Ok, this is what he told me: 1) *Never use a flash* First of all, normal flashes don't reach very far and unless you're very close to the stage your flash will not only be utterly ineffective, but also annoy the audience. Second, without flash the colors of the picture will look more naturally. 2) Use 1600 ASA films - even if they're expensive and the pictures will look a bit grainy. The Paula photographs were taken with a 400 ASA film, the ones on the last page with a 1600 ASA film. I've got some photographs at home from people who still photograph with a 200 ASA or even 100 ASA film (the ones you usually use every day). All you can see on them is a white spot on a black photograph... For shows without spectacular lightshows, 1600 ASA is a definite must. 4) Be aware that your pictures get darker the more you zoom in. 5) Take some time looking for a good photo shop where they develop the pictures themselves and (important!) agree to take some time adjusting the brightness/contrast settings on their machine. The standard settings usually don't work very well for concert photographs. A perfect example is the picture of Paula at the piano where her skin is too bright --. The worst you can do to your photographs is to give them to a shop that sends your film away to a photo lab. That's it. The short version of this is: Use 1600 ASA films, and no flash. I can't remember very well anymore... could it have been "ME"? Ithink it was, but I may be wrong. > and whats the deal with soraya???? i must admit ive never heard of her.. but > them im a stupid american :).... Here in Europe, she's pretty unknown as well. She really should bemore popular in America than over here, and after all, her new CD was released end of October in USA and South America only - there's no European release date yet. I had to order the CD in the USA, via Global Priority Mail (airmail is just too slow... ;-)) > can you give any info on who she is similar > to musically?? She's really different from Paula, but I think the two complementeach other very well. Exactly who will like her and who won't is difficult to say. Most of the people who listen to her saw her first as the opening act for Sting. Between her and Paula's music are worlds. I don't know whether to prefer Paula or Soraya - it depends on my mood. Generally, Soraya's music is for the calmer moments in life. I know of an absolute Heavy-Metal fan who hates all pop music, but he admits that he absolutely loves Soraya... funny... If you want to listen to her, short sound samples can be found on my Soraya page at http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/9017/ I recommend listening to "Mi Dolor", my favorite song. Her studio albums, however, have by far not the power of her live shows. After her "New Pop Festival" concert (which was broadcasted on radio), I got lots of emails from people who once said "Soraya - uh, no!", but after that radio broadcast dashed off to the store the very next day and bought her CD. And BTW, she now won the Festival Award as the top act of that festival. I thought everybody would vote for Meredith Brooks, but she beat Meredith Brooks and Savage Garden and made it no. 1... fantastic! Okay, enough off-topic for today... I posted that there is one available from the company that I bought the Sarah boot from. They do not make the CDs. The boots are usually made outside of the US. This company just sells them and I have no connections to them except that I am a happy customer. I appreciated the post about the person who did not agree with bootlegging concerts. He expressed his opinion in a clear and civilized manner...sadly, that is rare and I respect his opinion and thank him for a well thought out post. My opinion is that I enjoy buying bootlegs. I do not think that bootlegs of live shows that have not been released hurt the performer, since the CDs are usually only bought by rabid fans like myself who would buy Paula's music if she were singing her grocery list. The bootleg versions help me continue to love the music while I am waiting for a new album. (i.e., I loved Alanis Morissette's JLP, but got sick of the songs overplayed on the radio. I got her acoustic "Space Cakes (unplugged little pill)" and fell in love with the songs again so I didn't experience the Alanis burnout so many others have.) The CD bootlegging that I do not agree with is when people tape full albums that are readily available from any store (since that DOES affect royalties) or the practice of bootlegging commercially available CDs and selling them for cut prices (like they do in Estonia. Most CDs here cost about $25 US dollars...the same bootlegged CDs in Estonia are $8.) So that is my standpoint on the bootlegs. Since the live bootlegged material is not commercially available, the artist is not losing money that should be coming to her. When a live album is released, the quality will be much better than any boot, and most people who bought the boot will still support and buy the live album as well. The only way to get money from boots to the artist is to offer live performances through approved sources (i.e., Sarah McLachlan's limited "Live" album and live recordings through her fan club or Prince's (very expensive) albums through his 1800NewFunk.) Again, I do not want to start any arguments on the list. Email me privately if you want to discuss this off the list.
