Took my daughter to the Sugar Ray show. General admission. Thought we were pretty cool cause we got there early and stood right in front of the stage, in front of a metal grate which kept the crowd seperate from the bouncers. Watched Save Ferris and had enough room, even was able to be a skanking fool. Now, Leahna is eagerly awaiting SR and we are still right up front for the next band. Goldfinger. First thing different about this is that we get doused with beer and godknowswhatelse. Ok-I can handle this. Then the push towards the stage. Now, I'm a little scared cause the crowd is wild and Leahna and my niece are getting smushed up against the metal gate. Then the moshing started. We were kicked, repeatedly, shoved, and getting crushed. So I panicked kinda, and we made our way through the crowd to the side. It was wild. I've been to alot of shows before, as some of you know my son had a punk band for years, but I've always been on the outskirts of the moshing, watching or dancing on the sidelines. THis was wild. I stink of beer. My body is bruised and my right arm is swollen. But Leahna has a keen sense. When SR came on we were in the upper level, watching, and she made her way over to the side just as the singer she likes, Mark, came walking by her. He sang his way to the bar then actually posed for a picture with her and my niece and waited while my flash popped up and said into the mike-She even has her mother with her. Leahna was such a giddy teenager. It was so cool. So I got some good shots and she's happy. And, the funny thing is, I'd do it again, just to see the look on her face. This is actually the first concert we've gone to that she has chosen. It's usually me dragging her to Paula or Sarah. For those not in the know, P-Town, as it is lovingly referred, is a beautiful seaside town on the tip of the Cape. It is a safe place for both gays and non-gays to go to and relax and play, and stroll the streets hand in hand without being harassed. Anyway, the fire was really bad, destroying the Crown & Anchor. THis is an 1880 inn best known for its drag- queen shows. The good in the story is truly good. Local citizens grabbed firehoses and helped carry them down Commercial Street toward the Crown and ANchor. A citizens bucket brigade worked to rescue artwork from galleries on the wharf. Two men climbed the steeple of the 150 year old Universalist MettingHouse and protected it with a garden hose. Truly amazing people. I'm sure they will rally together and there will be many fundraisers and meetings of the mind to bring this community back. BTW-my daughter was conceived there, right in the P-Town inn. I love the place. And it's usually the place young East Coasters first feel comfortable with when they "come out". So, if you're a regular visiter to P-Town, maybe you can give a call and see if there is anything you can do to help. (Quick hint to those who haven't seen this type of chain letter before... young cancer-ridden Tyler doesn't exist (and if he does and does in fact know every word to every Paula Cole song, then where the hell was he when we were all trying to figure out the lyrics to the songs of This Fire???).
