So why isn't Paula being showcased alone? Do 7 Grammy nominations mean you share the stage and spotlight with two other performers? The CALENDER section of the TIMES on Sunday printed an interview w/ Cole and Colvin, where Paula compared being put in a year-of-the-woman-in-rock (isn't that every year?) medley as akin to 'back-of-the-bus' politics. She puts a lot into her performance, and she has a wellspring of emotions to draw on for her inspiration. As fiery as she was, she still seemed a little distant, as though she were consciously performing rather than expressing deeply felt personal beliefs, as artists such as Sarah McLachlan and Ani DiFranco do. Perhaps this is a reflection of her nearly expressionless face, which masks her emotions behind its blank beauty. Perhaps it's because she has so refined her stage persona that her real self has been subjugated by it. Maybe she is unwilling to be that vulnerable in public, thus exposing herself to unwanted scrutiny. Perhaps she has been touring so much, and faced so much attention and pressure, that she is running on autopilot. I prefer this last explanation, as it seems borne out by the similarity of set lists from her shows. This is not meant to detract from the experience of what was clearly the best show I've seen in months, but to be a way of understanding why I felt somewhat dissatisfied. There were indeed many delightful moments - a burning "Feeling Love" on which guitarist Kevin Barry stretched out extensively; a sarcastic reading of the line in "Cowboys" - "You go have a beer" - accompanied by a single-finger salute that utterly refuted the character's previous caving in; her bold use of non-standard instrumentation, especially finger cymbals on "Road To Dead," which vastly improved my opinion of that song. From an audience member's standpoint, I was very glad it was a non-smoking all-ages show. All ages meant there was a net stretched separating drinking and non-drinking sections - thank goodness (and/or the management) there was an option. I was smart enough to stand in the non-drinking section, as over near the bar the usual chatter and occasional drunken shouting continued throughout the show, as if it was just another night out andthese people hadn't paid nearly $20 to be there and be so rude. At least from where I stood that wasn't so loud. Oh - they had a "This Fire" songbook on sale, so I was able to check the lyrics, and for the record - she does indeed say "Damn skippy baby" in "Feeling Love", but it's definitely "prairie SUN" in "Cowboys." Another is that all of these songs were written before and/or during the production of Harbinger and This Fire. Based on the BMI Work number assignments, it appears that "Throwing Stones" was the last song that was registered (it has the highest number at 003879580). It would make sense that these numbers are assigned sequentially, so if that, indeed, is the case, then all of these songs have been in the can for quite some time now. I find some of them very intriguing. "Book of Dorothy" sound like it'd be a interesting one. I might be mistaken, but I seem to recall hearing somewhere that Dorothy is Paula's middle name. Then there are "St. Nicholas Is Carrying A Gun" and "Generation Xmas"... is there a holiday album in PC's future? And what about "My Goat"??? I grew up with my mother having a pet African pygmy goat in the front yard of our suburban home. That one might touch me quite deeply. ;^) Guess we'll just have to wait and see. I agree that the Jones Beach amphitheatre isn't the best venue in the East. In fact, it probably qualifies as one of the worst. Last year, the Lilith performers complained of how little room there was backstage and how dirty everything was back there (even a few stories of r-a-t-s... ugh!). The attendees, likewise, complained about the small size of the venue and the total lack of flow. It was nearly impossible to get back to the two smaller stages to see other performers, like Tara MacLean, Juliana Hatfield and Alisha's Attic. As far as the long way out to JB, I'm not saying anything. I've gone a hell of lot further than Long Island to see various artists perform (four or five hours specifically to see Paula in Boston, two hours to see Happy Rhodes in Philly, thirteen hours to see Sarah Mc. in Michigan). Besides, that drive out to JB in the summer time is beautiful. I love riding out there. I guess I hesitate to be too harsh in judging whether or not Lilith should be at Jones Beach again. I mean, yeah... I hate that venue. However, I can't say that I have any better options in mind. Randall's Island would be great but the main stage set-up is really all wrong for Lilith Fair. It needs to be outdoors, so the Garden is out, in addition to all of the other big indoor venues. All of the other outdoor venues are even further away from Manhattan than Jones Beach. Not much in the way of choice out this way when you want to do it outdoors. Hope the Lilith line-up makes the show