Sadly, you are correct, Stewart. I received my CDs in yesterday's post and, as soon as I got home, popped one of them into my stereo before I even had my coat off. The back of the CD lists track #6 as being "Nietzche's Eyes," however, the track is actually "hush, hush, hush." A male member of the audience, indeed, does shout out "Nietzche's Eyes" just before Paula begins "hush" so I can only assume that ther person(s) responsible for the CD liner were confused or simply clueless. > Also, it is surprising that "Ordinary" is not on the track list. I think she > played it right after Cowboys. But, please correct me if I am wrong. I don't really know if "Ordinary" was played after "Cowboys" or not. I seem to recall the same thing, but I don't have the tape in front of me right now and can't confirm that. The track listing on the bootleg CD, which is entitled "Hush," by the way, is as follows: Happy Home Throwing Stones Mississippi Bethlehem Tiger hush, hush, hush (incorrectly labeled as "Nietzche's Eyes" on the liner) Feelin' Love Where Have All The Cowboys Gone Carmen I Don't Want To Wait Jolene > I would love to have a live version of "NE" Me, too. How cruel that, through some typographical error, my hopes have been dashed. :^( The only time I've ever heard Paula perform "NE" was during the sound check at West 54th Sessions and, again, during the actual W. 54th recording. She said, as she has at other times in the past, that she doesn't usually perform "NE" in concert because it is a very emotional song for her. I can totally understand where she's coming from, but I still hope for a time when she will feel more comfortable performing it more often. If not, maybe she could include the song on her own live CD. I think I can safely say that all of us are looking forward to the release of a live CD from Paula and that most of us would love to see "NE" on the track listing. > Was anyone at that show that knows if she played it? I wasn't there, but, as I said, I doubt she did "NE" at the Troubador. > And I do once again heartily recommend Rainy Day records. As I have > said before, their service is fast and I have been really happy with the > quality. (And it only costs $10 to ship up to eight CDs to Finland!) I second that emotion, Stewart. Everyone I dealt with at Rainy Day was so incredibly nice and the service was extremely prompt. They even included one of their business cards with a handwritten, personalized note on the back of it, thanking me for my purchase and expressing their hope that I enjoy the CDs. That's a wonderful way to run a business and I appreciate Rainy Day's conscientiousness very much. Just try to find that kind of service at any music store in New York City. As far as the quality of the boot is concerned, I'd say that this is definitely a great sounding CD. There are a few songs where the sound is a little muffled for my taste (Happy Home, Throwing Stones, Bethlehem and Cowboys), but, for the most part, the rest of the CD kicks ass. The highlights of the CD? For me, the performances of "Watch The Woman's Hands," "Carmen" and "Tiger." To me, "WTWH" is the best song on this CD, for sound quality and fantastic execution. "Carmen" starts off a little shaky (Paula's voice wavers pretty noticably on the first "Carmen...." and there are two brief moments of feedback from the mic), but it ends up being such a soft and intimate version of the song that it makes me want to hear it performed again that way. I think this song would be killer with a strong bossa nova sound worked into it. "Tiger" is great throughout, but what makes the song on this CD is the vocalizations at the end of the tune. The This Fire version gives you an idea of the strength of Paula's voice at the end of this song, but the live version brings it home. Awesome! The rest of the songs on the CD are very good, too, but those three are my favorites. I would definitely recommend that you all try to get the CD version of this bootleg. The tape version has been floating around for a while now (I got mine in a trade several months ago), but the sound quality on the tape is not as good as that on the CD. Be aware that, at three or four points during the concert, a radio announcer comes in (between sets and during the applause) to give station identification (101.9 FM). It doesn't interfere with the show, but it is there. This CD was bootlegged from a radio broadcast of the Troubador show. > I am loving the Unplugged Sarah boot I got. Isn't that the one that has all of the songs from the Fumbling VHS tape? Anyone have info on this? > They said they will also be getting in a new Sarah boot called "Building > a Mystery" with live stuff from Surfacing. I am ALL over that too! Ooooh. Cool! Let us know when that comes to pass, Stew. I don't love Surfacing, but there are a few songs on there I'd like to have on a live CD. > Anyway, here's to the new Paula boot! (I wonder if it is a BLACK > Boot? ;) ) Actually, it's black and white, with blue and red accents. :^) The front of the CD shows Paula in negative exposure (as in film, not public nudity), with the words "Paula Cole" and "Hush" in red. The picture of Paula that was used is one that Warner Bros. has up on their sight (one of the ones with the orange background where Paula's wearing the black jacket and midriff top). The graphic treatment of the photo makes the CD look like something from the 80s. I guess it makes me think of an a-ha album jacket. Speaking of a-ha... I heard that they continued to release albums after the one that featured their one big hit, "Take On Me." Has anyone ever heard any of their other music? Stewart? Norway isn't all that far from Finland, so perhaps you'll know about this. So, there's the scoop on the "Hush" bootleg. Hope this helps some of you in making a decision as to whether or not you want to shell out the $24.95. Personally, I'm pleased with my purchase. Peace. I hear ya, Holly. Personally, I wouldn't sweat it too much. When it comes down to how many petty individuals use the boards to work out their free-form hostilities in what they perceive as a safe environment, the VH-1 Sounding Board to Paula is really no different than the bulletin board sponsored by Warner Brothers on their Paula pages. The people who post negative comments about Paula on the boards are really nothing more than a cyber version of the kids in high school who got some kind of temporary fulfillment out of writing distasteful comments about others in bathroom stalls and, for that reason, I suppose we should pity their immaturity and stupidity rather than resent them for the same reasons. Any form of retaliation (even in a positive form) would most likely just fan their fires. Truthfully, I'm glad that those boards exist. If not, the cretins might find their respective ways over here to Harbinger. So, I guess we should just count our blessings. For the time being, anyway, we're spared from their pranks. Peace. I've been so busy lately, I haven't had much time to post, so you've probably all forgotten who the hell I am. Anyway, I would just like to make a few comments. First of all, I'm on this list and a Fiona Apple list, and this list, by FAR, is the tamer and more friendly of the two. Some of you have commented on how it's amazing we haven't just started a huge flamewar, but compared to the constant arguing on the Fiona list, the people on here are so supportive, helpful, and generally nice people. Second, about a week and a half ago, I bought the THIS FIRE piano book. I think it's an excellent buy!!!! It's put out by Hal Leonard, and most of the arrangements are decent. I especially love the arrangements of "Throwing Stones" (oh yeah!!), "Hush, Hush, Hush" (probably my favorite on the album, for some reason, probably the simplicity and the chord structures....hmmmm.....), "Me", and "Nietzche's Eyes". Arrangements for "Tiger" (it's probably as good as you can get), "Cowboys", "Carmen" (same comment as "Tiger"), "Missippi (I'm missing the didjeridoo!!!) and "Feelin' Love" are mediocre, but acceptable. The disappointing thing is, in my opinion, the arrangements of "I Don't Want to Wait" and "Road to Dead" are yucky!! :O) But overall, I think the book is WELL WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, that's about it. Yeah, actually, that's it!!!! Julia :O) ellermus@fortdodge.ia.frontiercomm.net http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/6306 "We should live to love, and not die to hate." - came from some neuron of my cerebrum...... maybe I've heard it somewhere, or maybe I had an instant of a creativity surge..... - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com All footer, all the time...never shaved. ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V2 #163 *******************************
