I saw the TV spot; in fact, I saw it several times. It's because of her Grammy nominations that WB is finally promoting her. I hope now that WEA International will also do the right thing and promote her in other countries. As you know PC is virtually unknown outside North America and she needs to crack the Japanese market (the second biggest market after the U.S.) and the EC market (not just Britain and Germany ) and of course the down under (Ozzi, Kiwi) Now, I really have a mixed feeling about "Dawson's Creek" On the one hand it's good that her music is getting an extra exposure but on the other hand I don't want her song to be associated with a perticular TV show no matter how good that show is. Her songs should only be associated with PC, nothing else. Now, you might think I'm paranoid but remember the song "At This Moment". Well, everytime people hear this song they think of "Family Ties" with Michael J. Fox and his girl friend. I don't want people to hear the song and say "Oh, it's the Dawson's Creek song" Remember what John Mellencamp said, "John Lennon didn't write Revolution for Nike" Thank you for reading my babble (if you ever did read it) A.M. It was given out free. It has a blue background with Paula sitting on a stool bare footed. She is wearing, I think not sure, a blue shirt and a black pants. On top there is a writing in red which reads "Paula Cole This Fire" Is this the poster? A.M. P.S. About the analysis of "Me" I would add right now that it is reflected (with other songs) in the T-shirt. I gotta agree with you here, I can't listen to the oldies stations anymore without hearing a song they've used in a commercial or show. Recycling is one thing but jeez! Can't they write a new song or something? Oh, and I never did read your babble, A.M. ;) In my area (Albany, NY) Paula's "Sessions" was repeated last night. Yes, I have it on tape but I watched it because it was "semi-live". :) Is that Kenn in the orange shirt? I seem to recall hearing that before. PC: (laughs) SC: OK... when touring, how do you keep your voice in such good shape, = so that you can...? PC: Yeah, that=A2s tough. It=A2s so tough because your voice is your = body. And the larynx is such delicate little pinky.. pinky fleshy thing. = I don=A2t smoke and I don=A2t drink and I try to sleep as much as = possible. I drink a lot of water. I take vitamins. I take echinacea and = goldenseal whenever I feel anything starting to come on. I warm up. And = if I don=A2t do these things, my voice starts to go. If I don=A2t do = these things, then my health starts to go and then twenty people around me = are suddenly unemployed. So, there=A2s a lot of pressure. I have to keep = my voice in tip-top shape. SC: Excellent. Could you say thank you to Wolfgang from Austria for = tuning in? That was his question. PC: Oh, thanks, Wolfgang. (laughs) SC: Alright, excellent. PC: Do they see me or is it just...? SC: They see you. PC: Oh. SC: They see you and hear you, as well there=A2s a typist typing... PC: OK. SC: your answers to the questions and the questions that I=A2m = speaking to you into your ear. PC: OK. SC: So, if you can just say... like this... this question from Billy = from Chicago. Here comes one from Billy from Chicago. What album or = artists have changed your life? Your largest inspirations. PC: OK, Billy from Chicago... What artists or albums have influenced = my life? Quite a few, although it took me quite a while to finally go out = into the world and hear more music than just what my family was making at = home. I grew up not listening to radio or records. I=A2d say Hounds Of = Love by Kate Bush was hugely influential to me. It made me want to start = writing. It made me feel that I could be as bizarre and audacious as I = wanted to be. I felt Kate Bush=A2s production is visionary. I loved = Ricki Lee Jones=A2 Pirates album. It was very dark and brooding and the = songs are more like watercolor paintings than they are little pop ditties. = That I was listening to mostly my junior or senior year of high school = and I became more passionate about playing the piano and writing songs. = Peter Gabriel=A2s solo albums and then I got lost into the world of jazz - = and probably still am - for many years so... Miles Davis. Really = anything by Miles was and still is such a huge influence and huge = inspiration to me. He was always changing. He was never repeating = himself. He was very loyal to his band. He was a sharp dresser (laughs) = and just completely bad-ass all around, so... I love Miles. I definitely = worshipped at the altar of Miles. And, Billie Holliday. I love Stevie = Wonder=A2s Songs In The Key Of Life. I love Al Green=A2s Still In Love = With You. I love anything by Bob Marley. I=A2m a huge Bob Marley fan. I = love that he=A2s loyal to his band and they=A2ve cultivated a sound = that=A2s influenced so much music, like hip-hop. And, I love that he was = a social thinker and was trying to improve the state of the world in his = lifetime. I could on and on about this question because I love music so = much. I love Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I love his Shabazz album. Annie = Lennox definitely influenced me early on. I loved her voice, but she was = influenced so much by