I've never been the least bit disappointed in any of the shows I've seen, either when she was with The Story, or on her own. Very strong, clear voice. Amazing stage persona, incredibly charming. An extremely talented guitar player...her chord choices are never straightforward, and (I'm told) her tunings are really tough to figure out (though guitar players seem to love to try :)). If you've done any web searching, you've no doubt found the following web sites: www.jonathabrooke.com www.cs.umd.edu/users/rager/Story There's also a mailing list that you can join through Dave Rager's web site. Her first two CDs were a partnership with Jennifer Kimball called "The Story"...those discs ("Grace in Gravity" and "Angel in the House") featured some incredible harmonies. The two voices blended really well, and Jonatha wrote some beautiful songs to highlight their strengths. Lots of interwoven melodies. Jonatha then broke off on her own, and produced the album "Plumb" a couple years back. It has a slightly different feel than the first two, possibly more mature and confident. Definitely a step in a direction I liked very much. And "Ten Cent Wings" continues her growth. I don't know that there are the kind of "radio-friendly" tracks on the new CD to give her a break like Paula has gotten. But Jonatha is definitely worth a listen!! And if she comes to a venue near you, GO!!! You will *not* be disappointed. I promise. :-) Word has it she'll be touring with a full band early next year... Sorry for the non-Paula content, but I hope this was of interest to a few people. If there is a God, maybe we'll have an even better Lilith Fair next year featuring Paula *and* Jonatha. :-) Dave - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Dec 1997 19:22:59 -0500 From: "Kenn" Subject: (harbinger) Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil - The Movie This post is very loosely related to Paula or her music, so consider = yourself forewarned.... When I first heard that John Berendt*s Midnight In The Garden Of Good And = Evil was being adapted to the big screen, I was overjoyed and have = anticipated anxiously the release of the movie for many months. I even = reread the novel to brush up on events I might have forgotten since first = cracking the cover of Berendt*s brilliant book. I couldn*t wait to see = all of those colorful residents of Savannah depicted before my eyes in = living technicolor. Naturally, it was just icing (and sweet icing, at that) that our Ms. Cole = contributed to the movie*s soundtrack, which is probably the best = soundtrack to be released yet this year. I was even curious as to which = scene would play host to Paula*s rendition of *Autumn Leaves.* (From what = I could tell, the song was never used in the actual movie; it*s just on = the soundtrack.) You get the picture. I was pretty damned excited. So, imagine my dismay when, three days ago, my best friend and I went to = see Midnight at the theater and, thirty minutes into the film, I discovered= that John Lee Hancock (the man responsible for this miserable screenplay = adaptation of Midnight) had done a hack job on Berendt*s wonderful story. = This travesty instantly rocketed into my own Top 5 Worst Movies I*ve Ever = Seen (Stuart Saves His Family still holds the =231 spot.) It might appear to some that the primary reason Hancock got this latest = gig stems from his previous association with Clint Eastwood. A few years = back, the two men worked together on A Perfect World, a film starring the = human tongue depressor, Kevin Costner. Remember that flik? If not, I*m = not remotely surprised. The critics acclaimed the movie, but the viewing = public apparently had had enough of watching Kevin Costner play Kevin = Costner and stayed home. So, now, Hancock has cranked out a film that is little more than a parody = of Berendt*s great book. At some point, it would appear that Hancock = decided he could tell an even better story. If that*s the case, he = grossly overestimated his own meager writing skills. He just should have = stuck to the original story. He couldn*t have missed. Instead, it appears that Hancock shrugged off the fact that Midnight has = been on the NY Times Best Sellers list for over three years now. In = addition to a myriad of flagrant inconsistencies with the impeccable plot = of the book and complete oversights in the development of integral = characters (like Joe Odom and Lee Adler), Hancock chose to believe (as is = also true of most directors and major movie studios) that the viewing = public doesn*t have the mental capacity to digest such a witty and = intellectual story. He also appears to be a firm believer that a movie = can be successful unless it contains a stupid love story, even if it has = nothing to do with the rest of the film. And Clint Eastwood fares no better, in my opinion. His direction of = Midnight*s actors is pretty good, but his obvious attempt to put his = daughter, Alison, out there in the spotlight was just pitiful. So = desperate was Clint to advance Alison*s career that, at some point in the = writing process, Clint apparently even convinced Hancock to create of love = story between Midnight*s narrator, John Kelso (who is really John = Berendt), and Mandy (played by Alison Eastwood). Not only is Mandy*s = character almost inconsequential in the book, but her romance with the = movie*s John Kelso added absolutely nothing to the film. Indeed, it = detracted even further from the film. Additionally, Clint and Hancock = have catapulted her into a supporting actress role. A classic case of = Hollywood nepotism gone bad. Hang your heads, John Lee Hancock and Clint Eastwood. And you, too, = Warner Brothers. You could have made a great movie for us all to enjoy. = Instead, you*ve done nothing more than embarrass yourselves and piss off a = lot of people who shelled out money to see this tripe. Your post was sort of confusing, and I couldn't tell if you did or not. I liked the part where you said that Clint Eastwood does a good job of showcasing the talents of his daughter Alison. I seen her on Hard Copy and I think she is so nice. She is pretty and has nice clothes, so I know she must be good. I'm glad they made a movie out of it, because I heard the story was supposed to be good, but who wants to read a book, right? I heard that Paula Coll sings in the movie. She sings that song, you know, about the Cowboys and how she thinks the man is okay even if he don't help with the dishes and the girl she pays the bills anyway. I seen Paula Coll on the show Entertainment Tonite and she had on a nice dress and she seems nice, but I couldn't believe what I'm going to tell you -- She doesnt shave in her armpits I AM NOT LIEING Can you believe that? Its gross. My sister was going to get the tape of Paula Coll until I said She don't shave in her armpits and she said that's gross- I'm glad you saved me from getting the tape. i don't know why she thinks people will by her tapes if she can't even look good (but she has a nice car, I think). So let me know If I should see it, okay ken? Chris P. (Counting the days till Hanson comes to the mall right Near my house -I'm not lieing its like 8 days and I'm like so nervous. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ End of harbinger-digest V2 #155 *******************************
