From MTV Online (www.mtv.com) ************************************* Paula Cole Gives Grammys The Finger, But It's Not What You Think You didn't see it Wednesday night, but Grammy winner Paula Cole flipped off the audience during her performance, but none of the music world elite exposed to the act should be offended. Cole, who turned her seven nominations in to one award for Best New Artist, was in the middle of her performance of "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" when she raised her middle finger high for all of Radio City Music Hall to see. A spokesperson for Cole's record label, Warner Bros., told "TV Guide's" website (which currently boasts a snapshot of the offending gesture) that the digit was "part of the satire" of the song, "where the woman is at home while the guy's out having a beer. It's for all the girls in the audience." Unfortunately, only the girls gathered at Radio City got the message, as CBS cut the shot from its Grammy telecast. ************************************* And this is from the TV Guide site (http://www.tvgen.com/dish/0227d.htm) In case you missed it, TVGEN reported yesterday that Paula Cole flipped the bird in front of the Grammy audience at Radio City Music Hall during her abbreviated version of "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" "I asked her afterward, 'What was that all about?' and she said, 'Exactly what it means,' and walked away," says Kevin Mazur, a photographer who captured Cole's finger-flipping Kodak moment, which never made it into the Grammy telecast. But before anybody gets the wrong idea, Cole's off-color esture is part of her act, according to a spokeswoman at Warner Bros. Records. "She performs that in her show," she told us. "It had nothing to do with people watching on TV or people in the audience or anything like that. I think it's during the line, 'You go have a beer.' It's part of the satire of 'Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?,' where the woman is at home while the guy's out having a beer. It's for the girls in the audience." ¯ Susan Campbell Beachy ************************************* There's an accompanying photo. An AWESOME accompanying photo of Paula flying her lovely bird that I am so happy someone managed to catch on film. :^) Damn, I just love Paula to bits!! I can just see the look on her face when she responded to Kevin Mazur with "Exactly what it means." I'm guessing her expression was something akin to the one she sports in the Cowboys video after singing "you go have a beer." :^D Sock it to 'em, Paula!!! Peace. I think that there were probably very few people in the audience who "got it." I fully support her performing the song this way on the Grammy's since this *is* the way she performs the song when she tours, but, it is unfortunate that many people in the audience may have felt offended. I have to say I really loved Paula's acceptance speech. I loved the fact that she didn't get up there and thank a bunch of people that most of us have never heard of. She thanked her parents, her teachers, and the musicians who have inspired her over the years. I was so pleased for her that I must say I felt a little misty... The article was written by USA Today's Karen Thomas: > Paula Cole, Colvin - who announced she's pregnant (her husband is > photographer Mario Erwin) - and McLachlan arrived at the gala > together. The trio, all nominated for pop female vocal (McLachlan > won), performed parts of their songs on the show in a single segment. > ''I certainly wish we could have performed for ourselves. We were all > angry about that. I'm grateful for that minute and a half,'' Cole sniped > from the red carpet as she arrived. ''I'd rather be home in sweat pants.'' Why shouldn't she snipe? Hell, I don't blame any of them for being pissed off about all that medley crap. Stevie Nicks mentioned during her VH1 interview (with my least favorite VJ ever, John Fugelsang) that FM would have preferred to perform just one of their songs, too, rather than a medley. I didn't see anyone asking the solo male artists or all-male bands who were nominated to triple-up and perform a medley of their songs. I mean, c'mon... Hanson got to perform "MMMBop" in its entirety. They could have just as easily performed 20 seconds of that tune and I think everyone would've gotten the gist of it. So, some flash-in-the-pan all-guy bubblegum band gets a longer spot than someone who is trying to stretch herself artistically and wants to breathe new life into the music scene. Paula had every right to be angry about being forced to perform a 1 minute, 40 second version of Cowboys in a medley with two of her peers, especially when it is apparently being forced upon her by Grammy coordinators so that they can continue to afford preferential treatment to the male artists and bands that they still seeing as being a bigger draw. What is even worse is that there were three other Grammy nomiated artists (Sheryl Crow, Fiona Apple, and Meredith Brooks) that also performed at Lilith Fair and weren't even included in the Lilith artist "lump." At risk of coming across as a hard core feminist, I feel that forcing three artists who managed to bring in a total of 7 grammys between them to share a time slot (in addition to excluding other Lilith artists) they trivialized all of what Lilith Fair stands for. I saw the entire episode as a slap in the face instead of recognition for the astounding success of a tour that many people never even believed could happen in the first place. I'm not even going to get into the point about giving 1 minute and 40 seconds to an artist that was nominated for SEVEN grammys...Aaargh!
