After all, his brilliant lyrics, great depth, extraordinary vocal range ... pure sounding voice....gee, it is tough to recognize talent! ;-> On a more serious note, the acoustical setup was less than ideal and did little to be forgiving on those whose vocals needed some forgiveness. But that really allowed those with extraordinary vocals stand out. I think that it really demonstrated what an extraordinary voice Sarah possesses (no pun) when left to stand on its own. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo-test@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Mar 1998 05:31:09 EST From: LBeachMike Subject: Re: (harbinger) NEW SONGS! -Reply I was thinking more along the lines that the search engine simply returned some additional entries that in some way matched "paula" and/or "cole" with another artist sharing a similar or partial name match. Another is that all of these songs were written before and/or during the production of Harbinger and This Fire. Based on the BMI Work number assignments, it appears that "Throwing Stones" was the last song that was registered (it has the highest number at 003879580). It would make sense that these numbers are assigned sequentially, so if that, indeed, is the case, then all of these songs have been in the can for quite some time now. I find some of them very intriguing. "Book of Dorothy" sound like it'd be a interesting one. I might be mistaken, but I seem to recall hearing somewhere that Dorothy is Paula's middle name. Then there are "St. Nicholas Is Carrying A Gun" and "Generation Xmas"... is there a holiday album in PC's future? And what about "My Goat"??? I grew up with my mother having a pet African pygmy goat in the front yard of our suburban home. That one might touch me quite deeply. ;^) Guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm not really sure what other articles you've read or interviews you've seen, Cristian, but the TV Guide article is the first time I've ever heard Paula say that she was the ONLY white person in the Berklee gospel choir. I have almost every article or interview she's ever contributed to on hand and in referring back to them can confirm that this is a first - usually she says that she was one of a few whites in the choir. That leads me to believe that Paula, indeed, was misquoted by TV Guide. You mentioned that you and Paula went to Berklee at the same time and that you were friends, however, it was unclear from your post whether or not you were actually in the choir at the same time. If you were, were you in the choir the entire time that Paula was? I ask because I wonder if there's some possibility that Paula might have been in the choir at a time when there weren't as many whites as you recall. I hope you understand that, while none of us have any reason not to believe you, we also have no reason to readily accept these accusations without trepidation. You're not a frequent poster to the list (in fact, this is the first I think I've ever heard from you), so, naturally, there's going to be some level of hesitance in buying what you're selling without something to back it up. Please understand that there are no hard feelings on my part. You are entitled to your opinion. I never went to Berklee with Paula Cole and was never a member of the Berklee gospel choir. All I can base my assessment of the situation on is what I have read in articles and heard in interviews with Paula. Glad to hear you're still a fan of hers. Peace. Admittedly, the Pocahontas outfit wasn't doing anything for me (looked like it must have been unbearably hot under those lights), but, fringe aside, Paula sounded great. "Elsewhere" is my favorite of Sarah Mc's many songs but I'd heard Sarah perform it so many times that it had lost some of its original beauty for me. As such, it was wonderful to hear the strength and beauty of Paula's voice harmonizing with Sarah's own gorgeous set of pipes. Paula's contribution put a surprising and beautiful turn on what has always been a well-written and wonderfully arranged piece of music. Just wondering what Sarah thought about Paula's improv change-up of the lyrics to the bridge of the song.... oops! Peace. If you give any kind of reaction to this site, you are very obviously not going to change his or her mind. Let them say what they will and just be glad that the person who developed this site has found someplace to vent. Better on the internet than at one of Paula's shows. I was in the mood for some new music today.....so I drove over to Borders (my home away from home). Started in the magazines and picked up RockerGirl, Q Magazine, and a couple of other music-related things.......and as I was looking around, I heard a female voice with an acoustic guitar. Wandering around the corner, I discovered that the friendly folks at Borders were hosting another one of their free concerts -- this time featuring a woman named Ratsy. Well, she was sounding pretty good, so I scanned the area to see if she was selling her cd's.....sure enough, she was. I grabbed the last copy of "Squished Under a Train" and a copy of her newest release, "The Subway Songstress Years." Then I sat down to listen. She was very entertaining! Had a cute way of smiling and curtseying after each song. When I spoke to her during a break, I asked her if she'd ever been compared to Christine Lavin because of the humor in both of their song lyrics. She said she'd just met Christine, but thought of herself more along the lines of Cheryl Wheeler. Her songs are simple, her voice clear, and she plays a pretty good guitar. I just have to share the lyrics to one of my favorites that she performed: If You're Not Dead you hold my hand, while we're walking I steer you 'round on streets nearby we sit and watch my christmas tree it feels so nice, sitting here with you you ask if I'm free thursday too you have to go, we kiss goodbye and you call me wednesday night ask if everything's alright which is why i just don't see why you're doing this to me i feel stood up, you haven't come i'm wondering what could be wrong if you're not dead, why don't you call if you're not dead, then what is wrong were you squished under a train are you in a lot of pain wondering what is wrong with you perchance a mishap at the zoo i feel stood up, you haven't come i'm wondering what could be wrong if you're not dead, why don't you call if you're not dead, then what is wrong i'm giving up on you tonight i'm going to bed turn out the light i've got this feeling you're not dead you probably just misplaced your head Ratsy will be performing in Atlanta and in Massachusetts soon.....check her out at www.ratsy.com She's definitely worth a listen!
