She will be at the Wiltern again on 4/16. If this is true (because on the next day 4/17 it says she be at Montreal and that a long flight) I would like to meet with all the west-coast people on this list. Yeah don't let the east-coast people have all the fun. (Kenn... wink..wink) And could anyone varify this if Paula is really playing here? Because last time the WB also posted that Paula was playing at the House of Blues in Hollywood which turned out to be a mistake. All well if she will be here again she will play a few other venues like the last time. By the way the WB page also lists Beverly Hills (0n 4/2) as another venue but venue says Private Function. Is this really a "Private Function" or just a name of a club? I like to know. I'll just post the excert that has to do with Paula, but you can get the whole enchilada at: http://www.WallofSound.com/news/stories/2725index.html One thing McLachlan didn't like recently was being lumped together with Cole and Colvin at the Grammy Awards, where the three artists performed a mini-Lilith Fair set of truncated, back-to-back versions of their Grammy-winning hits. "You know, we all look the same, we all sound the same," McLachlan says sarcastically. "This one guy even kept calling me Shawn. Believe me, I was painfully aware of what was happening. So, yeah, I wish I could have done my own song instead of playing for a minute and a half. And it was really a shame Paula couldn't have done her song, because she had seven nominations. I guess they thought they were celebrating us, though. They were giving Lilith Fair a poke, saying, 'Hey, Lilith is a great thing.'" Don't miss a chance to hear someone you like just because of the way the gig is being promoted. And make no mistake - that's what they were doing on the radio, regardless of how they were doing it. Sounds like that was a morning drive "humor" show - just what I never listen to because they seem to be outlets for asinine dolts' ego trips. I don't know how much the radio station benefits from sponsoring the show, but whatever percentage of the ticket price they get will be far outweighed by your enjoyment. It will mean much more to YOU if you DO go than to THEM if you DON'T. Besides, you can always catch Paula AGAIN in Seattle!! The more times you see an artist the better your appreciation of her/his subtle nuances, plus you increase the chances of catching that one awesome show that will live with you always. For instance: The first time I saw Sarah McLachlan nearly four years ago (OK, U. of Hartford, 3/24/94), when "Fumbling" was just out, was an amazing show - an hour and a half of transcendent beauty and passion that caught me by surprise. The tape bears this out, and it's become one of my favorite gifts. I've seen her several times since, and each time she has been very good, but not quite like that - and she had the flu that night! You just never know - that's the magic of live music. So rise above the level of those idiots and enjoy!! Furthermore, you never know ifyou may not get the chance to see someone again, for whatever reason. Life is fleeting and you only go around once - this time, anyway. I am SO glad I saw Hendrix . . . Considering Lilith Fair is at least loosely connected with Nettwerk Productions (that would be Sarah McLachlan's label... not Paula's), I'd say contacting the official Lilith Fair website would probably be the best place to check. She sang a few bars! She was so funny and really did alot of interaction with the audience! She also did an Indigo Girls song... "Love's Recovery" (or is it "discovery"?--they sing both and I forget which is the title, anyway...) She was just great. She's very passionate and it's just her and a piano.. and I just can't say enough good things about her! She's just THAT good! Oh, and she also did "Wild Horses" (Stones/Sundays version) and talked about the first time she heard the Sundays remake of it, she was in Banana Republic and she just started weeping, she was so affected! Anyway, this is the Paula list, but I'm on a tangent here, and I can't get off! I was simply blown away by Chantal... So there's my two cents (give or take) on a possible pairing. Buenas dias, Phil - Perhaps you remember - we met at Toad's Place, New Haven. This goes on a bit long but I want to be thorough. Some thoughts on an opening act - Should have some recognition factor but not upstage Paula Should be able to stand on his/her own in front of a crowd impatient for Paula Should have a style compatible with but not similar to Paula's Should have a career in pretty good shape - ie, product, fan base, etc. My best bet - Sara Hickman, from Austin. Unsure how well-known she is outside of Texas, but she had 3 albums out before last year's fabulous "Misfits" (my personal favorite - sorry, Harbingers) and a new one produced by Adrian Belew due out next week - good timing. She does pop, rock, and humor. Tremendous variety in singing, guitar-playing, and songwriting styles. I haven't seen her live, but her albums are bursting with talent, personality, and professionalism. (BTW, she played Toad's 7 years to the day before Paula!) Great website, too (www.sarahickman.com, natch). Next bet - Martin Sexton, from the Berkshires. Making quite a name for himself on the folk circuit with his powerful, expressive, flexible voice and masterful guitar style. He works a room like noone else I know, and not with showmanship so much as by developing a real rapport with the audience. He could do some great duets with Paula. He has 2 albums out. Also - Jonatha Brooke, from Boston, now LA. Very polished singer/songwriter with a brilliant, complex pop style. 4 albums - 2 as The Story with Jennifer Kimball, 2 on her own - all very good. If you are interested e-mail me and I can put you in touch with them. I must have misread Holly's post. I've already deleted it so I can't check. Sorry if I caused any confusion. Maybe there WILL be a show added . . Oops!! There I go again. She was very gracious in Providence when i saw her last weekend. Got to meet her and obtained a photo, she signed my CD and spelled my name wrong... most ppl do, but she was most cool and asked me to stay behind so she could get me another CD i kept sayng NO DONT ITS OKAY, but she insisted, they didn't have any left and she said sorry more than a few times (i said please DONT BE), but she was just so so nice. Her stage presents is grand and she has a great sense of humor, I loved her covers, one of which was Always a Woman to Me by Billy Joel, and of course all her opriginal work...Surrounded breaks the heart, ya know. I definately second the bid for a bill with Chantal and Paula, though I am so dissapointed i didn;t get a chance to see Paula and Jonatha on the same stage :( That must have been a fantastic pairing!!! I debating whether to go or not because Paula will only make a brief appeance but anyone on the list is willing to go please tell me. Because if you are willing I’m willing. But I want to ask Phil (or anyone in the list) is about 4/2 “private function” in Bevaly Hills. What is this function? What I think is that this is a meeting of industry people, most likely the annual Warner Brothers convention where WB presents its products to the shareholders. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s another benifit. About the pre-Lilith concerts how about some jazz or soul or even world music artist to make things eclectic. I know we went over this on this list but I must write this. Today I over heard at the university that I attend (which I won’t mention it’s name) again about Paula Cole’s arm pit hair. I mean I heard this kind of crap over and over from unsophiscated people and just ignor them but today it was different. It really affected me. A guy was retelling the tastless comments which he heard from the local radio station (which I also won’t mention its name but it starts with a “k” and end with a “s” and has a moron disk jocky who sung a terrible hit dance song about a bird) to a girl. What really ticked off me was that here again these tastless things about armpit hair was initiated by a radio disc jocky just like in Portland, Oregon. Do these morons have anything else better to do than bringing up this trivial subject? They should have more responsibility on the public air wave. It’s sad now that teenagers who litsen to these station will start to identify Paula Cole with armpit hair thanks these moron disk jockys (and conversation that I heard prove that!) We should force these disk jockies to take more reponsible attitude!! This country is the only country (U.S.A. and maybe Canada) that makes BIG DEAL out of this topic. I mean in Europe this thing is so trivial, just ask any of the Europeans subcribing to this list (maybe not the ones in Britain). It’s a laughing matter. People in this country should look for more important and worthwhile things than this trivial crap.
