Well... not exactly *the* Great White North, but very close to it. Tomorrow morning, I'll be hopping on a jet plane embarking for the land of my youth - Michigan. That's right... nine (count 'em, NINE) full days of bitterly cold temperatures and razor-sharp arctic winds. According to my parents, the snow has come and gone once so far, so we'll just have to wait and see if I end up wading through waist-deep drifts before all is said and done. Yes, it's that time of year when I make the second of my bi-annual trips back to the family homestead in Jackson (J-Town to those of us who did our time there and escaped). If any of you have seen Jodie Foster's _Home For The Holidays_, then you have a pretty good picture of what awaits me in the frozen tundra I once called home. So, I just want to take this moment to wish all of you a wonderful holiday, whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, any combination of those days or any I've forgotten. Personally, I'm planning to celebrate the Winter Solstice this evening by going to eat the best caviar and blinis in Manhattan with my fellow pagan and best friend, Lynette, later tonight at Petrossian. My thanks go to everyone here who has made this year on Harbinger such an enjoyable one. First, to Paula for giving 'til it hurts and, additionally, to Phil, Jay, Kevin, Mark and Adam for being there to help Paula share her music with all of us. Naturally, I'd be remiss if I didn't also thank our illustrious leader, Jason Greshes, for keeping this joint running like a well-oiled machine and entertaining me with his much appreciated and delightfully twisted sense of humor. To everyone else, I look forward to talking more with all of you in '98 and wish all the best for you and your families and friends in the year to come. So, if I don't succumb to the bone-chilling cold or mind-numbing conversation in Michigan at some point over the next week or so, I'll be returning to the east coast on January 2nd. With any luck, I'll see you all around these parts then. Give me strength.... Peace, Harbinger. Ugh. When I was getting by BA at the University of Rochester I asked I guy from Minnesota what the difference in temperature between Rochester and Minnesota was. At that time it was in the middle of a nice lake-effect snowstorm, with winds blowing down from Canada, the reports on tv were laughing about the wind chill, outside I could see tons of snow being blow UP the front of the building, and I was damn glad I lived in the school's largest dorm with a built-in cafeteria and many, many refrigators of beer to hit, b/c I hadn't left the damn dorm in five days. [I had blow out my knee a couple of months before, and was still in a brace and on crutches.] His answer was: "Well, the diffrence is that in Minnesota, right now, it's cold." I'm a relatively new Paula Cole fan (just since Where Have All the Cowboys Gone) but as soon as I heard the song I ran out and got the album. Sorry to admit, I had never heard her perform before that time. Paula is totally awesome! I'm looking forward to learning more about Paula from this list. Last night I had the privilege of seeing her perform here in the country of Bahrain (located in the Persian Gulf). She is doing a tour for the USO here in the Gulf. It was a great performance by a most talented lady. My husband is in the military stationed here. I'm the mother of four great kids and yes, I do like living here. I look at life as one adventure after another.
