Made the trip up to New Haven, CT on Thursday to see Paula. While we were waiting on line to get inside, we met Jean Sapula (it's was great talking to you, Jean... sorry we lost each other in the swell of people). Never did see Courtney that night. Also, at long last, I got to meet my bud, Jim McNamara (which was funny because I *could* have met Jim last year at the same venue but I didn't know that he was who he was... long story). Nevertheless, it was cool to get to talk to you all and I'm glad we finally got to put the names with faces. Once we got inside, it was pretty clear that getting anywhere near enough to the stage to hand the tigerlilies and other gifts to Paula was going to be impossible. When Jim and I went to Toad's for Paula's show there last February, there were seriously only about 40 people in the whole place. This time around, there were easily 400 people in the joint and they were packed in like sardines in front of the stage. So, realizing that a dramatic presentation of the gifts wasn't going to be feasible, I opted for asking Paula's guitarist, Kevin, to take the gifts to Paula downstairs in the dressing room. He confirmed later in the night that she received the flowers and the other stuff and that she was very appreciative of the gesture. As Jean mentioned in her post, Paula's performance on Thursday night was incredible. She seemed to be very much on top of her game. Her voice sounded great. Very clear and strong. Good thing, too, because like Jean said, at least a third of the crowd didn't appear to be there to see Paula (lots of really obnoxious Devlins fans, though...). Or, even worse, they were there to see Paula do the three songs they've heard on the radio or seen a video for. There were a lot of those folks. You can always tell because they're the ones who go ape-shit when they hear the first strains of "Cowboys" or "IDWTW" and they're also the ones who are usually dancing (... stumbling) along to the song. I seemed to be standing at ground-zero of the "passing fancy" crowd. Lucky me. :^P Additionally, on every slow, quiet song, that group of attendees decided to start up their own very loud conversations to pass the time until Paula did another song they had heard before. During "Ordinary," it got so loud that you really couldn't even hear Paula singing at one point. The same thing happened at the end of "Feelin' Love." And, yet, as soon as the song (which none of them had even heard because of their talking) ended, they all went crazy with applause. Guess they didn't want her to think they weren't paying attention or that they didn't appreciate that she was up there trying to entertain them. Perhaps I've misjudged them. Maybe they didn't realize they were being rude. I'm only mentioning this because I think that those of you who are planning to see Paula at one of these upcoming small venue shows should know that the Grammy nominations have attracted a rather sizable and most undesirable element to the shows. Financially, I suppose it's great for Paula and WB because they're selling more tickets. However, it's also really bad for Paula because half the people at the show aren't paying attention which pisses her off. But, most of all, it's the worst for Paula's more dedicated fans because gone are the days of seeing a Paula Cole show without a bunch of disrespectful, fly-by-night fans talking and yelling all around us. Kiss goodbye the days of getting close to the stage, too. Please don't interpret this as sour grapes. It's not. I mean, this has happened many times before to fans of artists who make it big. I certainly expected that this time would come. I just didn't expect it to come just yet. Oh, well... Life is full of adjustments and this will just be one more of them. As long as I can hear her, it doesn't matter so much to me if I can't see the sweat on her upper lip. ;^) Despite the inconsiderate crowd, Paula perservered. The set was wonderful. It seemed that she has chosen to work out some new instrumental arrangements for the songs. They sound notably different from the way they did just a few months ago. The only rendition I wasn't crazy about on Thursday night was "Feelin' Love." Kevin played a very sexy guitar solo on that song, but Paula's free-form vocalizations at the end of the song went on for far too long and seemed to end up losing the attention of everyone in the place (including some of her long-time fans). The highlight of the entire evening, for me, was "La Vie En Rose." What a cool interpretation of that song! I've listened to Edith Piaf for many years, but I would never have imagined that that song could be made to sound the way Paula and the band made it sound. Talk about a kickass tune! Paula's voice was so strong and she was just groovin' away out there with her Carol Channing wig and her big feather boa. She was having a lot of fun by that time and it was great to see that look of confidence on her face and in her smile. In addition to "La Vie En Rose," I also enjoyed how she has worked her middle finger into "Cowboys" and opening the show with "Suwannee Jo" was brilliant. Most interesting comment from Paula during the set came when Paula mentioned that she was just in the last issue of Entertainment Weekly. She said it was great and everything, except that EW airbrushed her pit hair out of one of the photos (I'm guessing it's the one of her on the bed). Naturally, that pissed her off and she said she's going to be contacting EW's editor. Give 'em hell, Paula!! (Hey, EW! Leave those pits alone!!) ;^) That's about it. Finally got the poster of Paula sitting in a chair. Snagged a couple of other posters that night. Got my t-shirts. Got to hear Paula do "La Vie En Rose".... All in all, a very good night. :^) Peace. I already have two copies of my own, but I figured someone on the list might still be looking for this one. I paid $25 (U.S.) for it (just like the ones everyone else got from Rainy Day Records). If you want this disc, please contact me as soon as possible. I'll make arrangements with whoever I hear from first. Two things... if you want it, please be prepared to pay for the cost of the CD, plus all the shipping costs. Also, please be able to send the payment in the form of a money order. I really don't like dealing with personal checks (they have a habit of bouncing, y'know?). So, hope this helps someone out. Take care. Peace. Thanks to Kevin Barry, the Devlins' sideman, we got our gift backstage. As I mentioned to Kenn after the show, it was a good thing our flowers weren't grabbed accidentally at the end, when the band tossed roses to the frontrowers. Incidentally, I was a frontrower after probably a hundred people cleared out in front of me before "La Vie." All I can say about that song was....the band was on fire (in more ways than one)! It was my tenth Paula Cole performance (as I so boasted to the newspaper editor that interviewed myself and Mr. Carpenter before the show) (we must have looked important). A special one despite the fact that I, too had to hold back the anger when it came to the jibber-jabbers. "Hush, Hush, Hush!" I wanted to yell out (hey, that would have served two purposes!). It must have been the nicotine withdrawal...I'm not sure if this was mentioned previously, but Paula has officially banned smoking from all her future shows! What a breath of fresh air! (OK, I'm going to cease and desist from the puns now) Anyway, I'm looking forward to a more polite crowd Sunday in Mass, the birthplace of our favorite hardened criminal (as featured in a prominant professional sound journal). Hey, if they're rude this time, we can always count on Phil to bust some heads. ;-) Looking forward to meeting more Harbingerds.... This time CBS used the intro to "Happy Home" during one of it's sequences. If you all remember, they used "Chiaroscuro" earlier this week, during figure skating I believe. It just goes to show that Paula is becoming more popular by the minute. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo-test@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V3 #62 ******************************
