I have never been able to "get into" Tori. Don't know why, but I believe I haven't given her enough of a chance. WHy? Because I haven't been able to get into her. Vicious circle. I received Ani's "living in clip" for xmas from one of my kids and I couldn't wait to hear her. I had heard so much about her and many people had recommended her to me, based on my musical likes. I don't think I like her. Really. I keep trying but all I hear are swears and no melodies. And I swear. I have one of the worse mouths around sometimes. I even put the cds in with others and hit random but I still go, "who is that??-yech" But I want to like her. Cause she lookes funky and I like her boldness and her ballsy woman style-Should I try dilate?? I think I'm looking for music with more fluidity. Well, something is just not there for me when I hear her. But I will keep trying. And if someone wants to make me a Tori tape I will try listening to her in the car and maybe you will convert me. Too much *rambling* in her music -- not exactly the *sing-along* kind of tunes (not that that's what makes or breaks good music). I think I'm looking for music with more I'd say "YES!!" to 'Dilate'. I really hope you give it a chance, as it is Ani's most "produced" album by far, and it is probably closest to that "fluidity" you're looking for. I love Ani, both her personality and her music, but I will give it to you that she is not very accessible, especially on the first listen. I think in that way she and Tori are very much alike -- they're sound is so "out there" compared to the norm, that they just don't immediatly grab you as Sarah and Paula, for example, might. By any means, I adore both Ani and Tori, but with Ani in particular it took me a while to "get it" and to eventually connect. But 'Dilate' is a magnificent album and I'd say, that when listened to with an open heart and mind, a very hard album not to like. A great resource from the same radio station that has a compilation out lith the live version of "Jolene." This might seem really ignorant, but who is Jules Shear? Anybody know the details of this duet, for instance what song Paula does with Jules? Comes out pretty soon..." jules shear... he was the original host of mtv unplugged.. back when it was great.. and he was the former lover of aimee mann, who i never thought got over him until i heard on the mannlist that she is now marrying michael penn (former best new artist grammy winner!!!)... i remember he had a critically praised record out back in the mid 80s with a song called steady on it... but he was one of those quirky intellectual brilliant songwtiers that never got wide public acceptance.... but this definately sounds like a cd worth buying... spanish - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 20:03:01 EST From: Honoku Subject: Re: Re: (harbinger) duet with jules shear? i think spanish summed up jules pretty well, except it seems to me he was also in a band prior to his solo stuff. i keep thinking squeeze or that other band that had the song turning japaneese. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 21:02:27 EST From: Honoku Subject: (harbinger) jules shear i remembered it was the vapors that did turning japaneese, and rememebered jules was not in the vapors. the group i was thinking of was teardrop explodes, but he wasn't in that either. so i looked him up on my music central cd rom, and here's what it says; b. 7 march 1952, pittsburgh pa. singer songwriter recorded numerous albums both solo and with groups beginning in the late '70s, and wrote for such artists as cyndi lauper, the bangles, art garfunkel, and olivia newton john. shear moved from pittsburgh to la in the '70s. his first recorded work was with a band the funky kings in 1976, also featuring jack tempchin who had written previously with the eagles. 2 years later shear fronted jules and the polar bears, a pop group that critics lumped in with the emerging new wave movement. the group debuted with the excellent "got no breeding", which featured some of shears finest work, most notably "lovers by rote". they broke up after one additional album in 1980. shear next surfaced with the solo "watch dog" in 1983 and released three further albums under his own name. he briefly fronted the band the reckless sleepers in 1988, which released one album, but shear has yet to make a major commercial impact. in 1988 iain matthews recorded an entire album of shear compositions for windam hill. it is alleged that many of the lyrics of aimee mann's "whatever" in 1994 were directed to shear, following the breakupo of thier relationship. end of article. in the discography they say he performed on the first cyndy lauper album, but not much else of note. it is kind of funny the guy is bit of a household name, who never did much except have a great girlfriend, in a poor relationship. ah such is fame. maybe his big day is still on the way. i would guess his next album will sell a few copies, at least within this circle. it would be funny if Paula's grammy awards gave jules some coat tails to ride to prosperity. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Jan 1998 21:05:10 EST From: Honoku Subject: Re: Re: Re: (harbinger) duet with jules shear? hey fiona apple is on letterman tonight. unless she goes skiing first. is that too tasteless? sorry ! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Jan 1998 18:00:38 -0800 From: "John W.
