Their songs are relatively standard fare, and their singer has a strong but non-distinctive voice. Their one redeeming value is their drummer, who sort of reminds me of Mick Fleetwood because he is old and looks like he is having an absolute ball up there on stage... Not a female, but...I don't have a problem with Tori or Ani, and have pretty much everything by both of them, but their fans scare the bejesus out of me. Nice, slow, them and Sarah on one bill is a narcoleptics nightmare...or dream ticket, depending. The Devlins are certainly not disagreeable, but during the Glenside/Keswick Theater concert I was motivated between numbers to yell "Play the fast song!!!" and a few others started doing the same. Finally, it turned out they had one fast song, so they played it. Maybe not *very* fast, but at least somewhat loud... If you bought a Fender guitar from Ani and had 30 hit records playing it Would you list Ani and Fender in your credits? Would you feel bad because Ani or Fender never had a hit with it? Would you stop recording music or make your own guitar cause Anis fans or Fenders customers were upset with you? Ani had her shot with the song and it just didn't hit. It's not because she isn't as good. It's just one of those hula hoop things. The right place at the right time with the right product. Who knows maybe Alana will write a song that Ani will hit on. There are thousands of artists out there who have hit on other artists songs. Who needs to use other peoples songs more a well established artist or a new starting out one? Give her a break, I don't really think she said "watch me upset everyone and..... I'm sure Ani was paid for her song. Just my opinion they are both awesome artists. I suppose there must be one, but I'll be damned if I can name a cd/album where one person thanks another for deigning to be covered. I've got a McCoy Tyner Trio cd of of Bacharach songs where theres a big thanks to Burt, but that's for a whole cd, not one song... I guess I've been listening to too much jazz lately to get excited over "it's only a cover" witch trials...rock/pop seems like the only genre where someone isn't any good unless they write their own songs, sing them, and play at least one major instrument on each track. Hell, the best new release I've bought in a couple of month's was Diana Krall's new one, and it's all other people's songs...and I sure as hell would want to see her any day over the friggin' Devlins.
