Hi to all ! I just wanted to let everyone know that Paula is feeling much better and we will be performing 3 free shows on Dec. 21, 22 and 23. If you can get to the venue, there will be no charge for any of the shows. There is one slight caveat...... we are going to be performing on aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. Paula and her band are doing 3 Christmas shows for the troops in the Persian Gulf. The USO asked Paula if she could do the shows for those who couldn't be home for the holidays and she said yes ! We are leaving on Thursday for 28 hours of travel and we land on the deck of the Nimitz to perform our first show. This will be the first of a kind for any of us so it will prove to be a most interesting holiday week for everyone. If all goes to plan, we will arrive back home late Christmas eve. After the holidays we still plan to be hitting the road late January and I hope to see you somewhere out there. If any of you do get to the Persian Gulf, come by the soundboard and say "Hi sailor....." Happy Holidays to all ! Well said, Steve. I agree that this list has become a pretty cool corner in cyberspace and some of the acquaintances and friendships that have grown out of our discussions here are immeasurably valuable. In addition to our on-going interactions on Harbinger, a lot of us have had the opportunity to meet one another at different times over the span of our subscription to Harbinger. In the past year alone, I've run into Steve twice (once at the recording of West 54th Sessions and again at Jones Beach Lilith Fair), Judith (at West 54th Sessions), Chris and his very cool mom (at the Paradise in Boston), Shawnte (at Fleadh and Regis & Kathie Lee) and my pal, the Rockin' Mama, Judy K. (at the Paradise show, where Judy pretended to me my Mom in a ploy she cooked up to get us closer to the stage). If not for Paula's unfortunate bout with the bug and the subsequent postponement of the Beacon show, this year would have also marked my meeting with a long-time list bud and everyone's favorite veterinarian, Jim McNamara. Personally, it has always amazed me how easy it has been to socialize with so many people of so many varied backgrounds whom I would likely have never spoken to if I passed them on the street. And all of it comes from our mutual interest in one artist's music. In fact, some of us have even forged full-fledged friendships from our interactions on this list. And I'm not just talking about cyber-friendships. Some of us actually get together and hang out. Hell, I can't wait for Spring to come so I can get up to Boston and party again with Judy! So, I suppose I'm not surprised that, for the most part, we, the members of Harbinger, don't scorch off one another's eyebrows with weekly flamewars or that very often we can pop off posts dripping with sarcasm without offending or infuriating anyone. Over time, we've gotten accustomed to the quirks and/or neuroses of our fellow list members and because of that we can just enjoy each other's company without worrying about anyone getting pissed off or resorting to petty flames. That's not to say the list hasn't played host to its own share of aberrations now and then. But, fortunately, those folks have unsubbed of their own accord and have simply chosen to remain mute. Either way, I think we've learned some things from interacting with those people and I believe it's safe to say that most of us are truly grateful for their decision to pull out of the conversation. So, hell, yes, Steve.... we all deserve a big ol' pat on the back for being an awesome group of fans. We've had our rough patches, but, by and large, we all get along pretty well. Most of the time we've been able to share our views about music without any fear of harsh judgment or immature sniping. And, most importantly, we've gotten to learn from one another about how Paula's music, in particular, can be interpreted so differently from one person to the next, depending upon each individual's personal life experiences. To me, that is the reason why any artist does what he or she does - to touch people and, in turn, to allow those same people to influence one another's lives. In '98, I'm hoping to meet more of you along the concert trail. I've yet to meet our own benign dictator, His Imperial Highness, Jason Greshes. I missed meeting Paula Jr. at a Philly show earlier this year, so I'd like to shake hands with the brilliant Mr. Bellerose's band teacher next year, too. And, last, but certainly not least, I would like to make a trip back to the land of my youth and make arrangements to hit a concert with my wise and witty compatriot, Spanish. I'd also like to take this opportunity to encourage those of you who generally remain in lurk mode to make an effort to add your thoughts to the mix. I think there are a lot more lurkers on the list than there are regular posters. With Steve's post and now mine, I hope you will abandon any misgivings you might have had in the past about whether or not we would shoot down your thoughts or that your participation in any discussion would be unwelcome. I mean, sure... we love listening to ourselves talk, but it's a lot more interesting when there's some fresh blood in the discussion. So, come on and start taking your turn on the soapbox. We won't throw tomatoes at you. Well... we won't throw them really hard, anyway. ;^) Here's to the prosperity of Harbinger in '98! Peace. First, I'm very glad to hear that Paula is feeling better. She's had a few rough times with her vocal health this year and it's good to know that her "little pink larynx" is back on top of its game. And, even though I wish it was me who was going to be getting a Paula Cole concert for the holidays, I think it's great that she and the band have chosen to go entertain the troops at this time of year. If they can't be home with their families, at least they get the singular pleasure of seeing and hearing Paula at a live concert. Sock it to 'em, Paula! I'd give anything to be there and see their faces when she breaks into "Feelin' Love." :^) Peace.
