Would any other Australian Paula Cole fans out there have happened to tape Molly Meldrum's interview with her on The Drum from Channel V this past weekend? I set the vcr to tape it and, of course, it chose to stuff up on me. And I am *not* impressed considering they aren't planning to repeat the show. If anyone can help, pretty please drop me a line! Ohmigosh!! This was my first time seeing Paula perform live, and I wish I could convey how I felt about it with mere words. I cried when she did Happy Home, and laughed when she gave us "the finger" during WHATCG for the line "You go have a beer", and I was jumping up and down for joy inside most of the time. She is so INCREDIBLE!!! It seemed so ironic to hear "I am so Ordinary" come from her mouth. Gee, ordinary should be so good.... Anyway, I can't convey my feelings well (I'm an accountant, not a writer!), but I can tell you about the DC concert. IT WAS TAPED FOR HBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So watch for it--probably many months from now, or maybe they'll get it together early after the grammies-- but watch for it. I can't tell you an exact set list, but I think she did all of This Fire and a good bit from Harbinger (but no Saturn Girl, and she didn't sing that dalmation song--you know-- Chiaroscuro ;^)). I was really hoping to hear Saturn Girl, but I have NO complaints about the show. I believe it was the same set list from her fall 1997 shows, though. She opened with Suwanee Jo-- the room was dark and you could see her silhouette with the clarinet. It was perfect for the mood of the song. When the lights came up some, she was wearing this cool, funky stole with a feathery-type collar over her halter top (which I think was a red or maroon-- for valentine's!--hard to tell exact colors with the lighting though). Suwanee Jo was so intense-- she had the crowd by the ears, for sure. She took off the stole after Suwanee Jo -- her outfit was the halter and black stretchy pants with a glittery, thin belt. Her hair was loose, shiny and gorgeous. Highlights for me included Happy Home, which as I said brought tears to my eyes. During Throwing Stones, they flashed huge blinding lights like silent explosions everytime she screamed LIAR! She did Mississippi right after Throwing Stones, and the crowd was hopping. Her finger cymbals were great during Road to Dead. She banged Jay's bass drum at the end of Hitler's Brother's, and her whistling was perfect! The way she claps her hands at the end Watch the Woman's Hands was like watching a snake before a snake charmer-- she manages to clap while wiggling her arms and hands very erotically. I was in love! Her voice was magnificent-- she sounds strong and happy. So much energy and emotion! She holds nothing back. She had two encores-- the first started with Carmen and then Jolene (I was SO SO HAPPY she did this-- it was magnificent! perfect!), and ended with I Don't Want to Wait. For her second encore, she came out in a slinky black dress, boa-type feather stole and the short wig (which looked pink in the lights which was cool!) and did the french song. Being the french illiterate I am, I can't tell you what it was, but I know others (Kenn??) have described it before, but the important thing was it sounded great and was a really fun ending. Paula didn't talk a lot, but she saif that Happy Home was for her Mom. She said Hush x 3 was written from the pain of a friend's demise. She also said that her performances are for the audiences and not for reviewers and she would like to do a "Neil Young" and not give any interviews, but she'll always want to perform for US. She introduced Bethlehem and Tiger as parts I and II of her life. She gave credit to her band members several times during the show and at the very end, she got them up front in a theatre-type line up and they all hugged one another in a line and bowed together. She is just so sweet. OH! Feelin' Love was SO great!! it was an extended version with a great guitar solo. HOT! SIZZLIN! She preceeded the song by saying you couldn't listen to this song and remain sexually repressed or inhibited (I forget her exact words, but you get the idea). The stage was set up very simply, with a white backdrop with eight women's outfits-- top row was a sixties go-go type mini dress with bell sleeves on the left, a white wedding dress-type in the center, and a fifties big organza-skirt with a beaded? embroidered? cardigan on the right. The second row was a black mini dress with a fuschia keyhole cutout at the breast and fuschia patch pockets and then a one-piece uggie print bathing suit. The bottom row was a sweet-sixteenish type long dress with a velvet waist ribbon and puffy cap sleeves. An incredible kimono was the centerpiece of the bottom row, and the lower right dress was a black mid-length evening dress with sequins/embroidery and handkerchief hem. My husband John (the big Fiona fan) left with a new appreciation of Paula. He liked her music before, but loved the show. As we were walking to the car after the show he commented that it's too bad CDs/tape can't capture Paula with justice. So many artists sound better after the editing/producing process, but that just seems to dilute Paula. Okay, I'll stop soon (you can probably tell I'm writing this to capture memories for myself, but will share it with the list anyway), but I must say a few more things. I met Phil Sullivan (and got his autograph!). He's a super-nice person-- he was very friendly and even gave me a stool to sit on which I appreciated SO much (the venue was a general admission, a no-seats-in-the-place deal). Today my feet and back hurt (I have arthritis), but I can imagine how my body would feel if I didn't have the stool for part of the time. We drove 3 hours to get to the club where Paula was performing, and then three hours back, but it was well worth it! I'd love to do it again. Jen Trynin (sp??) opened, followed by the Devlins. Both were fine-- I liked them, but they ain't no Paula Cole. I'd say a good number came specifically to see Jen, so her performance was well appreciated by the audience. I feel badly for openers who get no respect-- that didn't happen last night. The openers were well received. Paula played from 9:30 to about 11:15. I'll be living off the energy from that for quite a while.... Well sorry this was so long, but as I said, this was my first Paula concert, and I'm just so overwhelmed I had to write it all down. % Connie Groer % % jgroer@mindspring.com % - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 16:30:23 EST From: LeShawnte@aol.com Subject: (harbinger) Re:(and others) In a message dated 98-02-15 02:27:01 EST, you write: << Keep the recommendations flowing. Probably "La Vie En Rose," made famous by the late, great Edith Piaf. Actually, I've never seen Paula do this song in concert, but based Connie's fantastic review, it looks like I'll be getting my chance (at last!) this coming Thursday!! YEA!!! Thanks for the great recap, Connie. I'm so glad you got to see Paula live. Now you've gotten me even more excited about seeing her again than I was already. :^) Peace. Okay, I forgot some stuff. During WHATCG, Paula had a face mask with a pretty plastic woman's face that she used to cover her face during the whispery parts of Cowboys. You know... the "Why don't you get me ready...." etc parts. Maybe a visual representation that song is INTENDED to be sarcastic, even though some find it a Phyllis Shitfly anthem. It was cool. In between her first and second encores while she was changing clothes, there was a really great video projection of fire on the stage walls like the bottom of This Fire's cover. The fire roared away while the audience stamped, yelled and screamed for Paula's return. And last tidbit (for now, maybe), before Bethlehem, while Paula was explaining that the song was about growing up in a small town, she talked about how she wanted to be a cheerleader in school. She broke something in her foot and couldn't cheerlead. That was when she said she had time to sit down and rediscover the piano and found her purpose. She also said she did eventually become a cheerleader and she thought it sucked. Probably a lot of you have heard that before, but I hadn't, and I thought she was really funny when she said that. The audience loved the story. Okay. I'm still floating. % Connie Groer % % jgroer@mindspring.com % - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 19:16:46 PST From: "David Reinwald" Subject: (harbinger) Paula Cole Wants You to Join Her Own Webring!
