The main reason its there is for people that just want to receive the news posts from the list. The problem I'm having is that on weekdays I only get to my mail for half hour or so in the morning, and a bit more at night. H/e, that leaves me time to do the adminstrative stuff for the list I run, and to poke through messages that look particularly interesting. I don't really have time to read through all list posts each day. The result is that a lot of stuff isn't reaching the news list on a timely basis b/c I'm not catching posts until the weekend, or just miss some altogether. I had a volunteer to forward news posts that appear on the regular list to the news list, but the little putz walked off the job. ;) So if someone else is interested, please email me. It just involves reading the regular harbinger posts, and forwarding news ones to the harbinger-news address with a little one-line header approving the message. Also, Phil, if you'd like, I can tell you how to post directly to the news list, so that when you give info a copy can go to harbinger and another copy can go right out to harbinger-news. Harbinger, like many other music lists, exists not only to give news and discussion about the artist that's the subject of the list, but also discussion of other related artists--which Tara is--so that fans of Paula can learn about other artists and groups that they might like. For example, any of the original people on this list found out about Paula from the Peter Gabriel and Sarah McLachlan lists. That's why there have been posts of Tara's tour schedule, Sarah McLachlan's, Jen Trynin's, etc. Besides, you're bitching about MY posting? It's my list. Not to be rude, but go away, kid, you're bothering me. ;) Besides, in the welcome message to this list it is clearly stated that there will be posts only tangentially related to Paula, or not related to Paula at all. Doesn't anyone read these days? btw, for anyone wondering what to buy Paula: there are some really well-done Miles davis reissues Sony has put out the past six months or so: Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, Porgy and Bess, Quiet Nights, etc. Paula probably hasn't had a lot of time to get record shopping lately, and would probably like to be given any of them. (fwd) jason and jill wrote: > > JUST A QUICK QUESTION....WHAT DOES TARA MACLEAN HAVE > > TO DO WITH PAULA COLE? > > QUICK ANSWER: > > NOTHING. DEAL. > > Jason Umm... Perhaps I can flesh this out a little bit. Your question, as I understand it, is, "Tara MacLean is not Paula Cole. Why are we talking about her?" I guess a related question that you could ask me is, "who are you to answer this?" Answer: I don't run the list, I dom't make the rules. However, I have been on this list for about 1 1/2 years, I've observed the culture and customs, and I've even posted a few times and managed to avoid bothering anyone enough to get my mailbox flooded with flames. In other words, I'm nobody special, and this is just my $0.02. Feel free to disagree/debate this with me. To answer your question: All of us who joined this list joined it for at least one reason: We appreciate the style of music written and performed by a woman named Paula Cole. Some of have been following her since the days that "Harbinger" (the album for which the list is named) was a new release. Others joined after the release of "This Fire," still others after the radio airplay of "WHATCG" and "IDWTW," and even more after Paula's amazing and well-deserved 7 Grammy nominations. Unlike other lists, this one has done a good job of avoiding the "I have been listening to xxxxxxx since..." elitism too often seen among the fans of recently popular musicians. We are a classless society. If you are a fan of Paula, welcome. Feel free to share your experiences, insights, interpretations, or whatever with us. For those who just like to sit back and observe, that's wonderful too. Enjoy. In all the time I've been on this list, I have yet to see one person post that they listen to Paula Cole only (Christopher Povie, keep that grubby little finger away from that reply button!). The fact is that there are other musicians doing a style of music similar to Paula's. Like Paula, they are unique artists with unique styles (I said similar, not identical), and therefore not everyone here will like them. Nonetheless, one of the most valuable things I have gained from this list is the introduction to artists such as Alisha's Attic, Tara McLean, and Jen Trynin, whose musical styles are very compatible with my personal taste. Many other list members feel the same way. I guess what I'm saying is that, as a group, we take a pretty broad interpretation of what topics are related to Paula Cole. In the past, this has included discussion of the Lilith Fair, various Lilth Fair artists (including Fiona Apple, Alisha's Attic, Tara McLean, Sarah McLachlan and others), artists