like Paula, let that be what matters. If other people don't like her, fuck 'em. Grow thicker skins, folks. Why Paula doesn't sing "Saturn Girl"? ..... No idea. It's a great song. Guess she would just rather be singing other stuff. Whoever wrote asking about the Paula Cole discography (i.e., what's available out there besides what you have in your collection).... e-mail me privately (not to the entire list, please) and I'll send you my discography. It contains almost everything that's available. A lot of it is the hard-to-find stuff, promos, singles, guest appearances, soundtrack appearances, etc. I have a WordPerfect 7 tables version and an all-text ASCII version. Let me know which one you want when you write. To those of you who requested it before... I'll be updating it this week with more groovy things added on and will be sending it out to you then. I've been busy! :^) The Bob Masse poster of Paula - It's not going to happen. Fifteen people responded. Hang it up. If you've been on the list for all of about a week and don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry about it and don't ask questions. ;^) The video for "I Am So Ordinary" - I finally got to see this video yesterday. I managed to track down a video compilation on which it appears. Pretty cool little video that must have cost next to nothing to make. If you haven't seen it, it's pretty easy to visualize. Black and white video featuring Paula Cole with short hair (a la the Harbinger cover, for those who didn't know she ever had short hair - hee hee) and a larger nose stud than she's sporting these days. She's singing and in between shots of her are shots of ordinary people (picture the extras from the "I Saw You First" video by Mellencamp). That's the video for "Ordinary." And, yes... when I get my website up, I will put up images from the vid. I'm working on getting the video card for my computer. That's about it for now, folks. Peace. Critics and advertisers hear the Alanis anthem on advance tapes of the show's pilot last year. That's why industry insiders were suprised to hear the new theme song--Paula Cole's 'I Don't Want to Wait"-- when Dawson's Creek premiered in January. What prompted the switch? Alanis didn't want her song to become a TV tune, say her reps. Paula, though, was psyched to get with the program. 'At first I was reluctant,' she says, 'but when I saw [the show], I believed in it.' Kevin Williamson, DC's creator thinks Paula's tune is perfect because the show is about 'the constantly changing feelings of teenagers, and you can feel the full range of emotions in her music.'" Sounds to me like some of Alanis's fans got word of this and decided to bash Paula for her gig. But like Kenn says "Fuck 'em". Just thought you all would like to know. And on the subject of a possible opener for Paula, since I haven't heard her mentioned yet: Danielle Howle! She's a great singer-songwriter, and I can't find anyone I can readily compare her to (that's usually a Good Thing!). She's opened for the Indigo Girls and Ani Difranco before. She's on Amy Ray's Daemon Records label. She rocks! pax, Sarah ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 20:13:22 EST From: Kelly M730 Subject: Re: (harbinger) lefties vs. righties In a message dated 98-03-18 16:34:48 EST, you write: << i love my left hand, it's the side with all the pencil marks on it >> Oh my God, when i read that i 'bout fell out of my chair! A few of these recent threads have been "bandwagon" threads where everybody is just jumping in and throwing in their thoughts, no matter how immaterial. Let's please try to keep it on track. A bunch of posts about whether you're left-handed or right-handed aren't much fun to read, even though they are one of the few times that we ever hear from some of the lurkers. What ever happened to those intelligent analyses of Paula songs and other interesting topics we used to talk about here on Harbinger? I'd really hate to see Harbinger go the way of the FTE list, where it's completely reasonable and acceptable to post about what you ate for breakfast two days ago or whether or not you failed your spelling test last week. Nothing personal, folks, but buy a diary. Peace.
