Sharley, At the Portland show, Paula said that "Carmen" was a song about "sisterhood." This is a nice explanation, and seems to fit the lyrics of the song, but "sisterhood" could be taken pretty ambiguously. - -Holly ;) On Fri, 6 Feb 1998, Sharley Hillgardner wrote: > "Dear Gertrude" reminds me of "Carmen" as well Kenn. Pretty close. Paula is quoted in a Cybertalk transcript as saying that she says: "hush, falls a blanket of empathy, on fields of disbelief." Truthfully, I think I like the "apathy" idea even more, though. ;^) Peace. Instead, they actually gave credit to the men who directed the video - Mark Seliger and Fred Woodward. Many of you probably recall that when the IDWTW video was first released, "Seliger-Woodward" appeared in the vid's directorial credits. Then, after the video was hacked to hell and back, their names surreptitiously disappeared and were replaced by the moniker "Alan Smithee" - the John Doe of directorial pseudonyms used when the real guys don't want their names attached to the final product. I had assumed that Seliger and Woodward had pulled their names from the video credits because they were unhappy with the way the video had been re-edited. Certainly, the version that appears on TV now is markedly different (and, in my opinion, less understandable and aesthetically pleasing) than the original. So, on the VH1 special, they showed the same version of IDWTW we always see - the one *without* the images of Paula putting black veils over her dearly departeds faces and *without* the beautiful flapper scene at the end. However, Seliger and Woodward were named as the directors. Not Alan Smithee. I'm wondering why and how this came to be. I mean... IDWTW isn't up for any Grammys. The video hasn't been nominated for anything of which I'm aware. That being the case, I can't help but wonder if these guys - after all the hubbub of Paula's multi-Grammy nominations - rethought the prudence of their decision to pull their names out of the whole deal. Or, did VH1 decide on its own to put their names back on the credit screen? Interesting turn of events, eh? In addition to working on Paula's IDWTW video, Seliger and Woodward are also credited with the video concept of Shawn Colvin's "Sunny Came Home" video and have recently done some kind of work for The Gap (yeah, the retail clothing chain) via their company, Palomar Pictures. The two of them also do a lot of photographic work for Rolling Stone magazine, in addition to photographic works of their own. I think Seliger also does work for People magazine. Peace.
