Of course, all of the following can be documented from interviews. ;) Non Lesbian Interpretations of Paula's songs... "Carmen." Paula used to be a huge "Laverne and Shirley" fan and had a crush on Shirley's TV boyfriend "Carmine...The Big Ragu." Well, since "L&S" has been out of syndication for too long, Paula forgot that his name was Carmine and mistakenly sang "Carmen." This is also a beautiful ode to mechanics...all of the "Car Men" of the world who toil so diligently to keep us on the roads of life. "Black Boots" was originally written for the movie "G.I. Jane." (Paula was slipped a VERY early advance script when it was to star Melanie Griffith as a Hasidic Jew who joins the army...wait, I could be mistaken on that fact. Anyway...) G.I. Jane is feeling sad. Her red high heels just aren't as effective in combat as those good old army issue black boots. This is Paula being very pro-American. The army has used this song in their recruitment films for females for the past two years. Though some would suggest that many lesbians are attracted to the military and uniforms, the "Lipstick Lesbian Brigade" has been campaigning for the abolishion of black boots in the army...which makes this actually an song about a straight woman not wanting to dress like the high fashion uniform lesbians. (An interesting side note is that the title was actually inspired by Paula's inability to find a copy of Prince's bootleg CD entitled "The Black Album" or "The Black Boot." ) "Dear Gertude" is about the ghost of her pet cow who has come back from the grave to convert Paula to vegan-ism. Gertrude the cow was the queen of her herd. (Often referred to as "Herd-y Gerttie.") Like little Clarice Starling in "Silence of the Lambs," Paula was witness to the slaughter of her beloved pet when a bunch of drunken classmates were involved in a cowtipping jaunt that went horribly awry. She to this day is still visibly shaken when she sees the cowtipping scene in HEATHERS. Gertrude the cow was not a lesbian, but the happy mother of two beautiful calves. (Well, as Richard Simmons squeeled about a fat woman's legs, "Honey, those aren't calves, those are STEERS!") Now, my theory is that Paula is a gay man. It is very obvious from her song "Dear John" that she is having sex with a MAN, so she must be a homosexual man, right? (Look how hot under the collar Kenn got in his last post about that song. Is HE the John that Paula slept with in the song? Is that the reason his orangeness is so prominantly displayed in Session 54? Is that why he has been recruited to write the screenplay for Phil's ordeal? We can only speculate.) ;) Now a few quotes if you are still with me... "I think that the world will be a little better when we are no longer shocked by interracial romances and the sexuality of others and more shocked by how much we waste our time when we could be making a change. Teach by example." George LaFayne. ******************** "I slept, and dreamed that life was happiness. I awoke, and saw, that life was service. I served, and found that service was happiness." Tagore ******************' "GRANT ME Let me not pray to be sheltered from dangers but to be fearless in facing them. Let me not beg for the stilling of my pain but for the heart to conquer it. Let me not look for allies in life's battlefield but to my own strength. Let me not crave in anxious fear to be saved but hope for the patience to win my freedom. Grant me that I may not be coward, feeling your mercy in my success alone; but let me find the grasp of your hand in my failure." Actually after I read your comment, I had to pop the CD in my computer and listen to the song again, because I wasn't sure which song it was that caused you to have this reaction! So after listening to it, all the way through, I still have my brain in tact and I actually still enjoyed "The Ladder". (I'm one of those people that can't remember the title of a song, but can tell you the lyrics after hearing 1 note.) So what is it that really sets you off about this song? > but then again i like black boots, it didn't take me long to figure out what > that song was about.. See, and now here's a song that I could take or leave. I remember a lot of friends who wore black boots to "set themselves apart" and what I actually saw in most of them instead of their individuality is this incredible mass apathy. (this is from someone who graduated from the class of 84 the year of apathy...) They don't care about the world around them, and they don't want to. For some reason I usually skip over that song on the CD. That song just makes me think of our twisted sense of what creates our individuality and how we express it. I find BB to be a really miserable "dark" song for me. Now a contrast to that is "Oh John" which immediately follows "BB". That song always cheers me up when I hear it! Brings back a lot of memories for me as someone else on the list said, "People and times and places from my past that I have fond memories of. Not that I want them back in my life..." But, I'll take your word for it, K. Maybe my lesbian friends were just out of the loop (or perhaps it was just their respective compulsive penchants for high-heeled slingbacks). So, as I never had any idea about the whole lesbian/black boots connection, I think I'll just stick to my original reason for not liking the song - - the lyrical and instrumental execution. Thanks for the inside scoop on lesbian culture, though. ;^) I always love learning new things. > Can one really argue that "Carmen" is not about an intense, intimate > relationship with another woman? Nope. I can't. Then again, I can't really argue that it's about a lesbian relationship, either. Fortunately, this song really is up to the experience-based interpretation of the individual listening. What a wonderful thing about Paula's music. Personally, I liked Steven Stewart's "Big Ragu" interpretation. :^) (Regarding "Dear Gertrude")... > Gertrude Stein is also a lesbian icon. Is > the song about her? Who knows. But it's always fun to speculate. Oo..oo.. I know!! As Holly mentioned, Paula has mentioned in past interviews that Gertrude is based on a character from Zora Neale Hurston's =Their Eyes Were Watching God=. That character's name is Janie Crawford. Janie is a woman who has been down a road of pretty hard knocks. Thrice married and once twice widowed, this woman has had to take a good hard look at life and death because it has touched her in