I agree with you inasmuch as each of us should exercise our individual rights as consumers and surely should not support companies whose politics do not agree with your own. Other than that, I think your position is rather shortsighted. Personally, I have no problem with Hugh Hefner or his organization. I figure that he's not doing any more damage to the popular perception of the female race than the women who are posing nude in his mag. Certainly no one is forcing those women them to drop trou for money. In fact, they seem not to have any problem whatsoever with their choice to pose nude. More importantly, I strongly support Paula's decision to allow an article about her to appear in Playboy's pages and I will most assuredly get my hands on a couple of those back issues as soon as practicable. I want to read the article and I want the photo for my still-developing website. I know there a more than a few card-carrying (and sometimes party-line- toting) feminists on this list. Be aware that it is in no way my wish to piss any of you off, but the soapbox doesn't appear to be occupado at the moment so here's my take on the whole subject... Paula is an intelligent, thoughtful, talented, independent, forward-thinking woman who has taken control of her own music career and her own life. She's physically beautiful in a rather unconventional manner. She probably considers herself to be a feminist to one degree or another (I don't know - I've never spoken to her about that subject). She is in touch with her sexuality and has no apparent problems expressing it. Basically, Paula presents an image of the evolved woman. As such, it seems to me that Paula's appearance could potentially be a powerful influence over the readers of Playboy - a magazine that has become infamous for showing nude photos of women who are presumed to be the polar opposite of all the things that are Paula ("you make me feel like I wanna be a dumb blonde in a centerfold..."). Don't you think that there's a chance that someone reading the magazine (yeah.. people actually do read the articles, too) might benefit in some way from seeing that a woman (namely, Paula) can be just as powerful and sexy as any of the spread-eagle bottle-blondes wearing staples in their abdomens? My thoughts have been with you for these past few weeks and I am glad that you are rising above it all with your usual grace. Hang tough, man! We're all right here for you. > Anyway, HOW ABOUT THOSE GRAMMY'S !!!!!! WOO-HOO!!!!! Paula is kickin' ass and takin' names!! Like most everyone on the list, I would love to see Paula sweep all of the categories in which she's been nominated. In fact, I'd probably wet my pants if that happened (okay.... it's not a pretty sight in a man of my age, but not far from the truth either). However, from looking at her competition, I am guessing that won't happen. Here are my guesses at who will get what on Grammy night: Record Of The Year: Paula for "WHATCG?" Song Of The Year: Disgusting as it is, I think No Doubt will probably win this one with their insipid "Don't Speak." Album Of The Year: Hard to say. I'm even split between thinking that this Grammy will go to _This Fire_ or Radiohead's _OK Computer_. Best New Artist: Another close one, but I'll bet it's either Fiona Apple or Erykah Badu (if it isn't going to be Paula, then I'm rooting for Erykah). Best Pop Vocal Performance: Based on who she's up against, Paula pretty much doesn't stand a chance in this category. Considering it's for best *pop* performance, I think it'll go to Mariah Carey for "Butterfly," but it could just as easily go to Jewel for "Foolish Games." Best Pop Album: First, why in the hell is _Surfacing_ even nominated? The Grammys once again are falling prey to their own popularity contest mentality, I see. Anyway, even if I look at _Surfacing_ as a throwing Sarah Sood a bone (which I do), the rest of the nominees are hard to choose from. _This Fire_ is unquestionably one of my favorite albums ever, but Jamiroquai's _Travelling Without Moving_ is an incredible album with a totally fresh sound, and Fleetwood Mac's _The Dance_ has to be one of the best reunion albums I've ever heard. I suppose if I had to guess, I'd have to say it will probably go to Jamiroquai. Producer of the Year: This is the one I'd most like to see Paula win. However, Kenny Edmonds isn't quite finished working his formula into the ground yet and millions of his fans are stilling buying the stuff. So, I'm going to guess that, once again, Babyface will take home another Grammy for his collection. > I spoke to Paula last night and she was blown away by all the > nominations. This will be one busy year for all of us !!!!!! Congratulations to you, Paula! You've worked so hard for this. I hope that the voting committee has more sense than I give them credit for having and that they hand all of those pretty little gold statues to you that night. But, even if that doesn't happen, please know (and I think I can speak for pretty much all of us) that we all believe that you deserve each and every one of them. We love you, Paula, and we'll be rooting for you!! > Paula will be performing a doing on the Grammy's ! That will be the > coup d'etat !! Awesome!!! Oh, man! I soooo hope that Paula performs "Me" on the Grammy's. Would that wow America or what?? I suppose it would be too much to hope that she might performing "Mississippi." That'd bring down the house! > Funny how all the world will now know what we've known since > Harbinger was released - Paula is one amazing artist ! Preach, brother! Preach! ;^) Looks like our girl is on the brink, folks. She's absolutely all over the place lately. I've been home with a nasty flu this week and have heard "WHATCG" on the commercials for a new series (actually a redux of an old series) coming out on CBS called "The Magnificent Seven." And then, I noticed a couple of days later that the Warner Brothers network is airing a new show called "Dawson's Creek," which has been featuring "IDWTW" during that show's frequent commercials. "The Magnificent Seven" started airing on Jan. 5th. "Dawson's Creek" premieres on Jan. 20th. > PS Until the legal aspects of my case are over, I cannot go into any > detail but when everything is said and done, I expect Kenn to write the > screenplay and Paula said she'd write the soundtrack. Yes!!! Finally, my big break!! ;^) Once you can be a bit more loose-lipped about it, have your people get in touch with my people, Phil. We can definitely get a movie of the week out of this, but I'm thinking that with a few tweaks here and there it could play on the big screen. Have you considered the casting at all? You going to play yourself or did you have someone else in mind? What about Paula? She will pretty much have to appear as herself. Who else could ever even come close to carrying off one of her live performances? And, naturally, I'm going to have to write myself into this script somehow, but don't worry, I'll just play myself so as to keep within a decent budget with regard to actors' salaries. :^) Call me. We'll lunch. Ciao, bella. Peace. Like our friend Kenn, I was also home most of this week with a nasty flu-like cold and caught a quick snippet on VH-1 where Paula said that this nomination meant the most to her because this is typically such a male-dominated category. I agree that I'd *love* to see Paula take this one home. I guess I can relate to the excitement of a woman excelling in a male dominated field! >Awesome!!! Oh, man! I would also love to see "Me" performed at the grammies... this song means a great deal to me personally. Unfortunately, these award shows usually only allow performers to do their one big hit. I hope I am wrong, though! I wouldn't mind seeing "Cowboys" again, it's just that I LOVE "Me." By the way, "Me" just went into heavy rotation on a local radio station here.... has it been officially released in conjunction with the grammy hoopla, or is our local radio just enlightened enough to realize what a great song this is?
