My florist is all ready to order the tigerlilies. I called her last week and confirmed that there won't be any problems. The flowers will cost about fifty bucks. I haven't been able to go to the New York Horticultural Society yet, but I called them and they have a large selection of seeds and bulbs to choose from. I'll attend to that next week and, as I mentioned before, will let you know what I manage to pick up. Our own Holly Bolt has generously offered to chip in her own contribution to the gift. Holly has found some garden stones (y'know... those cool rocks with inspirational words carved into them?) and will be sending those off to me soon to include with the gift. A few people have offered to lend their financial support to the gift. That is much appreciated. My only concern is that I don't want to end up with money on my hands after the cost of the gifts have been defrayed. My personal take on this subject is this.... There are a few people in my geographical vicinity who have been among those offering their hard-earned bucks for the gifts. Additionally, I make a pretty good salary myself. I suppose I think it would be easier all the way around if those of us out here in the NYC/New England area who have already offered to pay for the gift just go ahead and cover those costs. It's not that much money, after all. In fact, I was willing to cover all of the costs. The money doesn't matter to me, really. I just thought it'd be nice if Paula could receive a gift from us as a group, regardless of who did or didn't actually pay for it. After all, we're among friends here. :^) If someone has a better solution to this, please do feel free to add your thoughts to this. I'll give another update on this on Friday. By then, I'll have closed on most (if not all) of the arrangements. One last note... If you have messages of thanks or well-wishes that you wish to pass along to Paula, please let me know. Several people have also expressed interest in this. I think it's a great gesture. If you want to e-mail me with your message, please do so privately. Or, if you want to send your message to me via snail mail, contact me and I'll give you my mailing address. That's it for now. More to come soon. Peace. And, furthermore, what is it about them that made me sit up > and take notice? I didn't have time to respond to this myself when I originally posted the question, so here's my list of new finds for '97: Alisha's Attic - I can't wait for Shelley and Karen to put out their next album so that they can come tour North America more extensively. I had the opportunity to see them perform at two Lilith Fair shows this past summer and even got to meet and talk with these two very cool sisters at Jones Beach. Looking forward to seeing them perform a fully plugged-in set at some point. Jen Trynin - I just expounded upon Jen's musical virtues recently, so I won't bother to reiterate. Simply put, she has won me over and I'm looking forward to seeing her perform live at the Beacon just as anxiously as I'm anticipating seeing Paula again. Dar Williams - I know a lot of you folks out there have known about Dar for a while now, but she's a new one for me this year. Just sorry I missed her show at Town Hall in NYC. :^( Jeb Loy Nichols - Jeb's a very recent discovery. Finding Jeb was almost as joyous a day as when I discovered Vic Chestnutt a couple of years ago. Jeb's folk/rock style is beautifully executed. I'm glad to see some of the male solo artists coming back out of the wings. The girlrock thing has been great, but I'm ready to hear from the guys again. Moxy Fruvous - Intelligent, fun-loving and one of the best live acts I've ever seen. Counting on the concert these guys are giving at The Bottom Line on Dec. 31st to make this New Year's Eve as memorable as Paula did for me last year when I saw her at Roseland. So, there's my list of finds. May next year prove as musically fruitful as '97 has been. Peace. Being the consummate musician that she is and not wishing to give her fans anything less than her best, it is understandable that Paula has made the difficult decision to cancel her concert tonite. I hope she is giving her amazing voice a well deserved rest. btw, the recorded info @ Lupo's ( 401-272-5876 ) says that they'll try to re- schedule her concert soon. Keep tuned. I was planning to see her @ Toad's Place in New Haven tomorrow. Any word on that concert yet? Take great care of yourself, Paula! We asked Phil to keep it under wraps, but there's only so much we can do to keep it a secret. I mean, we have to communicate about it somehow and really don't feel like calling everyone on the list by phone. :^) Personally, I feel it's the thought behind the gift that matters. But, then... I've never been much for surprises myself. Peace. I spent the day at the mall with Leahna, getting her first semi-formal outfit, then off we went to RI. BUt it's, ok. I figured that was a good thing because I would be closer to the stage. Then the guy at the door said the show was cancelled because she has a hoarse voice. I thought it was a joke at first. I am so disappointed. I really hope she reschedules. And i hope no other dates got cancelled either.