both destructive and strenghtening ways. Read this book. It's an amazing work. > who is this mystical ghost of a person coming to, say, Paula in the > middle of the night? Based on several literary criticisms of the book, my own take on why Paula mentions this woman visiting her in the night has to do with an underlying tone of the novel which deals with hoodoo (another form of voodoo). The story is set primarily in the American south (especially Florida) where a large population of Caribbean immigrants have been settled for decades. Janie, while not a stereotypical voodooienne, definitely has been raised in an environment (namely, her grandmother's Christian home) where the tradition of hedge witchery (basically, the idea of modern-day "wise women" who have a talent for working with herbs and scrying the future by signs in the weather or from animals, etc.) had become a way of life. This comes as no surprise that voodoo and Christianity can hold equal importance in the lives of certain people in the American south. Visit New Orleans. Voodoo is alive and well there. Even in the homes of that city's cultural (and reportedly Christian) elite. In a nutshell, I see "Dear Gertrude" as being Paula's song to Janie - a character for whom who Paula apparently felt some affinity and deep affection. The song deals with metaphysical ideas... dream visitations, scrying the future, communicating with the dead and (as in initimated in the final verse) channeling and/or spiritual communion. As I mentioned yesterday, while Paula definitely cares deeply about this character, she is also mystified by these otherworldly characteristics of Janie. Janie even appears to have evoked a maternal feeling in Paula. She wants to help Janie (if you read the book, you'll kinda want to give this poor gal a hug sometimes, too), but she doesn't really know what Janie wants from her. This makes sense, too, because it seems Janie never really knows what she wants for herself, either. Life leads Janie for most of her life, not the other way around. Truthfully, I think that the song is to the "Janie" that Paula senses in herself. A song to that strong black woman inside Paula who understands nature and certain aspects of what is commonly called "the occult." A woman who has seen and felt some pretty powerful things in her life. I think that's the "secret" Paula refers to in "DG." The Devil in Helsinki, Steven, quoth: > It is very obvious from her song "Dear John" that she is having sex > with a MAN, so she must be a homosexual man, right? (Look how hot > under the collar Kenn got in his last post about that song. Is HE the > John that Paula slept with in the song? I will go on the record now. If Paula was a gay man, I'd definitely sleep with her (if given the chance). However, I am not the "John" from the song. > Is that the reason his orangeness is so prominantly displayed in > Session 54? No, that's just me celebrating my Scottish heritage for all the world to see. Just using Paula's performance as a platform. > Is that why he has been recruited to write the screenplay for Phil's > ordeal? We can only speculate.) No. That's just because I'm one (to co-opt one of Paula's terms) BAD-ASS writer... Phil just wants the best man possible on the job. ;^) With all these alternative explanations of Harbinger songs, now I'm wondering if "Dear John" wasn't written to a particular client during a time when Paula was turning tricks to pay the rent... ;^) Peace. Give us a chance to prove you wrong, and we'll promise to take a good hard look in the mirror at ourselves on this one. -Terry >> terry, i didn't mean to judge anyone harshly...that's not me, i didn't mean to make it sound that way, or to anyone else that thinks i was a bit harsh... hol - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Feb 1998 17:41:50 EST From: DWspinTHIS@aol.com Subject: Re: (harbinger) Harbinger In a message dated 98-02-05 08:34:34 EST, you write: << So what is it that really sets you off about this song? >> ladder...i don't know, i just hate that song! the "cliiiimbing" at the beginning is what makes me forward through it, but if i'm too lazy to get up to hit the forward button, and i try to sit through the beginning, then i find that i'm soo annoyed by it. i like the lyrics, but the way it's sung (not insulting paula or anything, i'm not saying the way "SHE" sings it...don't take it the wrong way) annoys me....the background voices annoy me, IT'S ANNOYING!!! i'm listening to it as i type this, and i'm ending the mail right now just so i can turn the song off!! I love the lyrics to hush hush hush-absolutely beautiful -BUT- I can't - dare I say this on Harbinger-I can't stand Peter Gabriels voice. There, I've said it. I feel so relieved. But Paulas voice and the lyrics are stunning on this song. Then obviously you haven't seen him perform as a piece of Celery for Disney at Epcot Center! (I think that is the character he did the vocals for...) He sang "Sledge-Hammer" for an animatronics show. Our 6 year old liked it at the time! Actually I could take or leave Peter's vocals, but he's not why I'm on this list. (Although, he can be considered part of the reason there is this list to be on...) (quiet rumble of everyone yelling... HI DAN!) I was just about to go home for the weekend when something caught my eye... (damn! Did that hurt.) Oh, and I noticed that one of the people at my office has the coolest screensaver on her PC. It is flames that fill the lower 2/3 of the screen, and look a lot like the ones that Paula uses on the backdrop for her concert. It is called "BLAZE". I don't know where she got it, but if anyone want's it I'm sure she would be willing to share. (if it's not copyrighted...) ;-) Iv she vill not schare vit us...I amk a netverk einchaneer, and I have vays of making zees PCs talk...heh heh heh... (BTW, It really isn't that great of a screen saver if you're really trying to save your monitor from burn-in, because it never changes at the very bottom edge where it is always displays almost white, and because it uses the red electron gun heavily... [end of geek talk]) Dan for those of you who noticed...yea, I know... I realized what I typed after I typed it in the geek talk section...I decided to leave it anyway... - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Feb 1998 01:58:07 EST From: MARC3RD@aol.com Subject: Re: (harbinger) This Fire - Dan You have got to stop watching those Hogans Heros Reruns.