who Paula has opened for or performed with (Peter Gabriel, Melissa Etheridge, Sarah McLachlan, ...) or who have opened for Paula (Jen Trynin, Tara MacLean, ...), discussion of how we thought music video affected our personal feelings about songs. In addition, many of us consider others on the list to be friends or close acquaintances, and will share certain personal experiences with the list. This is probably the only case where the longer you are on the list, the more you can get away with. Topics that have been found to be unacceptable include excessive "Tori: Love her or hate her?" debates, discussions of what web browser/ISP/search engine is best, and so forth. In general, if you are new to a list, it is best to "feel the list out" for long enough to get an understanding of what is considered acceptable and what is not. I usually reccommend a minimum of a week. If you are new to newsgroups and mailing lists in general (as I gather you are), a little longer is probably safer. If you have a lot of experience with those media, you may be able to get away with slightly less. Personally, I have been using newsgroups and lists since 1992 and I will only very rarely post in my first 5 days on a list or group. If I do, I make darn sure it's right on topic. What's more, I won't question whether someone else is on topic or "following the rules" for at least 6 months to a year, depending on the age of the group. As a final, rather minor point: The reason I gathered that you are new to newsgroups/lists is that you posted your message in ALL CAPS. On the internet, writing text in all caps is the equivalent of shouting. In many cases, that can be considered rude. On this list, we are not going to hold something against you that you didn't know, but you may want to be aware of this for future posts. Again let me emphasize that this is only intended to answer your question. The thought that we should stay on topic is a good one. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say that we look forward to your future contributions. -Terry - -- Suppose I was dreaming, not about you, but for you; on your behalf. The twitching definitely got to me, too. Seeing a singer put emotion into a performance makes the song feel more intimate, but Jewel seemed was writhing with so much drama that it was distracting. When she talked with Jay, she did say that music had become redundant for her, so maybe she was risking a new interpretation of the song to try to make it interesting for her to sing. Who knows... it was a bit much, though. I thought she was brilliant on SNL a bunch of months back. I just got a call from my friend, Anthony Hesseltine (formerly of these environs), who made the big trip from Seattle to Culver City, CA to see Sarah McLachlan's recording session for her upcoming VH-1 Storytellers appearance. He gave me the whole lowdown on Sarah's contribution to that show (check out the Fumbling list for further details on Sarah), but my main concern was how Paula fit into the picture. According to Anthony, Paula contributed vocals to Sarah's "Elsewhere." In the past, it is my understanding that Paula has usually provided backup vocals for Sarah when they have performed this song together, like at Lilith Fair. In this show, Paula provides backup vocals through the first portion of the song, but comes in and sings solo on "oh, the quiet child awaits the day when she can break free... the mold that clings like desperation... Mother, can't you see I've got to live my life the way I feel is right for me... might not be right for you, but it's right for me." Having never heard Paula and Sarah sing together, I'm very much looking forward to hearing how this plays out. Anthony said it was brilliant. Additionally, after Sarah's set, VH1 taped Paula performing "IDWTW" live. I can only surmise that they intend to create a video out of this footage or, perhaps, that they plan to use it for some programming related to their Grammy coverage. Keep an eye out for it. After the show, the staff at the recording informed the audience that this episode of Storytellers will be airing in four weeks. That's all they said. What a >great album! Kenn, I don't live on the East Coast so I can't make it to the Jen Trynin concert, but I just wanted to second your motion on Gun Shy as my best discovery of 1997. She still isn't getting very much air play, and I wonder if her marketing team is doing anything different than Paula's did, or what. After all, they were up for the Boston Globe's best new artist of the year a couple of years ago, and if I'm not mistaken, I think Jen even won the award. More people should be exposed to her music, b/c I know they would love her work. Too bad they aren't getting to hear her. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 23:19:32 -0500 From: "bmitchh" Subject: Re: (harbinger) Tara MacLean tour dates added on the west coast...
