Well, that's a bit exaggerated, but it's true in one point: that talk about other artists. *Some* posts are definitely okay, but they shouldn't make up the bulk of the mail volume. I don't want to moderate out all non-Paula posts, but... > that is fine for a newsgroup Yeah. Right. That's what newsgroups are for. > I'm sorry - hundreds of people get these e-mailed to them every day - > it's really annoying when I get home from school to find 30 messages in > my inbox, and about 25 of them have nothing to do with paula cole. That's the point. People subscribe here to hear about Paula Cole, not about some Natalie Imbugrudadingsda or whoever. Ok, 'Torn' is a nice tune, but okay, that's it. I bet she didn't even write that song herself (if she did, please correct me). And to Jason: > As far as the "some artist you heard on the radio" posts; that's one of > the reasons the list is here--for people to find out not just about > Paula, but about other music. Please, Jason, tell me: 1) Well, there are so many music-related mailing lists and newsgroups out there, why don't you use any of those to post about other artists? 2) Why is this list called 'Harbinger', and not the Big Allround Music Mailing List? Btw, I am looking for good new artists too. People who can really write *lyrics*. I still haven't found any. The 'newest' true lyricist is Mark Knopfler, who debuted in 1978. Nobody who can write lyrics has debuted since then. If you have a new artists who can really write outstanding lyrics and not just song texts, I'd be glad if you'd post his name to the list, but not just any artist 'cause he's new. I do. Other people do. Every other list I'm on allows discussion about other groups. The assumption is that there's a strong chance that peeople that like the subject artist of the list will share tastes in music. > 2) Why is this list called 'Harbinger', and not the Big Allround Music > Mailing > List? Because that's what I called it. Btw, there have been several posts back and forth debating this issue. The unstated assumption has been that this issue is up for debate. It isn't. This list isn't a democracy and isn't ruled by whoever complains the most. It is benign (at at times not benign) dictatorship, and I'm the dictator. People that don't like the format of the list, well, don't let the doorknob hit you in the ass on the way out. Feel free to go and start the anal retentative Paula-information only list. Oh wait, that list already exists, and is called harbinger-news, and has a new moderator to forward info. Oh yeah, that's right. Harbinger-news. It's not like I didn't think of the "Paula only" squares when I moved the list to smoe. A list was set up just for them. First of all, I can't believe I almost let a little headache and dizziness keep me home today. :) At 4:00 I headed to Indy for the Paula Cole/Devlins show at the Murat and made it there in excellent time. There was a bit of a problem with me and the guestlist, however, it all worked out in the end (phew), and I got in the show, camera, extra film, and lens in hand, and found my contact person... I got a nifty VIP pass thing (which later meant that everyone who saw me would ask me where the bathroom was, or where they were selling drinks... :), and was told I could shoot through the entire Devlin set, and Paula's first two songs. The only stipulation was that I had to stand where any audience member would stand, which was kind of a problem. I managed to get right up to the stage, though, and got a few pictures of the Devlins, which you might be seeing later ;), and then I needed to find a way to move to center stage to get pictures of paula... The Devlins KICK arse. They are amazing. Really. I would strongly urge you all to check out their new cd "Waiting". Here's the set list (I know because they all signed the back of it for me ;): "Where are you", "Knew that", "Waiting", "Heaven's Wall", "Surrender", and "Alone." They're from Ireland and are all so cool (read on :), and very good lyricists and musicians. I was super impressed. The first thing they said when they got on stage was, "How many of you think Paula Cole kicks Sarah McLachlan's ass?" and a lot of people cheered. :) Hee hee. So... then... Paula. (sigh) I ended up getting a good spot next to the stage, only there were some really rude people my age... who would not move for me ... Anyway, she came on and did Swanee Jo (I'm tired and I can't spell), and played the clarinet to begin it. Amazing. I got some very cool shots of that. Then she did "Happy Home", which rocked, of course, and I got a few of that, as well, which I think are going to turn out well, cause the background was either black, green, or red, and they just looked *really* cool and they are very close and... cool. :) So, she moved to the piano and did "Throwing Stones" next, and that was harder for me to shoot, because of the people around me, but I managed to get a few of that too... and then, I had used the 36 exp. I brought, and not allowed to take anymore, so I put my camera away and stood there for a bit, watching her go into her next few songs, waiting for the only song I *really* wanted to hear--ME, which she did, and this is how far I was from her: J | P No joke. It ruled. It was a really emotional thing, and so beautifully done... So, I had a message for the Devlins, so I left after that to try to find them... long story short I ended up hanging out backstage in their dressing room with them for the rest of Paula's set, hanging out and talking. They are *so* nice (and I love their accents ;), and it was very cool to just be there... I just kept thinking "this is *so* not my life..." So, I really quietly asked Colin (lead singer guy) if I could meet Paula when she was done, and he said yea. SO, I watched the last 2 songs from the side of the stage! Ohmygod. Wow. She did Jolene last, complete with new outfit and wig. She looked so cute. :) It rocked the house. She came out and smiled at me on the way downstairs... So, I had to wait for a bit until she was done, so I hung w/ the Devlins some more, and then she had to do a bunch of meet and greets, so I didn't, unfortunately get to meet her, but I did drop off my Harbinger jacket, and she signed it. :) Yay. And then on the way home I heard "Me" on the radio, and just blasted it and thought about what an amazing night this was. Anyone remember last year when I was bitching to the list about missing a Paula/Tara show because I was 1 year short of making the age limit for the club? Well, I guess my lesson for this is *patience*, because we all know my Tara stories, and now I've experienced something at a PC concert most wouldn't be able to do... It was just incredible. I couldn't have had a better evening (Well, maybe if I would've met Paula)... Wow. And for some reason now, tonight, this concert, seeing her 2 ft from me, has motivated me even more to finish a couple more new songs in the next month or so and force myself to revise them, and revise them some more so I can record, and hopefully start doing more live stuff... For some reason I have way more faith than I did before... Okay, this is getting so long. Sorry! I'm just really excited. And no, my photos won't be avaible on the web or anything, because I promised several people that they would only be used in our school paper, and for the Devlins site, but, if they are published in the paper, may I can get permission to post the page on my site or something... who know. Tomorrow night: they're at Bogarts in Cinci! Check it out! The Devlins are with her throughout the month, I believe they said. They are great, so check 'em out. :) (and we all know Paula is great :) Jessica Current Obsessions: sleep, sleep, sleep - - This has been a post from the fumbling-towards-ecstasy list. I hear ya, Judy, and I know where you're coming from. I just brought Harbinger and This Fire to work with me a couple weekends ago and listened to them during the day while I was puttering around the office. The songs that I used to almost always skip over back when Harbinger was all I had in my Paula collection were "Our Revenge" and "She Can't Feeling Anything Anymore." That weekend, I learned to have a new appreciation for those songs and, in turn, have had them running through my head now and again in the weeks since. Admittedly, I still don't like "Black Boots." I never have and I truly don't think I ever will. That song has always had the same effect on me as Sarah Mc.'s cover of "'Solsbury Hill" - personally, it's just eternal anathema, all the way. I just don't like the lyrical or instrumental execution of "BB". Having not listened to Harbinger for a while before that weekend recently passed, it was so nice to hear a few of the songs I loved right away, but haven't heard Paula perform during the This Fire tour. "Dear Gertrude" has long been one of my favorite songs from Harbinger. In ways, it reminds me, lyrically, of "Carmen." There's that soft, embracing feeling of friendship and the nurturing protection of a loved one. There's also some sense, in both songs, that Paula never felt that she truly understood Gertrude or Carmen, even though her affections for them were irrefutably deep. "Oh, John," as I've mentioned in the past, is near and dear to me because of memories it brings back of someone I once knew. I grew up in Michigan before moving to the New York City area, so when Paula sings about the New York hotel room, the