It's now time to award artists that are changing music history now. That's what Grammies are for. James Taylor is awesome ( in my opinion) and I loved Hourglass, but he is doing the same kind of stuff he has been. I am happy for him that he won, but I am not so sure it shouldn't have gone to someone who is breaking new ground. And what is with Dylan getting best contemporaty folk album and best album? Was it a folk album or a mainstream album? Does that mean he could have won for best country album or any other catagory too? I don't see Dylan doing anything real earthshaking either. I am not a real big Dylan fan though. "We didn't know what we had when we did it,'' Dylan said in accepting the best album award. ''But we did it anyway.'' But Elton got one for a twenty year old song that he changed the words to? What is next? Will he change the words when Jordan retires again? Shawn was good but I don't think record and song of the year. I really thought Paula would get 2 or 3 though. Only new artist? I think the Grammys need to get their heads out of the .......ground. That recognition was well-deserved and I'm very happy to know that she wasn't overlooked after the multiple nominations. Truthfully, I mostly felt the same way Paula did about the whole deal. Just the fact that she had been nominated so many times was exciting. However, it really put a big ol' smile on my face to see her win for Best New Artist and to receive the award from one of her greatest inspirations, Aretha Franklin. There was no way that Paula ever could have known that the presentations were going to work out that way, so it was cool to see her doubly surprised - first, by winning the award and, second, by being on the same stage with the Queen of Soul. Just goes to show that life is still full of surprises. Paula looked radiant last night. Both of the dresses she chose were beautiful (especially the claret number she wore to accept the award). Have to admit, I've been wondering what she was going to come up with. I've been a little concerned after seeing what she's been wearing in a few of her recent photo shoots and TV appearances. Naturally, the snippet of "Cowboys" was less than stellar due to its brevity, but PC had me cheering out loud for her when she made the most of her minute-and-forty-seconds by knocking out a portion of the "Jolene" human beatbox at the end of her spot. Looked very much to me like she wanted to make sure she got the attention of everyone in the Radio City Music Hall audience as well as those watching at home. And, my oh my, but she did a top-notch job of it!! Paula is so smart about using moments like that to make her mark. Can't help but be happy about that. :^) Personally, I didn't feel that anyone was given an award undeservedly last night, with the possible exception of Record Of The Year. I truly do feel that Paula should have won that award. However, I can also totally understand why it went to Shawn Colvin. She has seniority and that plays a rather large role in the voting most of the time. I knew there was a good chance Paula *wouldn't* win, but I'm just surprised that they went with Shawn and not Sheryl Crow. That's who I figured would take that one home. Nevertheless, I didn't see any giveaways last night. Those who went home winners did so deservedly. I was pleased to see recognition given to: * Erykah Badu - The lady is just too good and too beautiful for words. The number she did with Wyclef was one of the best of the entire night. * Allison Krause - She and Union Station have so often been overlooked for their wonderful work. Too bad those awards weren't televised. * Jamiroquai - This group has been the freshest blood to hit the scene in ages - they deserved to win something. * John Fogerty - My favorite winner of the entire nightj. John's sound just never gets tired and _Blue Moon Swamp_ is incredible. * Tool - Why has it taken so long for these guys to win an award? Talk about serious musicians! Paula is a lot more concerned about her music than her image, but these guys are even more committed than her! They have never appeared on even one of their album covers. They never show up in any of their amazing stop-action animation videos. And, they almost never give publicity interviews. They just make great music. * Trisha Yearwood - LeAnn has a major set of pipes, but _How Do I Live_ sounds much more believable coming from someone who isn't still worrying about her grade point average and the prom. Good going, Trisha! * Dee Dee Bridgewater - I know most of you have no idea who Dee Dee is, but take my word for it, she deserved to win for Best Jazz Performance. Biggest annoyances last night: Every thick-tongued, unquestionably moronic utterance from Old Dirty Bastard's