I feel really mercenary for using the list for this, but please let me assure you this isn't my intention -- i'm just anxious for some paula footage. i live in australia, and well, no one else here has cottoned onto her brilliance yet (dammit, they better take notice of those 7 grammy noms!!!). pathetic, i know! :) i was just wondering whether there might be someone out there willing to make me up a video of paula's tv appearances (letterman, sessions etc) -- it sounds like a lot of brilliant stuff is coming up (saturday nite live et al) , and i know a lot has been in the past. i am more than willing to cover tape and postage costs, and would truly be eternally grateful if anyone were able to help me out. ~*~Heidi~*~ - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 05:34:29 EST From: Ajlh Subject: (harbinger) Whoa.....AOL 4.0 is cool.... Yet they ignored the Spice Girls, whose debut Spice, ws 1997's best selling album.... The hip slant of the top 4 categories (song, record, album, new artist) stems in part from a quality control panel (NARAS president Michael) Greene instituted 3 years ago. The unidentified music professionals pare the top 20 votegetters by ejecting choices they deem unworthy or inappropriate. The panel system substitutes critic pleasing acts for household names, says veteran pop music analyst Paul Grein. If the panel hadnt intevened, Im sure Fleetwood Mac and possibly Mariah Carey would be in the album category. He's stunned that Elton John's Candle in the Wind 1997, the Princess Di tribute that became history's best selling single didnt grab a best record nod. It would seem the runaway favorite, not only to be nominated, but to win, as We are the World won in 1985 Grein says. Its almost obligatory. Thats the clearest sign that the panel made its voice heard. Im sure the voters had Elton in their top 5, but the panel decided to go with more obscure choices. Grein believes the panel's tinkering achieves the desired result but kind of rigs the result. They're less impressed by a brand name and more apt to listen to the records. Thats positive. But i htink its inherently elitist to let the tastes of 20 or 30 people overrule the wishes of voters. It takes away some of the point of the peer system. (then it went into a segment about how not having someone like Elton John on the broadcast is going to have lower ratings.... (Then, Ken Barnes, editior of Microsoft's Music Central Web SIte and a long time NARAS observer) sees the new artist category as the year's most controversial. The glaring absence of the SPice Girls may vex fans, but Barnes regards the omission as a bid for credbility. I call it the Taste of Honey syndrome, he says referring to the groups new artist trimuph in 78. They had one hit and disappeared from the face of the earth... He also expects objections to Cole'sinclusion in the new artist slot. In the past only artists with debuts released in the eligbility period could be called 'new' NARAS relaxed the guideline recently to embrace any artist's breakthrough recording, whether its a debut or not. Even with criteria as liberal as that, Cole's first album was out for 4 years on a major label with attendant widespread press coverage and some degree of radio airplay, Barnes says. It called plenty of attention to her." article byedna gunderson- usa today January 7,1998. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 07:37:21 -0500 (EST) From: jason and jill Subject: Re: (harbinger) Whoa.....AOL 4.0 is cool.... I have to agree with most everyone that this list is one of a kind. It's seems to be a true community of friends, a rarity these days. What I've enjoyed the most is the acceptance everyone has towards new people whether they are big Paula fans that collect all of her music or someone who just enjoys her music occaisionally. I first heard Paula on a sampler disc imago sent out '93 (The imago Traveling Road Show). When I heard Paula sing Bethlehem and Saturn Girl I was blown away by her voice. They were demo tracks that Paula had done in CA and is probably still my favorite recording of Bethlehem. Shortly after that I got to see Paula in Chicago when she was doing a coffee house tour. It was a small backroom stage and there were no more than 50 people there. It was a fantastic show. Unfortunately, that is the last time I've seen Paula live, but at least I was able to meet her and tell her how much I enjoyed her music. I was overjoyed to hear of her much deserved Grammy nominations. Good luck to Paula and everyone else. - -- - ------------------------------------------------------------ Kevin Agee kda@sky.net - ------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 13:04:13 EST From: MARC3RD Subject: Re: (harbinger) paula footage?? <<< "Could you please spell that name?" Does it seam like I have too much time on my hands today? I believe it is the music that draws you in and makes you feel things. Words are not always necessary. Our parents, and for most of you, grandparents were proof of that. It's just been the last half of the century that everything has to have words. Besides Kenny G, how many instrumentals have you heard on the charts lately? Now, a voice can be a beautiful instrument also. You don't have to understand the words to appreciate it's blend with the music. In fact, sometimes understanding the words can really take away from the songs. (what is the song about popping a cap in Sanchos face? I like the music, but will not listen to it because of content.) But every now and then you find a special song that the music really gets inside you, and then the words start becoming more and more important. Like some people. Sometimes no matter how much you know about them you want more. And every time you hear it you start crying and you just don't know why. Maybe because it fills an empty space inside that has been there tooo long. And it kind of fills that space or at least helps you forget about the pain of it for a while. Or, maybe because it gives you hope to go on and do better, to try to make change within. After all that's where it all starts. The idea isn't to tell one person to shut up, it's to steer the list away from generating many replies...I try not to be very strict, but posting about web browsers to three different lists, with 800-100 subscribers, was a bit much. And computer topics sometimes get lists rolling... Harbinger's host, smoe.org, got booted from using its isp's mail delivery system b/c of the huge amount of mail jewel's list produced/produces. Smoe has to deliver all list posts itself now, and if a second list gets as busy as jewel the result will likely be smoe not hosting lists.
