This is from today's Boston Globe. Gracious Cole takes BMA act of year By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 01/16/98 The first concert Paula Cole ever attended was at the Orpheum Theatre, when she was an eighth-grader eager to see the new wave band Devo. The grown-up Cole, a Rockport native, came back in heightened splendor last night, capping a truly phenomenal year by winning four trophies at the Kahlua Boston Music Awards, including act of the year - beating out Aerosmith, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Morphine, and New Edition. "I want to thank my folks, who have always been behind me," said the modest Cole after winning another award for single of the year for "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone." And then she impressed the near-capacity, scenester-packed Orpheum crowd by praising several teachers in her life, namely Beth Goldberg from Gloucester (who schooled her on piano and voice), and two Berklee College of Music teachers, Bob Stoloff and Steve Prosser. Upon winning act of the year, Cole again deflected the spotlight from herself, this time to production manager Phil Sullivan and percussionist Jay Bellerose. It was a classy display by Cole, who had been at the Orpheum three years ago for another Boston Music Awards ceremony in which she lost the rising star trophy to Jen Trynin, who has since become a close friend and opened a series of shows for Cole this fall. And to top off Cole's triumphs last night, she performed two songs ("I'm So Ordinary" and the hit "I Don't Want to Wait") that mesmerized the crowd. Also enjoying a huge night was the Amazing Royal Crowns, a hyper-juiced rockabilly band that took home rising star, debut album (indie label), video (indie label), and outstanding club band, a richly deserved award. "We're just about old-fashioned showmanship," said singer Jason Kendall. Another multiple winner was the Mighty Mighty Bosstones (who won album of the year for "Let's Face It"), while Aerosmith copped outstanding rock band and Aerosmith front-man Steven Tyler scored outstanding male vocalist. Neither Aerosmith nor the Bosstones attended, for both had prior concert commitments. Frankly, it was hard to argue with most winners of last night's 38 awards. Buzz bands Guster, Rubyhorse, and Orbit all won. So did the respected Merrie Amsterburg, Laurie Geltman, Ronnie Earl, Ellis Paul, and Walter Beasley. Emcee comedian Kenny Rogerson kept things rolling crisply - and though the performances were skewed too much to rock (versus past years when there was more balance), there were still great songs by Orbit, Rubyhorse, and the underrated Catie Curtis. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 11:17:03 -0600 From: "Dan Hoyer" Subject: (harbinger) Another Phil article from the Globe... You can get the original of this article from: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe/globehtml/015/Cole_manager_calls_ordeal__unbeliev.htm Cole manager calls ordeal 'unbelievable' By Zachary R. Dowdy and Stephanie Ebbert, Globe Staff, 01/15/98 Phillip Sullivan spent Christmas locked up in jail cell with a bare concrete slab bed and a dirty pillow for a crime he didn't commit. But at a news conference yesterday, where he flashed a ''Get out of Jail'' card from a Monopoly game, Sullivan showed he hasn't lost his sense of humor. ''I can't stay mad forever,'' said a smiling Sullivan, 40, of Newton, sound engineer and production manager for singer Paula Cole. Still, there was no good explanation for Sullivan's Kafkaesque tale. Police in Boone County, Ky., where attempted rape charges were filed that led to Sullivan's arrest in Boston as a fugitive Dec. 24, said yesterday a Florence, Ky., woman had fabricated the allegations against Sullivan. They did not know why she did it. ''It's a strange, strange case,'' Boone County Police Chief Edward Ammann said yesterday. The woman's attorney said the case was a misunderstanding resulting from her ''severe emotional distress'' after being beaten. The woman, identified by Sullivan's attorney as Kerrie Allen, 32, claimed that Sullivan, whom she knows, tried to rape her, burglarized her home when she wasn't there, and left a note on a napkin with his name scribbled in blood. Yesterday Ammann said the woman had recanted and will be charged with filing a false report. All charges against Sullivan were dropped Tuesday, but the memory of his ordeal lingers. ''It's a terrible thing that happened to me,'' said Sullivan, who was arrested by customs agents at Logan International Airport as he returned home from a tour in which Cole entertained troops in the Persian Gulf. ''It's quite traumatic being handcuffed and taken through Terminal E. It was just unbelievable. I don't know why it happened. ''I know we live in a society where by the time this press conference is over, another woman will have been beaten by some guy,'' Sullivan said. ''This was the word of one woman. I'm not saying you shouldn't pay attention to that because most of the time it's true, but some of the time it's not.'' Police in Kentucky apologized to Sullivan for the bad press brought by the arrest. And Sullivan's attorney, Francis T. O'Brien Jr., said that Sullivan will file suit against Allen. Sullivan said he met Allen about 10 years ago and they dated from 1987 to 1990. He had last seen her in June when Cole toured Cincinnati. He said he has no idea why Allen would make up charges against him. Todd McMurtry, Allen's attorney, said, ''There's no personal animosity or anything like that. It was just obviously a distressing situation when someone has beaten you. You can certainly understand what a person who has just been severely beaten might feel about revealing the correct person.'' He said that he was not prepared to address the question of who did assault his client, but that Allen regrets the situation involving Sullivan. Kentucky police filed charges against Sullivan Dec. 23, based on Allen's statements and certain forensic evidence. The crimes were alleged to have occurred in November and December. Sullivan, who continually maintained his innocence, was arraigned Jan. 6. But yesterday Ammann said when the physical evidence was sent for laboratory analysis, the case began to unravel. ''That led us back to her,'' he said. ''It was a probable cause arrest, and the probable cause began to disappear when investigated further, which led to her admission.'' Kentucky police had previously expressed enormous confidence that they had the right man, even though O'Brien had claimed his client was not in Kentucky on the dates in question. But friends, including Paula Cole, rallied to Sullivan's cause, praising his character and even establishing a fund to pay his legal bills. ''I've always known through this ... that he is innocent,'' Cole said in a statement issued yesterday. ''Apart from the fact that we were working together on the dates in question, my heart always had complete faith in Phil.'' - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Jan 1998 12:49:29 EST From: MARC3RD Subject: Re: (harbinger) Boston Music Awards review. Well again I poke my tiny head from the big world to make another post. Wait this is becoming a frequent thing for me lately...ARGH!!! And working like I do at that..... I just wanted to give you all some insight to a new artist by the name of Billie Myers. I give her 2 thumbs up and lots of support for a bright career. Her single 'Kiss The Rain' is getting a touch of airplay in East Texas and I fell in love with the song a while back when I first heard it. There is not any information on her but I do know this is her debut album and that she is on UNI/Universal records and the CD is 'Growing Pains'. I picked the single up for about $3.00 and I come home and blast it all night while I am online. I call everday or so trying to get the song on the main playlist and they said it is gaining popularity so it should be in the list soon. Within the next month or so. I will warn you now that when I first heard the song I was lead to believe it was a man singing cause the vocals are so low. No really powerful high pitches here, it was only through a WBS chatter I was told that Billie is a woman. God did I feel dumb..... Anyways that is my new artist ALERT!!! If anyone has the full CD I would love some feedback. I think for a freshman effort Billie has nothing to prove. I think all she is gonna need to make it will be a strong second single and we will all be listening to her.