New England fairground and the truck off the backroads southwest of Chicago, it reminds me of times I spent with that particular person and also of others with whom I've shared memorable moments. Can't say that I'm sad about any of these individuals not being around anymore, but I do think back fondly to certain times we spent together. The lyrics of "Oh, John" are really great, but my favorite part of "OJ" is the bridge. Majorly powerful emotion and some soaring vocals coming from Paula, in addition to brilliant imagery of nature at its finest. I'm an outdoors kinda guy, so that stuff really gets to me. Paula has such a talent for using the bridge to really sell the song. I can see, in certain songs, how she uses the bridge to let her most honest (often painfully heartfelt) emotions burn. Paula's bridges can make me want to cry ("hush" and "IDWTW," for example) or send tingles up my spine ("Me" takes the all-time award for this one). Paula has mentioned in concert that, for her, "Tiger" is sort of like "Bethlehem - Part 2." That's pretty much what I see at work in "Road To Dead." I see "RTD" as "Garden Of Eden - Part 2." "GOE", to me, is the song she would sing to the guy who got away. "RTD" is the song she would have probably ended up singing to the same guy if she *had* managed to win his affections. The guy in "RTD" seems to be someone who couldn't handle Paula and the idea of commiting to someone as strong as her. That song is the one she would sing to the one who ran away. ;^) "The Ladder" is, and always will be, one of my favorite songs - from Harbinger or any of Paula's future albums. Still want to hear that one reworked into something she can sing with a gospel choir backing her. Something about it reminds me of Sundays I used to spend with one of my ex's at an all-black Baptist church back in my hometown. You all know I love the rest of the songs on Harbinger, too (well.. except "BB"...), but it's been so nice to rediscover some of these other songs. I'm still processing "Our Revenge" and "She Can't Feel..." I'm not really sure exactly how they hit me yet. I know I like them, but they haven't sunken in totally. Thanks for bringing up this subject, Judy! I would recommend that everyone give Harbinger another good listen now and then. Having not heard it for a while, it was almost like hearing new stuff from Paula because I'd never really attached myself to some of those songs. Peace. And for Paula they always play "I Don't Want to Wait" and sometimes "Me." >> - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Feb 1998 15:08:32 -0500 From: Phil Sullivan Subject: (harbinger) IMPORTANT NOTICE - CINCI CONCERT !! It's the bridge on the song "I'm so Ordinary" that won me over. I think a good song writer knows how to write a good bridge. At the risk of bringing up a potentially controversial topic (oh, what the hell, Chris Povie can't have all the fun), black boots are highly symbolic objects in the lesbian community. Not that this rules out non-lesbians from liking the song, but I thought I'd point this out. >"Dear Gertrude" has long been one of my favorite songs from Harbinger. >In ways, it reminds me, lyrically, of "Carmen." There's that soft, >embracing feeling of friendship and the nurturing protection of a loved >one. There's also some sense, in both songs, that Paula never felt that >she truly understood Gertrude or Carmen, even though her affections for >them were irrefutably deep. Again, another couple of songs which are highly symbolic to the lesbian community. Can one really argue that "Carmen" is not about an intense, intimate relationship with another woman? (if you can, I'd love to hear your arguments, for the hell of it). Here's my interpretation: "Carmen, I don't know if I can go back, I'll never be the same again" --obviously back to heterosexuality. "Is it biological"-- the old nature/nurture debate "I want to be drunk, I want to be high on you. . ."--hmmm, how many women say this about their female 'friends only' relationships? For "Dear Gertrude," who is this mystical ghost of a person coming to, say, Paula in the middle of the night? Maybe some friend? Perhaps. Nineteenth century writer/lesbian/friend of Ernest Hemingway- Gertrude Stein is also a lesbian icon. Is the song about her? Who knows. But it's always fun to speculate. Notice I have not speculated about Paula's sexual orientation. As I recall, this list buried the topic only days before I joined the list. Darn for me! But I do respect that unless she's out about her sexuality, hetero or bi or whatever, it's not really my business. But I know that she is adored in the lesbian community. I'd be interested to hear other people's responses to my interpretations.
