It's not good to disappoint a sick person who woke up at midnight sunday just to watch it like that. At least she was first and I didn't have to sit and wait (probably would have fallen asleep). In reality, we aren't too cuddly around here (at least most of us aren't), but we are pretty damned tolerant of others, especially new folks (even if we do enjoy throwing rotten tomatoes (or the occasional stone) at things we find annoyingly amusing). It's all done in the best spirit possible and no true harm is ever intended. As far as a gift goes, I don't believe we've ever given Paula a list gift for her birthday. Personally, I've found that that kind of undertaking is one I will avoid heading up, but to which I am more than happy to contribute. A couple of months ago, I brought up the notion of presenting Paula with a list gift at her show at the Beacon Theatre. Sadly, that show was postponed due to illness. I still plan to present Paula with the gifts that were discussed at that time (including Holly Bolts rocks), however, I believe I am going to do that at Paula's New Haven show (at Toad's Place) or possibly at the Rutgers show, both of which take place next month. I will be posting about that issue in the coming week. So, that's where the gift thing stands as of today. Peace. As I'm sure is true for most of us, I had never heard of Paula's contribution to this particular CD and was thrilled to find out about it. I bought the CD over the weekend and am very pleased with the purchase. Paula is featured on only one of the CD's tracks, but the rest of the disc is very good all on its own. If you are fond of the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Youssou N'Dour or other similar world music artists, then you will definitely not mind spending a few bucks on the _...Layla_ CD. Most of the tracks on the disc specifically put me in the mind of the music of Dead Can Dance. The instrumental arrangements remind me of the DCD songs that borrow from Middle Eastern and African sources (if you know of DCD's _Spiritchaser_ album, then you have a pretty good grasp on _...Layla_'s sound) and the vocal arrangements sound a lot like the wonderful stuff that comes from the mouths of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard. I've been a long-time fan of DCD (and other artists who have sung on 4AD albums, like This Mortal Coil and The Cocteau Twins), so this CD is a welcome addition to my collection. Paula's voice appears on the 4th track of _...Layla_, which is entitled "Ammeh Kimia" (if anyone has any idea what this means, I'd sure like to know....). The sound of this song is unlike most of the rest of the music on the CD. Instead of bearing a similarity to DCD's Middle Eastern/African sound, "Ammeh Kimia" reminds me more of other artists. Instrumentally speaking, the song reminds me of some of work done by Deep Forest and Cirque du Soleil. Vocally, Paula's contribution sounds a great deal like Enya's kind of singing. That's not to say that Paula sounds like Enya; she doesn't. It's just that the style of her vocalizations sounds like some of Enya's work. Unlike Paula's work on David Byrne's "Miss America," one can actually hear Paula singing on "Ammeh Kimia." I know I was pretty disappointed to hear Paula's voice drowning under the music in "Miss America" (although the song itself is fantastic). So, if you felt the same way, don't sweat it with "Ammeh Kimia." You can really hear Paula singing and it definitely sounds like our girl. Granted, she's not belting it out like she's singing "Mississippi" or anything, but it is Paula. The mood of the sound is lighthearted and joyful. Paula's vocals border on gospel, but I would probably best describe them as spiritual. Remember how she sounded at the end of the _Secret World_ version of "In Your Eyes"? It's pretty close to that. If you'd like to check out a couple of the tracks from _A Prayer For The Soul Of Layla_, you can do so by accessing: http://www.alula.com/jam.html Sorry to say that "Ammeh Kimia" isn't one of the tracks set up for sound sampling, but you can hear the first track from the album, "Tariqat," and the title track, as well. This page also shows an image of the CD's cover, which will be a great help to any of you who will go in search of this album. I spent an hour at HMV's midtown Manhattan store yesterday just trying to hunt this damned thing down. That store is notoriously known for employing some of the least helpful customer assistance clerks in retail, so I was pretty much left on my own because the sales clerk had no intention of pitching in. Even though the clerk claimed that there were 3 copies of _...Layla_ in stock, I never found even one of them. Ultimately, I ended up trekking up to the Virgin Megastore, instead, and found the last copy they had in stock. Ah.. the lengths some of us will go to.... ;^) Anyway, I just thought I'd give you all a short review of the CD before you go out to buy it. My recommendation is that you buy the CD if you're a die-hard collector of Paula's music, but do so knowing that Paula appears rather briefly halfway through and at the end of only one track. Personally, I feel that the rest of the CD makes the purchase worthwhile, but I'm an occasional fan of some types of world music. Contrarily, if that kind of stuff puts you up the wall, then maybe you should just ask someone to make a taped copy for you first. Hope this helps you out. Thanks again for the information, Atsushi !! Peace. OK.. well, I'm not really answering my own question, but I did just find out what the title "Ammeh Kimia" means. A co-worker of mine is of Persian descent and, according to her, Ammeh Kimia is Persian. In Farsi, it means, simply, Aunt Kimia. More specifically, Kimia (which is just a given name) is apparently someone's paternal aunt. My colleague said that Farsi is very specific about relative names. So, there you go... I have no idea why the song is named after someone's (perhaps Jamshied Sharifi's?) Aunt Kimia, but at least I know what the title means now. :^) Peace. Duh. In farsi, the alphabet is different...thus, translated spellings are pretty much choose-your-phonetic. eg, Qur'an, Koran. Double duh, this has nothing to do with Paula Cole. Except, you know that if we are to stay alive, and see the peace in every eye, Clinton and Khatami need to kiss and make up.
