My rage subsided for a bit until Monday I reached the final straw... I got online with one of the techs because my browser for AOL would stop working if I signed off and then later got back on with my computer running. So the idiot tech suggested I remove one of the adapters on the network connection. Yeah whatever....Then I couldn't launch AOL. I won't bore you with all the other things I had to do to restore my version of 3.0 for Windows 95. I at one point lost all my files that I had saved in my file cabinet, favorite places, etc, but through some bloody miracle managed to get them back. Now the only thing that isn't working at this point is my address book which has some ugly corruption to the file because it lost all my addresses *sigh*... After two days, numerous phone calls to their "tech" line (and I use that term loosely) and lost sleep, I have had it!!!! All I want is a service that is 19.95, unlimited access and no hassles!!! Well...musical taste is indeed a very personal thing, I tend to feel that whilst some artists touch that raw, distant place in us and make us go: "ohhh!", there can be those artists others *adore* and we try to get into, but just don't react to in the same manner. It all comes down to a matter of individual preference and sure, while we'd all love to convert others to our musical ways, what a boring world it would be if we all liked exactly the same artists, hey? I am a big Ani fan, and whilst I really like her, it might be that you just don't like her; that she just isn't for you, and no matter what anyone says to you, there's nothing wrong with that! Likewise, Tori is a goddess in my world, and whilst - yeah, we all feel compelled to defend those artists we adore against criticism - you cannot force people to like them (I am not, incidentally, saying you are criticising her -- not at ALL, i was just saying generally!). Um, but I rave!! hehe! As far as Ani goes, her records are all so different... but I wouldn't recommend getting Dilate as a first. For me, Not A Pretty Girl *really* spoke to me, so I tend to suggest that -- it is, to my mind, a good cornerstone of all things Ani. On the other hand, Living In Clip is good because it gives a great overview of Ani's entire catalogue...but the songs DO sound a LOT different live to what they do on record. I don't know, this probably hasn't helped at all! hehe! On a different note: the Grammys are going to be BRILLIANT this year... sigh, now we all just have to cross our little fingers that all Paula, Shawn, Sarah, Fiona and The Wallflowers perform live!!! Smiles to all... I did not check the actuall cd (I forgot, it's in a big magazine and it was playing a cd when I thought of it) There are a lot of artists out there who's career was launched from other artists songs. I still say Ani recorded the song and it just didn't hit. Is it Alana's fault? She found a song she liked and recorded it and it hit. (hula hoops, Yo yo's, Pet rocks, or songs, who can explain) I maybe could see if the whole rest of the album was crap and she grabbed the song before Ani really got a chance to do anything with it. But, doesn't sound like the case and the cd is good. And who knows maybe this publicity might just help launch Ani's career. Every review I have read mentions that 32 flavors is an Ani tune. But, it's always the butts that will get you, I do have a problem with the video. Although it is one theme that fitts the song it is not even a good one and if anyone has a right to screem ripoff it is Alantis fans. Remember the video with Alantis on the road trip with 3 other Alantis' in the car with her. I think she should have been just dressed really different in each scene. Maybe one scene really glamorous, one punked out, one tom boyish or whatever, but what she did has been done and recently. Oh, I definitely agree with that. I don't know the lyrics to most of my favorite songs!! It's embarrassing to try to sing along, because it reminds me how poorly I know them. :-) What draws me to a song is the whole experience. If I can understand the lyrics and they're silly (kinda how I feel about Jewel), then that detracts from the experience. If a song has brilliant lyrics but just an OK tune, that detracts. So when I wasn't turned on my Tori or Ani's music, I thought the lyrics might be where I'd find something to like about them. But that hasn't worked yet. :( > and i still think the best poetry is bound and on a bookshelf at the local > library... but who reads nowadays???? I'm not so sure about that, for me. Maybe it's because I haven't really made a connection with poetry, either. But the interplay between excellent poetic lyrics and beautiful music is an experience I seek regularly. Reading it on a page does very little for me. Tony Levin, Paula's bassist for This Fire, has a solo album out called World Diary. It's released on his own label, Papabear Records. Check out the web page http://www.papabear.com/pbworld.htm for some RealAudio files on two of the tracks. Tony also played alongside Paula on Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live tour. Also on the papabear