worthwhile this year! NO MORE CARDIGANS!!! Peace. Paula's article from Feb. 21-27 TV Guide. Here's a quote next to her full length picture. "Although her lyrics may be misunderstood, there's no mistaking the ferocious talent of Paula Cole, who has emerged as an overwhelming favorite at the Grammy Awards" Next to a picture of Paula performing, "In concert, Cole connects intensely with her material." "Suddenly Paula" by Christina Kelly "I will do the laundry if you pay all the bills," sings Paula Cole in "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" Her widely misinterpreted take on gender stereotypes describes a beery, behind-the-times mate who wouldn't know a vacuum cleaner from a curling iron. But the lyrics capture him with a sarcasm so subtle that you can't blame people for not getting the joke. Writing in the New York Times, a (male) critic missed the irony and described Cole as "somewhere to the right of Tammy Wynette." No doubt a number of fans have been drawn to Cole's music out of some misguided longing for oldfashioned Anita Bryant-type values. But misunderstanding alone can't explain Cole's skyrocketing success. The singer is VH1's February Artist of the Month. Her ardent second album, This Fire, has gone gold. She is the most recognized woman at this week's Grammy Awards with seven nominations, and is the first singer since Bobbie Gentry in 1967 to be nominated in all four major categories--song, record, album, and new artist--in the same year. Cole's newfound acclaim clearly stems from other factors, including her impassioned voice and piano playing, her participation in last summer's Lilith Fair--and maybe, just maybe, the fact that the striking 29-year-old appears naked on the cover of This Fire. Her decision to pose (albeit artistically) in the nude is all the more intriguing because Cole refused to have any pictures of herself adorn her first album, Harbinger. "I was really defensive about any sexualization of my image," she says. Not anymore. "With some evolution of my soul, I was able to look at that side of myself that was so wounded." Cole is vague about the experiences that harmed her. "There's a lot that I don't want to go into, mostly having to do with not being educated and prepared for the world," she says. "I was very naive." She has described her childhood in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, as lower middle class. Her mother, Stephanie, was an artist, and her father, Jim, was earning a Ph.D. in entomology while raising Paula and her older sister, Irene, now a nurse in Berkeley, California. "My family had this ritual of going down to the newstand every Sunday," says Cole. "We were tight on money, and I had to choose between a comic book and a candy bar, and I made up a song about that." Cole drove herself so hard to earn A's in high school that she developed ulcers. "Music was always a fun family thing in our house," she recalls, "but my folks didn't know if I really had talent. So I went to a couple of summer programs at Berklee College of Music (in Boston). The teachers really encouraged me, and I got a great scholarship." At Berklee, she studied jazz singing and joined the gospel choir. "I was the only white singer there," she says. "That completely changed me. I came from such a representative white town. I loved Berklee." The year after graduation didn't go so well. "I found myself singing in the lounge of the (Logan Airport) Hilton. I was depressed with my musical reality." Who wouldn't be, singing Taylor Dayne and Mariah Carey songs? "My voice is soulful, dark and good, but I can't do (Carey's) pyrotechnics; that made me look pretty bad," she says, laughing. Cole moved to San Francisco to see a bit of the world outside New England. "I was a bakery clerk and wrote and wrote and wrote," she says. "I was very lonely out there, but in hindsight I realize that I needed to be that lonely to write all those songs." She landed a deal with the Imago label, and after Peter Gabriel heard an advance tape of her first album, he asked her to tour with him as a backup singer. "I was ecstatic because I was a worshiper of his music." Cole subsequently toured with Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan, and that resulted in an invitation to join the distaff festival. Her favorite experience at Lilith, says Cole, was "presenting a check to local charities and hearing them talk about how the money would help so many people's lives. And also seeing young girls in the audience having the Fair in their lives. I wish I could have had that when I was 14." After touring through the fall (including a brief return to Lilith), Cole will take some time off before beginning her third record early in 1999. "Artistically I want to move on," she says. "I have a lot of work, at least an album's worth of material." Cole, who lives in New York City with her boyfriend, musician- filmmaker Seyi Sonuga, is also thinking about when she'll have kids. "Stevie Nicks always