All of these recent concert reviews are making me nostalgic of seeing Paula perform in Portland last October... It was the first time I'd seen her perform as the headliner and it absolutley changed my life. Anyway..... When reading Jimmy's review below, I was reminded of something that happened when I saw Paula at the Portland Art Museum... She kept making comments at the beginning of the show that she was cold and would someone please turn down the air conditioning on stage... she repeated this request at least three times before she finally disappeared off stage and came back out wearing her bathrobe, laughing, and saying "Sometimes you just have to take care of things your own damned self." The crowd cheered and she did the rest of her set up until Hitler's Brothers wearing that robe over her dress and was absolutley radiant and wonderful. At the beginning of Hitler's Brothers, she did this little strip tease thing with the bathrobe and continued the show and encores in her regular stage clothes (plus La Vie outfit). I was fortunate to see Paula perform everthing from This Fire except for NE ..... At the venue where I saw her, the crowd was also absolutley silent and enraptured, and the Feelin love free form vocals were simply brilliant. Judging from the reaction of the crowd, there were many people there who hadn't heard the song (and I assume the rest of This Fire) before. My opinion is that Paula completely won over everyone in the crowd who may not have been familiar with all of her work. Hope y'all don't mind my nostalgic ramblings.... I wasn't a part of this list serve when I saw her perform, and I thought people might be interested in the way Paula handled the air-conditioning problem with ease and grace and was still absolutley magnificent! Well, after my hour and 15 minute drive, I arrive there with my friend, anxious as to whether tickets were sold out...We waited in line before people started going around selling them. I got sold a ticket from a lady only to find out that that lady was Jean Sapula...what a small world!! We get inside and had terrific standing positions...right in front of the mike...the only problem: NO CAMERAS!! but that's okay because i got almost a whole roll at the Toad's Show!! Anyway, so we waited a good amount of time before the Devlins came on! Finally they do, and they played for a while...they are a good band, Colin is definately a good sight to watch..hehe..And paula and co. came out to dance with the devlins on their last performance...that was great!! finally, after what seemed like hours---PAULA!!!! She was looking as beautiful as usual! Damn, she is talented....between the clarinet, the finger cymbals, the hand clapping, the whistling, the piano, the drum, and need i forget---THE SINGING???!!!!! She played her set beautifully and i must agree...this audience respected her, NOT like the one in CT!!! They were just rude!!!!!! Feelin Love was amazing...the whole crowd was mesmerized!!! I cannot help it...my fav song was ME...maybe because it has major personal connections to me!! Way to go Paula!! I stood next to jean the whole show and she was a sweetheart! (hi jean) Got to meet Phil after the concert...never did see Judy, there were so many people!! All in all, it was a much better concert than Toad's... Well, i'm going to close for now! can't wait to get my pics developed!!!! will post them on the web as soon as i get them!!!!!