web page, Tony has his own little web space, which he posts some personal info on every month or so. Did you know besides being a rocking bassist, he also does oil painting? Anyway, he's working mostly in NYC right now, and he had a request for people in NYC. Since we've got quite a few people here who live there or are intimately familiar, I thought I'd pass this along to help Tony get his caffeine: Any NY based coffee fans out there? I'm based in NYCity lately, and surprisingly, I can't find a great cup of espresso here. Sure, there are the chains that are popping up everywhere, but I'm talking about a place where the barrista is serious about making each cup right - short, strong, and with considerable 'crema' - preferably a small place with some seats available (unusual in the city!) There must be places like that - if you know of one, please drop me a line via PBearRec@aol.com (titled "coffee") I think this may have been posted a couple weeks/months ago by someone else, but I'm now ordering the disk and thought I'd toss out that call for coffee. Greetings to all of you in Paula Cole land ! I know so many of you have been waiting to hear from me and I apologize that it has taken so long but when it hits the fan like it has, there is much to sort out - both in one's mind and in the eyes of the legal system. Thanks to all of you who have sent me personal e-mails concerning my situation. Rest assured that I am 100 % innocent of any of the charges which were brought against me. Sadly, though it is incredibly easy to prove my whereabouts on the dates in question, the legal system must go through the motions and I must oblige ( though inside I am kicking and screaming that I am innocent and it is SO easy to prove it !!!! ). I equate it to kind of winning the anti-lottery. This happens to 1 in 5 million people, but you never think it will happen to you. I now plan on playing my arrest warrant numbers in the Massachusetts lottery on a regular basis !!!!!! Anyway, HOW ABOUT THOSE GRAMMY'S !!!!!! I spoke to Paula last night and she was blown away by all the nominations. This will be one busy year for all of us !!!!!! Paula will be performing a doing on the Grammy's ! That will be the coup d'etat !! Also - here is some breaking news. We are doing Saturday Night Live on Feb 7th and Letterman on Feb 17th. Many, many more offers are now pouring in and I'll keep you up to date as often as I can. Funny how all the world will now know what we've known since Harbinger was released - Paula is one amazing artist ! We had my 40th birthday party the other night and Paula and Jay ( her drummer ) came all the way up to Boston to join me, my family and friends in the celebration ! What a great time we all had ! ( The best part was the argument between two of the wait staff over whether it was really Paula in the restaurant !!- I never tell ! ) Well, I have to go now and try and get things back on track. We are performing at the Boston Music Awards on January 15th and then we hit the road again on January 29th ! Because of the Saturday Night Live show, some shows are being juggled around so keep an eye out for current info. I will do my best to keep everyone posted ! Love, Phil PS Until the legal aspects of my case are over, I cannot go into any detail but when everything is said and done, I expect Kenn to write the screenplay and Paula said she'd write the soundtrack. I've got to say, it was an interesting year for me, and I'd like to share my year as it relates to Paula and this list. [If this is too long for you to read right now, I hope you can save it for later.] When I first got an email account at school, back in the early 90's, I subscribed to a couple email lists devoted to my favorite artists. But the lists were rather impersonal, and they had a signal to noise ratio worse than the gold/silt ratio in a California river after the '49 rush. Though I loved the music of the artists who were the nominal topic for these lists, I couldn't deal with the volume or the attitudes that I encountered. I didn't have the time or the patience to sift through the junk to find anything useful. In short, I gave up altogether. I stuck with listening to Peter Gabriel and my few faves. My roommate was a dj at a local station, so I got to listen to his music at the apartment, but I didn't care then, and I still don't. They never impacted my thoughts on more than a superficial level. I didn't listen to the radio back then and I still don't, except on my 8-minute drive to and from work or while reading a chapter in a book as I wind down for sleep. I don't watch MTV, or VH1, or any other music medium. My small collection of cds was more than enough. So learning about This Fire had to be Fate. Lachesis was carefully weaving my life-string one night as I was setting my alarm on my trusty clock radio. 