says that her one regret is that she didn't have children," Cole says. "I want the humility that children bring. I don't want to lose my fertility." Her words sound very much like the lyrics to her song "I Don't Want to Wait." Her Grammy nominations thrill her. "I feel very honored," she says. "I'm really trying not to be competitive because I don't like that quality in myself. And I feel that in the end, all my hard work has finally paid off." That's all folks! Hope you enjoyed the reading. Oh, here's something from the Cheers and Jeers section of TV Guide also. Jeers to partial credits. We applaud the WB's Dawson's Creek for displaying photos of the artists whose music has been used during the episode at the show's end. But we can't help noticing that this arrangement is limited to singers such as Paula Cole and the BoDeans, who happen to record for Warner Bros. or Sony, the labels affiliated with the studios that produce the show. On one recent episode, for instance, Meredith Brooks's song "What Would Happen" was used prominently. Yet shown were photos of such obscure Sony and Warner Bros. artists as Sophie Zalmani and Eddi Reader. Brooks was never mentioned. It's great to celebrate the music, but the intent should be to inform, not to blatantly promote. Thought this was interesting and that some of ya'll would care to know this opinion. TV Guide didn't print a name with this opinion, sorry. Thanks for hanging in there guys, I'm finished now. ~Sharley - ------ =_NextPart_000_01BD422E.701BF090-- - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo-test@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 16:39:01 -0500 From: "Kenn" Subject: (harbinger) Latest Paula Cole Tour Information Here's the latest from Pollstar and other sources: 03/06/98 - Hamburg - Germany - Grünspan 03/08/98 - Baden-Baden - Germany - SWF 3 03/09/98 - Berlin - Germany - Loft 04/17/98 - Montreal - Quebec - Le Spectrum 04/19/98 - Toronto - Ontario - Convocation Hall 04/20/98 - Pittsburgh Pennsylvania - Metropol 04/23/98 - New York New York - Beacon Theatre 04/25/98 - Boston Massachusetts - Hatch Shell 04/26/98 - Providence Rhode Island - Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel 04/30/98 - West Palm Beach Florida - SunFest 05/01/98 - Atlanta Georgia - Music Midtown Festival 05/02/98 - Nashville Tennessee - Riverfront Park 05/03/98 - Memphis Tennessee - Beale St. Music Festival Peace. The song Paula does with Jules, "The Last In Love," is a nice song. Not the best I've ever heard, but it's nice. As has been mentioned, Paula does one duet with Jules and (something I didn't know) Jay Bellerose plays percussion on 11 of the 15 tracks on the CD. In no way to I mean to insult Jules Shear, but he doesn't seem to have much of a voice. I'd never heard him sing until now. At times, his voice reminds me of that kid who sang that obnoxious "How Do You Talk To An Angel?" song. You know... the one that ended up on Beverly Hills 90210. In fact, (in my opinion) almost every song on the CD would have sounded better if he wasn't singing on it. Unless you are very heavily into that Ecto kind of music (which, with the exception of my love for the music of Happy Rhodes, I am not), then I can't say I'd recommend purchasing this CD - not even for Paula's performance. I mean, she's good and everything, but it's nothing special. Paula's voice is unquestionably better than Jules' on the song they sing. I can liken most of the CD to chewing very slowly and deliberately on a big, dry piece of cardboard. Each song pretty much sounds just like the one before it. Shear's voice slips back and forth from feigned raspiness to Dylanesque nasal tones (which you might like if you're into that kind of music). The only songs that really are worth mentioning are the duets with Susan Cowsill and Patty Griffin (her voice is as great as always on this song; his isn't). So, if you're desperate for new Paula music, then go ahead and buy this groaner. Otherwise, save your money. Peace. Well that makes it official. They tried to say that the nominating committee was becoming more hip, recognizing new performers and kinds of music...well I think this officially makes that a load of crap....Best Dance Song (a highly touted new category) goes to Donna Summer.....Album of the year...Bob Dylan....and Best Pop Album...James Taylor!!! Give me a break...this is the year of the GEYSER...what if you are under 40 you are not supposed to win....I think the grammy's are as bad as ever and will always continue to be...they do not award excellence..they award what they like...and their taste sucks in so many ways it is impossible to count. I can't wait until next year when they nominate a ton of great people and then the give the awards to the same old group of people. amy - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo-test@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Feb 1998 23:18:29 EST From: DWspinTHIS@aol.com Subject: Re: (harbinger) Congratulations Paula!
