This was posted on the Ecto list, and I figured some of you might be interested: << A while back someone on Ecto gave out the URLs for three custom CD companies - Musicmaker, superSonicBOOM, and CDuctive... I thought I'd do a quickie report on my first experiences with all three companies. Almost immediately, I need to say that all three companies' sites are best viewed with a graphic browser of the IE or Netscape variety (that would mean AWeb, iBrowse, or Voyager for our Amiga brethern). All three firms use RealAudio files. Take your time navigating thru each site, and don't buy anything on the first visits - give yourself time to familiarize yourself with everything. - --------- Musicmaker http://www.musicmaker.com Based in Vienna, VA. (home to America On-line). Perhaps the most "mainstream" of the three, with rock, jazz, blues, and easy listening dominant. Lots of material from the Fantasy labels (an exclusive Creedence Clearwater Revival listing, too!). The classical offerings are almost all from the Newport Classics label. (Dominick Argento and David Amran are among the few contemporary composers offered.) I ordered my first disc from them on a Sunday, and it arrived the following Saturday, glitch free. (One of the multi- movement works I ordered has one movement segue into another; the technology employed by all three firms inserts a one-second pause between tracks - a problem that I hope will be aired out one day.) superSonicBOOM http://www.supersonicboom.com/ Also based in Vienna, VA., but with more genres better represented than Musicmaker - ska, reggae, dance music, children's, world music, etc. (no classical offerings thus far). I was surprised to see some material from Madacy, Magnum, and TKO Licencing (no soundalike covers, mercifully). Morereceptive to hearing from regional artists - BevStanton (a/k/a Arthur Loves Plastic, who sampled some Susan McKeown here. Perhaps some of the musicians here on Ecto could licence material to sSB, and really fortify their catalogue (Heather? Land of the Blind? Kevin & Happy??). My order (an all-reggae disc) was ordered on a Friday night, and arrived the following Wednesday. Due to a botch up, my disc started not with "Days ah come" by Omega, but with "Y.M.C.A."(!) and something from the Lyrichord catalogue (the source of sSB's world offerings thus far). I promptly sent it back with a polite cover letter (explaining the problem, thanking them for their prompt service, and asking them nicely to try again)... and the replacement CD (with the correct programme) came promptly and courteously (bless you, Julie MacKinnon, sSB's Chief Operations Officer). Now that's customer service. CDuctive (say it "c-ductive") http://www.cductive.com/ Great opening to their site (a snake curving itself into the outer circle of a CD, then raising its head and pushing out its tongue)... This firm (part of Group K) is based in New York City and specializes in trance, hip-hop, techno, ambient, and other related styles. But they don't assume that you know these genres well; their site actually provides some information about each, plus mini-biographies and information about the labels who licenced material (Ninja Tune, Swim, Asphodel, Made to Measure et.al.). Sampler discs are availible. Their site is probably the easiest to navigate (not so reliant on frames). Because I am close to them (I live out on Long Island), the disc I ordered on a Wednesday arrived that Saturday, glitch-free. For now, ambient and illbient seem to be my fave styles at CDuctive. I hope they'll load up on more of those (and maybe some drone material?). - -------- The prices on the CDs I ordered from each averaged to about $20 with shipping figured in. All three firms use the Post Office for shipments. You can custom- title your discs (Musicmaker and superSonicBOOM print the titles on the discs; Musicmaker also prints the titles of the individual tracks). Mitsui Gold recordable CDs seem to be the discs of preference (except at Musicmaker, which used a Kodak disc for my order). I see serious potential in custom CDs, if enough artistes, bands, labels, and customers come forward and support them...which is why you may have noticed that I CC'd this note to each of their contacts listed above. Both sSB and CDuctive have their share of exclusive tracks (read: not available by any other means), and this might be something our Ectonian musicians might go for if they want it. Given the waste that's been going on at the majors, I say it's high time. >> - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 09:47:40 -0600 From: "Angela McGee" Subject: Re: (harbinger) Pre-Lilith ?
