On February 10, MCA Records will release the 1998 edition featuring a host of this year's Grammy nominated artists and songs, 11 tracks in all, in the categories of Record Of The Year, Best New Artist, and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Artists and tracks representing the Best New Artist category on the "Grammy Nominees CD" are: Fiona Apple, "Criminal;" Erykah Badu, "On & On;" Paula Cole, "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?;" and Hanson, "MMMBop." Record Of The Year nominees included on the CD are: Shawn Colvin, "Sunny Came Home;" Sheryl Crow, "Everyday Is A Winding Road;" R. Kelly, "I Believe I Can Fly;" and Hanson and Cole's "MMMBop" and "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?," respectively. "We are honored to join NARAS to release this year's Grammy Nominees CD," says Jay Boberg, President of MCA Records. "In addition to bringing great music to fans around the world, sales from the CD will benefit music education in our schools, and that makes us very proud to be involved with this project." Adds Michael Greene, President and CEO of NARAS, "We are happy to have the opportunity again this year to enhance the public's awareness of the music in these top Grammy categories. Proceeds from this LP will enable the NARAS Foundation to expand efforts to provide music education to thousands of America's students and pave the way for additional CD releases in the future." Since 1995, the annual Grammy Nominees CD has helped raise both awareness and funds to develop the NARAS Foundation, which reaches schoolchildren, musicians and educators around the country. The first compilation album in 1995 was certified Gold within six months of release; the second, Platinum, and last year's collection was certified Multi-Platinum. This remarkable success has provided funding for such programs as the National GRAMMY Concert Series for Children; the GRAMMY High School Jazz Ensembles; GRAMMY in the Schools, and most recently, the GRAMMY Signature Schools, a unique award for outstanding High School music programs. The Universal Music Group encompasses MCA Records, MCA Records Nashville, GRP Recording Company, Geffen Records, Universal Records, Rising Tide, Interscope Records, Hip-O Records, Universal Music & Video Distribution, Universal Music International, MCA Music Publishing and Universal Concerts. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Jan 1998 12:35:11 -0500 From: "Kenn" Subject: Re: (harbinger) Re: TV Spot!!!!!!! and Dawson's Creek -Reply Don wrote: > In my area (Albany, NY) Paula's "Sessions" was repeated last night. > Yes, I have it on tape but I watched it because it was "semi-live". :) Is > that Kenn in the orange shirt? The CD is taken from the soundboard recording of Paula's performance for Hard Rock Live (the CD also includes four songs from The Verve Pipe's performance at HRL and a bunch of commercial cues). I have to say that now this probably my favorite CD and I can't say enough about how awesome (!!!) the performance is. I didn't think I was probably going to hear a live CD of Paula's music that would top the "hush" bootleg, but I have been proven mistaken. The Hard Rock Live show was recorded during the time when Paula's band consisted of Jay, Eric Schlemerhorn and Mike Rivard. That combination in cooperation with Paula was so totally kick-ass!! I mean no offense to Kevin and Mark because they do a great job, too, but Eric and Mike produced a sound very much unlike what I've heard from Kevin and Mark in live performances. Eric is a majorly incredible guitarist and the funky sound he got out of his guitar on songs like "Mississippi" and especially "Throwing Stones" is awe-inspiring. The sound quality is also exceptional. There is none of the radio hiss that is present on the "hush" boot. It's really just utter perfection. The track listing is (I'm not totally sure if this is the order): Throwing Stones Road To Dead Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? Me I Don't Want To Wait Hitler's Brothers Mississippi At long last, I have a recording of Paula doing "Road To Dead" with those groovy little finger-cymbals of hers!! I'm a very happy guy. :^) Those of you who have seen Paula's Hard Rock Live performance already know how the performances of "Cowboys," "IDWTW" and "Hitler's Brothers" sound. That particular rendition of "HB" is my all-time favorite. Paula and the band quite simply TORE UP on that song!! The other songs are the ones that didn't make the cut to television (even though I would have preferred to see those over Lou Reed's offerings). A few words of caution about this CD.... From what I have heard from a couple of other people since purchasing this CD, I got it as a great bargain. I only paid $20 for it, but it's been sold elsewhere for as much as $75 !! I have a really good relationship with the guy I bought my copy from and he gave it to me wholesale. I would suggest doing some looking around before sealing the deal on a copy that has a higher price tag. Not that it isn't totally worth $75.. I would just imagine that it is probably available elsewhere for less. The CD doesn't really have a title. It just reads: "Hard Rock Live: Paula Cole and The Verve Pipe." My copy came in a paper sleeve and included a separate cue sheet that listed the songs and all of the commercial cues. There is no source code, which would be pretty useful in ordering. One other note... I regret that I am not able to make copies for people on the list right now. I am in the process of getting a new place and making the arrangements to move. I am also working very hard on my Paula Cole website, which is scheduled to be unveiled at the beginning of April. As such, I just can't assume the undertaking of handling a tape distribution right now. Perhaps someone else out there will (or already has) purchased this CD and will be able to churn out copies. I hope so, anyway. So, there's the deal. Look around at the used CD stores. There are CD copies of this thing floating around; it'll just take some hunting. Good luck! Peace. In the latest Rolling Stone (South Park on the cover!) there's a little blurb about Paula in the "On the Road" section (p.30). I just thought I'd share it since it's actually amusing: "Despite her several dozen Grammy nominations, there's still time to catch Paula Cole in a relatively intimate setting. Expect a show that ranges from solo piano ballads to full-band rave-ups. Cole spent her holidays playing for the troops in the Persian Gulf; in March she heads to Japan and Australia before finishing out '98 with more American dates in bigger venues." Then they list the dates from Feb. 9 to Feb. 23. Anyway, I'm really excited to see Paula on Feb. 13 in Williamsport, PA. I swear, I must have missed that date if it was ever posted here, but that wouldn't surprise me - I mean, Williamsport? Imagine my surprise when there was a big old picture of Paula's face in the Penn State newspaper advertising her Williamsport show! That's only an hour from here, and that's better than I could ever hope for living in the godforsaken middle of nowhere. So I called for tix, and ended up with row M, if toward the side. How big can the Williamsport Performing Arts Center be, anyway? ;-) So, if anyone (Pittsburgh refugees?) is going to this show, let me know and maybe we can meet up before or after.
