When any artist performs a free outdoor show to thousands of people ( such as Mixfest ), local promoters are afraid to book them in an area club or theatre under the assumption that everyone who really likes Paula would have gone to the free show. Sadly, ticket sales in the entire concert industry have been really sluggish the past year. Some blame the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac for "stealing" everybody's concert money. Just a handful of bad shows can ruin a promoter. Hopefully with the Grammy attention and the upcoming TV appearances, we will get to play a Boston show soon. I live in Boston and I love playing to the hometown crowd ! BTW - Sarah is doing a VH-1 storytellers show later this month and Paula is going to be a guest on the show. The show is being taped soon but I do not know how soon it hits the airwaves. Nobody on this list probably wants to go to this taping, right ?? I will let you know how many tickets are available when I find out. As far as my "situation" is concerned, I suggest you all follow the news closely Monday night or Tuesday. Lets just say there will be a "breaking news story". This has been a Christmas I will never forget ! The Boston Music Awards are this Thursday and Paula is performing 2 songs. It will be like the old days - just Paula on piano and Jay on drums. Our guitar player, Kevin, got married yesterday in New Mexico and is off on a well deserved honeymoon. Mark, our bass player, is home in Los Angeles being Daddy to his new baby ! Let see - my best friends are getting married, having children, getting nominated for Grammys while I turn 40 and spend Christmas in jail. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......... I Love My Life ! Cole, who is up for Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year to name a few, told MTV News' John Norris that she was most excited to hear her name called as a nominee for Producer of the Year. "I suppose I'm the most proud of the nomination for producer, because it's such an incredibly male dominant field," Cole said. "I only know one female producer ever that I've met, and I just feel very glad to have pierced that glass ceiling a little bit. I hope it encourages other females to find the leader within a bit." Cole says that the way she approached her album is not the norm, and that's what makes her proud. "Normally, I think most young female artists are just taken by the hand and hooked up with some knowledgeable producer, but I got to do it myself and I worked really hard to make the most honest album possible, complete with mistakes and distorted microphones, and I wanted to make it an organic album about the human spirit, not about technology and drum machines. I wanted to make it about real human beings." "This Fire" marks Cole's debut as a producer, and earned her a spot on the Producer of the Year list next to Babyface, Kirk Franklin, Mariah Carey's producer Walter Afanasieff, and Keith Thomas who worked with Vanessa Williams and Luther Vandross. **************************************************************************************** Peace. IMO, people think of Sarah as some goddess, perched high on a pedestal, who could never be sexual or bitchy. Sarah tends to be equated with sensuality instead. While they seemed to think a lot of the nominations were bad (Paul McCartney..Flaming Pie???) they seemed to approve of Paula's nods calling her this years "undisputed Grammy Girl." There is a small pic of Paula playing the piano. It is just great to see her getting the recognition she so deserves. amy - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jan 1998 00:36:23 -0500 From: Christopher Povie Subject: Re: (harbinger) Phil's Paula Site -Reply Yeah , umm.... so, like , Hi; I'm knew to thiss list, because I seen Paula on MTV and I likeded her shes hot. Is the version of "Me" on the radio the album cut, or has it been remixed/edited? Any news on a Bside? I am interested in reading the Sarah McL article in Details, or at least knowing what was the gist of what was said. Is it posted anywhere? Is there a snippet of the video for IDWTW (or at least screen captures from it) on anyone's web site? I haven't seen it on MTVEurope and last time I checked, Paula's official WB website still just had the cowboys video. (I am surprised they never updated...) And about Lisa Loeb, I actually really like her new album. I especially like Lisa's attitude...I read a hilarious letter from her before Firecracker was released that mocked critics and the public's perception of her in a lighthearted way. (She did predict that the critics would take the cheap and easy shots at saying "Firecracker fizzles" "Firecracker doesn't ignite." etc.) Her people seem to take really good care of her fans, which I think is cool. That "thinking of the fans" attitude is another reason why I love Sarah McL...she admitted that she used to buy singles for the Bsides of her favorite artists, so she wanted to provide her fans with alternate recordings. Her fanclub is EXCELLENT. When I was a member, I got cool CDs included in the membership price at Christmas. Her newsletter is also very well crafted. BTW, did Nettwork send out a Sarah CD for members this year? If so, could someone please post what tracks were on it. Speaking of merchandise, I have to praise the Paula merchandise page! I got the music book delivered within a week of ordering. (I really like it a lot. As a note to those not thrilled with the notation of a few songs-- on the piano, just use the guitar chords for a guide (listen to the "Hush" bootleg for an even clearer guide of what Paula does on the piano). The chords are pretty much right on the money. ) Anyway, I hope that in the future we'll see a special edition CD for sale on that page with a couple of unreleased tracks on it!