Aretha. And then I found the fountain source - I = found Aretha. (laughs) SC: Excellent. Alright, let=A2s move on to the next question from = Lisa, posted on the Internet right now. She=A2s wondering, where do you = see yourself and your music ten years from now? And, have you ever = thought about acting? PC: Lisa... OK.. where do I see myself ten years from now. I=A2m 29 = right now, going on 30. So, I=A2d be 39 going on 40... (laughs) Well, = I=A2d love to have certainly a few albums under my belt by then and I hope = soon I don=A2t have to tour so long to support each album - that it could = be more condensed. Fingers crossed. (laughs) I do want to continue = touring throughout my life. I want to be a bit of a Tina Turner. I want = to keep working it. And, I love performing live, but I don=A2t want to be = out so long so that I can creatively move on to the next body of work. = For example, now I=A2m ready to move on to the next album, but I can=A2t = because I have yet more touring to do. I=A2ll be touring until the fall. = So, probably the next album won=A2t come until =A199. In ten years... = several albums under my belt and, hopefully, each of those albums will be = honest representations of my journey in this life. And, I=A2d love to = have a family by then, too. I don=A2t want to wait too long. I want to = make some babies (laughs) and retreat a bit - become a little bit more of = a hermit in my country life. SC: Excellent. Here comes a question from Isabel from France. Do you = have a method to your songwriting? Do you write lyrics first or music = first? How does it work? PC: Isabel from France... How do I... Is there a method to my = songwriting? I find that music is always easiest. Lyrics are hard.. much = more difficult for me. I labor over the lyrics sometimes. And it=A2s = always different. Sometimes the songs begin as journal entries, strictly = as prose in my in my journal and it seems like it=A2s something important. = So, I set music to that journal entry. That=A2s usually the easiest way. = But then sometimes, for example, now I have about four songs that need = words. (laughs) Music is always easier...that happens sometimes. And = then sometimes it=A2s really like a bolt of lightning. Songs, like = Mississippi, came to me like a bolt of lightning and it was like I was a = crow flying above and I saw the song perfectly. It happens differently. SC: Excellent, excellent. Now here=A2s a question from Yung from = Singapore. He=A2s wondering...He=A2s a songwriter himself, but your = quality is so natural. Do you have any advice for any beginner singer/song= writers out there that might be able to someday be able to be nominated = for seven Grammys? PC: (laughs) OK... Yung in Singapore... Do I have any advice? = (laughs) Well, the advice that I would give... the thing that helped me = was... first of all, to learn enough about music where you can be = articulate in the language of music and, therefore, voice what you want to = musicians, to producers, to people working with you so you won=A2t be = taken advantage of - so that your visual goes straight to tape. So learn = about music so that you can say, *I don=A2t like that chord that you=A2re = playing. Could you please take out the nine and just make it a major = triad?* Like that, for example. Secondly, I recommend teaching yourself = about the recording process - learning a little bit about equipment, so = that you can be more hands-on in the studio and, therefore again, bring = your vision straight to tape. And third, to learn as much as you can = about the music business, which is so complex, so labyrinthian, and = therefore, so many artists are taken advantage of . If you can learn = about these three things, I think you=A2ll be much more armed for the = difficult journey through the music business. Because really it=A2s most = exciting when the most unique point of view is put to tape, instead of it = becoming homogenized and your songs sounding like everybody else=A2s = songs. Be as unique as possible. SC: Excellent. Now a question from Joel in San Francisco. Who = inspired you in the making of Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? PC: Joel in San Francisco... What inspired me.. Who inspired me for = Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? I=A2ve told this story before so maybe = some of you know, but I was listening to XTC, the English group. This was = seven years ago.. I was living in San Francisco and I was holed up in my = apartment, writing songs. I really appreciated their cleverness.. their = use of sarcasm and wit and I thought *I don=A2t write like that.