'ON' [click] "...blah blah blah Paula Cole blah bl... [click]" '6:50, SET'. I don't even know what song was about to be played, because I'd already turned off the radio before it registered in my mind. Luckily though, as I rolled over and closed my eyes, I recognized the name from Peter Gabriel's Secret World Live cd. And on a whim, I went to the store the very next day to pick up her cd (a musical splurge, since I don't do that very often). But I purchased it without reservation because I'd been enjoying her voice on SWL for years. I was quite satisfied to find that Paula had profound thoughts to complement her amazing voice. Her thoughts, put to music, soared with confidence, anger, and pain. They reached into the depths of my subconsciousness, and provided a template with which I could compare my own thoughts and experiences. This Fire would stay in my cd player for weeks on end, and I would love every minute of it. And what was this on the center page of the cover jacket? Some web address that didn't look like a corporate publicity site? Since my current research work involved long periods of downloading data from a remote site using the internet, I took a break one evening to check it out, This Fire playing loudly on my headphones. Paula's decision to list a personal fan page under the credits on a major release made me want to know more about her. I checked out Brian's site thoroughly, posted some gooshy crap on the fan comments page, but elected not to subscribe to the mailing list which was mentioned. I did purchase Harbinger, another good decision on my part, and another cd occupying my player for weeks. I was on a roll. And the longer I listened to her music, the more I was captivated by what she had to say. I was enjoying a veritable feast of music, having purchased just three cds in the previous two years. I wanted to know more. I had to know more. So I took a deep breath and subscribed to that mailing list. I vowed to read the posts with the patience of a (successful) gold prospector. I lurked for some time, running the posts through my virtual sluice. I didn't want to rush to judgement, since this river was probably filled with die-hard fans who had discovered Paula years previously in some backcountry dive with cinder-block walls and a busted amp. I didn't rush to judgement as I read posts about arm pit hair and fair- weather fans. I didn't rush to judgement as some cast aspersions on others who closed their comments with "peace," or "peace!" I didn't rush to judgement, and I soon found precious nuggets in my new email-sluice. I looked forward to Ken's philosophical essays, Chris' satirical snippets, and everyone's friendly banter. I began to feel the erratic tide of the list, and the list members slowly became gleaming voices on topics musical and not. And there was this one guy who seemed to know everything that Paula was doing, planning, or dreaming. This guy Phil seemed to know all the inside information on what Paula was up to. And he was sharing it openly. And I cherished him along with the others. I had certainly found a great river to prospect. My years away from music lists had taught me that a little patience yields great returns. That knowledge, and picking a good spot to set up, had truly yielded the mother load. The sifting was easy. And when a vote was taken on whether to limit my river to Paula-only content, I was dismayed at the possibility of losing part of my now-valued resource. I cried, "No!" as loudly as email would allow, and I must have been heard, or at least I must not have cried alone, for Jason heeded my cry. And harbinger@smoe.org was born. Summer brought Lilith -- another web page to peruse -- with new artists for me to listen to and read about, and more cds to purchase. And my river brought Lilith reviews. There were concerts on Eisenhowers and free radio station jams, and more reviews. Paula toured Europe, and back to the States, and there were more reviews. And each review washed in another sparkling nugget. I offered my own review of This Fire for my school's weekly, and members kindly offered their criticism. And I was grateful. It was a two-way river, and I'd finally decided to share what I could. Through the year, new people floated past my river-side station. They joined what I considered my own little email conversation, my own little corner of contentment and amusement. There were vivacious traveling teenagers and wise, judy-cious parents; there were confusing spanish Pennsylvanians and Carolina-vacationing lyric archivists. And they were all welcome at my sluice. So I look back at '97, and I find a river filled with gold. More gold than I can count or credit. I am wealthy beyond my expectations. And I think back on '97 again, and realize I should call and thank my mother for that birthday gift in '84. I guess she was tired of climbing the stairs to wake me for school. Happy belated birthday, Phil! Those Grammies nominations are well-deserved! I was psyched to hear about them. What a wild roller-coaster for you. Now let's hope that the cops can figure out who has set you up. I can only imagine. So who votes on these Grammy things so we all know who to threaten using the names of the other nominees... no wait, that sounds too similar to the present situation. Good luck and take care, Burr. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V3 #9 *****************************
