The list gift is back on track. I've decided to present the bouquet of tigerlilies, the seeds & bulbs, Holly Bolt's cool little garden rocks and a nice book I found about retail gardening resources in New York City to Paula at the February 19th show at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. Today is the 7th, so, if you have anything that you'd like to have delivered to Paula at that time, please send it to me soon. I would like to have everything ready to go no later than the end of next week. I'd say everything should arrive by next Saturday, the 14th. The reason I say the 14th is because I am going to be out of the office for the entire following week and, therefore, will not be able to post to the list or to individual subscribers to confirm my receipt of their packages. I know it's short notice, but I don't imagine there are too many others who want to send stuff along anyway. I will try to get a couple photos of Paula accepting the gifts or, at the very least, a shot of her holding the flowers. I'll get that scanned in and ask someone to post it on their website as soon as practicable following the concert. I had hoped to possibly present the gifts to her at the David Letterman show in the hope that she could have the flowers on her piano or something so that everyone would be able to see them, but that isn't really feasible given her schedule on that day and all of the running around she has to do once she's on the Letterman set. Besides, she's probably going to be performing "Me," so I doubt the piano is going to be out there anyway. So, there's the deal. Any questions or comments, please e-mail me privately. Thanks to everyone for their interest in this project. I'm glad we've all been able to do this as a group for Paula. Later! Peace. Regardless, as I noted to someone else about the meaning of black boots, I think they symbolize things like reversing gender roles, rebellion, and as you said, self-confidence, etc. All these things are related. Being the budding historian that I am, I will note that up until the 1950s it was against the law to wear clothing in many cities which were not "gender appropriate." I even ran across a newspaper article in the early 1960s of a young woman whose husband had just been murdered. I was appalled to discover an entire paragraph devoted to criticizing her attire in a photo, b/c she was wearing "a man's jean jacket." That bitch! jk My point is that conventional dress changes over time. I don't hardly even know any women anymore who don't own big clunky boots b/c they have become so commonplace. But they used to be more symbolic in the lesbian community (esp the more "butch" type--not to play into stereotypes or anything) when gender appropriate dress was less androgynous than it is today. I also don't know many young women who don't own a jean jacket. In light of Steven's brilliant translation of BB, I must modify my own. I think the song actually IS about Melanie Griffith. She was afterall in that movie where she went "undercover" and "infiltrated" an Hasidic Jewish community. Paula is exposing Melanie's true sexual orientation, something I have always been suspicious about. Melanie is actually a "Wannabe Hasidic Jew," whose sexual orientation is Victorian. Now one might think that b/c she played a call girl in that uplifting made-for-children movie, that she could not possibly be a Victorian, but you have to consider that she wasn't really convincing in that role. She used that role to mask her true sexual orientation. It's possible she is also a Nazi, or maybe just a Nazi wannabe, since she also infiltrated a Nazi administrator's office in yet another movie. Brilliant work by Steven to have pointed out these subtleties! I never saw the connection with GI Jane, black boots and Melanie Griffith.