* = (laughs) I write in a very confessional, diary-like, emotional way and I = wanted to try my hand at wit and sarcasm. And, I also thought, *Gee... a = lot of women don=A2t really write in that way either. It=A2d be refreshing= to have a song that was from a woman=A2s point of view, but with some = sarcasm, some levity, some edge. And Where Have All The Cowboys Gone? = just kinda flowed out of my pen the next day. The music came later. = (laughs) That=A2s always the easy part. SC: OK, excellent. Here=A2s a question from Rosa from New Jersey. = She=A2s wondering.. she knows you grew up in a small town. She=A2s = wondering if you had wished that you had grown up in a big city. Do you = think you could have gotten more out of your childhood being in a large = city than being in a small town? PC: Hmm. That=A2s a nice question, Rosa from New Jersey. Could I .. = Did I ever wish to be in a larger place than Rockport, Massachusetts? = Definitely=21 (laughs) But, you know... ultimately, I feel everything is = meant to be. I think that I was meant to be born into the family I was = born into and I was meant to be frustrated (laughs) in a little Yankee = village with just white people (laughs). I mean, when I finally got out = of that small situation...and, it=A2s a dry town... you can=A2t buy or = sell alcohol, and that=A2s just one symbol of its lingering puritan = ethics. Once I left and I went to college.. I went to a college where = there was so many different cultures and races and colors and ages of = people. I was so relieved. I was so relieved not to be at some university= that was just like another big high school. I was so relieved to have = other cultures around me and I joined the gospel choir. I was one of the = only white people there. I immediately identified with black folks and = black music and have every since. It=A2s just something I feel in my soul = and sure, of course, at times I wished I could have been in city, but I am = who I am and probably wouldn=A2t have been as driven if I weren=A2t as = frustrated as I am. And, besides, Rockport had beautiful nature that I = could lose myself in. It was a beautiful place to grow up. SC: Excellent. Here comes a question from Candice. Not sure where = she=A2s from, but she says she really loved Where Have All The Cowboys = Gone? but she was not sure what you wanted from that song. Is it a return = of a kind of macho masculinity? What is that? PC: (laughs) Well, somebody is asking about Cowboys and... well, = Candice... see, I think it=A2s good everybody kinda finds their own = interpretation and I think it=A2s good what you get out of it. I intended = it to be sarcastic - to be kind of a jab at the sexism in our society. = Just growing as a woman.. that song is a product of me being a woman in = this society. You=A2d see the Marlboro man on the billboard. And you=A2d = see the Tide commercials on daytime television aimed at the average = housewife. Seeing these socialized roles of who we=A2re supposed to be = and, in reality, we=A2re so much more than that - men and women. So that = song is just a little bit of .. a little bit of everything. (laughs) SC: OK, excellent. Here=A2s a question from Jan from Scotland. We = have about four more minutes to go. She=A2s wondering...do you consider = yourself a folk/pop artist? What type of artist do you consider yourself? PC: Oh, let=A2s move on. SC: OK. Alright. Here=A2s another question from Candice. When is = your next concert in New York? PC: Next concert in New York is April 23rd. I believe it=A2s at the = Beacon. SC: OK, excellent. Here=A2s Bridget from Frankfurt, Germany. Do you = ever plan to visit Germany? PC: Yes, Bridget from Frankfurt, Germany (laughs)... I do plan on = visiting Germany. I mean, I=A2ve been and I will be back. Possibly as = soon as March. SC: OK, excellent. Here=A2s Lola from San Juan. She loves your = music. You have a special way of singing about life, about yourself. = She=A2s wondering how you=A2re able to channel that into your music. How = do you channel your everyday life into your music? Or do you? PC: Gosh.. It=A2s such a big question... This is from Lola from San = Juan - is that what you said? SC: Yes. PC: It=A2s a big question. How do I channel... what is it again? SC: She loves your music and she feels that your songs really tell = about life. So she=A2s wondering how you=A2re able to channel that energy = - - how you can touch her life... express life into your music. PC: I think compassion is a needed ingredient in every artist because = when one is compassionate, you=A2re able to go inside another person=A2s = skin and, perhaps, feel what they=A2re feeling. And, therefore, you=A2re = not only writing your own experiences, you=A2re writing experiences of = other people. SC: Here=A2s the last question for you. It=A2s Mary from Italy. = You=A2re nominated for so many Grammy awards. How do you feel about this = recognition? PC: Mary from Italy... I felt completely shocked when it happened and = so acknowledged because I=A2ve been doing this many years now and there = are some other artists (especially female artists) that have gotten a lot = more press than me and a lot more record sales than me. And I was just = naturally expecting them to get the Grammy nominations, not me. I was = shocked and yet I feel so acknowledged. I feel like I=A2ve already won = and I don=A2t need to win the Grammys because this alone is so much and... = I always get nervous at those damned awards shows anyway. (laughs) I = don=A2t want to be competitive with my fellow artists. I feel the = nomination is quite enough and it=A2s very beautiful. SC: Excellent. Alright, we are through with the internet chat. = Actually.. alright, one last quick question from Lisa on the internet. = What is the one thing you want to leave your listener feeling? Is there = any one thing, or...?
