Do you think I am over reacting? On Monday, a friend of mine (who subscribes to this list) called to tell me she had just heard that Paula Cole would be headlining a local radio station's "Birthday Bash" concert here in Portland, OR on April 1. I had the opportunity to see Paula Cole here in October, and was really excited about the opportunity to see her live again. I was especially excited because based on Phil's last posting, it didn't look like she would be perfoming at Portland's Lilith in June. Paula was going to be headlining the show with three opening acts. On Tuesday morning, I decided to tune into this radio station's morning show to try to get more specific information about the show and when tickets would go on sale (today, for anyone who may be interested). I was absolutely horrified to find that this particular morning show had suddenly turned into a show exclusively about armpits. People were on the phone expressing their disgust, there were armpit shaving demonstrations going on in the studio, and thy were giving away tickets to the show to any woman who would walk into their studio and display their long armpit hair. There was even discussion about whether they should have a shaving demonstration on stage just prior to Paula's act. I have come to expect this kind of discussion from 14 year olds on the internet, and this has been even more prevalent since Paula's recent appearance on the Grammy's. To hear this type of discussion on a local radio station that is using Paula's name to promote and sell tickets to their "Birthday Bash" is offensive and in my opinion, totally irresponsible. I'm not talking about a 5 or 10 minute discussion, either, this went on throughout their entire morning show. Every 20 minutes or so I would tune in to try to get some information and this was always the topic of discussion. Despite my intense desire to see Paula Cole perform live again, I have decided not to attend this show. There are factors other than this that influenced my decision, but I must say that this is a primary reason. I do not want to support this show because of the radio station that is sponsoring it. I am also hoping that while she is in the area, Paula might headline her own show in Seattle. In this case, my friends (who agree with me and are also not attending the show) and I will joyously make the six hour round trip to see her perform again. So, do you think I am over reacting? I would truly like to hear your opinions. Do you think I am over reacting? No. It's not about 'over reacting', just doing what you are comfortable with. Unfortunately, by not going, you miss out on seeing Paula, and she misses out on your positive presence (which can make a difference). But I don't think that's any reason to subject yourself to an uncomfortable situation. Recently, I was asked to give a talk in a psychology class on a particular subject and related book. When I got to the class, the professor introduced me by saying, "For the past two years, our graduate students say that this book SUCKS, and so we want to know from you why this book doesn't suck". Let's just say, that that is one hell of a hostile introduction! Clearly, in some way I had been set up. But I was able to turn this situation around by not directly reacting to him and feeding into a confrontation. It was a bit like Aikido, I let his own bad manners take him out, and then I could just be charming, and funny, and generous. (BTW, the students loved this way of handling him!). However, if I had known prior to this event that there was a hostile atmosphere, it would have been difficult to want to show up. How has Paula handled 'hostile' or troubling situations in the past? Anyway, I'm two cents lighter, Linda >On Monday, a friend of mine (who subscribes to this list) called to tell >me she had just heard that Paula Cole would be headlining a local radio >station's "Birthday Bash" concert here in Portland, OR on April 1. If you don't know her, she is a very talented singer/songwriter from Brattleboro VT, and her album "Ride" made my Best of 1997 list. Should be an excellent show. Call 203-325-4466.