mouth during his completely disrespectful commandeering of the stage during Shawn Colvin's acceptance speech. Make better music Wu-Tang... maybe then you can have your own time on stage where you can say whatever you want without infringing upon the rights of people who have worked just as hard and just as long (longer in Shawn's case) as you have to get your music heard. Will Smith saying that he is against gangsta rap and then stating in the same breath that he admired Tupak Shakur and Biggie Smalls (two of the most well-known culprits (and ultimate victims) of the glamorization of gangsta life and gun violence) for their commitment to stopping the violence. Just more lip service being paid to the problem of urban violence. Michelle Visage's never-ending babbling on VH1's pre- and post-Grammy coverage. What a nightmare she is! Hell, if they were going to put someone from the RuPaul show out there, why not just get RuPaul? Where the hell was AJ Hammer? Jewel and Sheryl Crow both looking like they'd been sucking lemons for the past hour during their on-camera shots. Security at Radio City Music Hall - Old Dirty Bastard managed to get most of his ludicrous speech out before anyone made any attempt to subdue him (and what about maybe turning his mike off?) and the wacko interpretive dancer was on stage long enough to become a true part of Bob Dylan's act before they dragged him off the stage, crotch first. This last guy was a true threat. Thankfully, all he wanted to do was dance. Can you just imagine how awful it would have been if he had intended to do harm to Mr. Dylan? Perhaps Michael Greene should be a bit more concerned about security at his big show and less caught up in all of the nonsense with Rudy Guliani. So, there's my rants and raves about last night. I suppose a lot has to do with commercial value......but James Taylor? Yes, I think he's talented (I grew up with his music)......but he sings ballads......nothing nearly as *daring* as Paula sings. I was reading the closing credits (yes, I need a life) and followed along with the part about how the voting is accomplished. Basically, it said that the nominations are from a first round of voting by the people involved in the musical world......and then after the nominations have been made, there's a second round of voting to determine the winners. Maybe there were just a lot of people in the musical world who haven't listened to anything by Paula except *that Cowboy song*. Paula's voice is so pure...her talent so extraordinary.....how could musical people not see that and recognize it? Listening to some of the other performers on the Grammy show, I couldn't even understand why some of them were even a part of the competition. That guy who sings the Space Jam song about flying.....he was just the slightest bit sharp....... And one of the female singers was a tad off, too......I can't remember which one -- I guess it was just the fast-paced vibrato in her voice or something......And yes, the sound sucked majorly! Well, anyway......I just had to say all of that. Maybe I'm > more of a purist than I thought I was, but I found it painful to sit through > what she did to it. It's opera, fergodssake!! Never heard Bolton's version (thankfully!), but I think Aretha did an unbelievably good job considering she found out she was going to be singing an aria just about two minutes before she was going to have to take the stage in the stead of Luciano. I don't recall Aretha ever touting herself as any kind of an opera singer. She certainly didn't last night. Cut her some slack, man. She was asked to fill in for Pavarotti and she came through and delivered the goods. She deserves credit for doing as well as she did with no preparation whatsoever. If you want to criticize Aretha's talents, take aim at her newest release "A Rose Is A Rose." Now THERE'S something to shake your head at. She's far better than that. Peace. I guess I would have preferred they skip the piece altogether if Luciano couldn't do it. Though that would have sucked for the orchestra. :( This is probably my favorite aria that Pavarotti performs...Imagine Celine Dion stepping in at the last minute to perform a sappy torch version of "Hitler's Brothers", if you will. :-) > She deserves credit for doing as well as she did with no preparation > whatsoever. Didn't Sting say something about her having performed it recently? I'll admit I was FFing much of the show, so I missed some details. > If you want to criticize Aretha's talents, take aim at her newest release > "A Rose Is A Rose." I chose to FF through her first song because it was late and I can't stand the Blues Brothers. But I have no doubt she did great. I just would have preferred she steered clear of opera...
