I would totally agree with your assessment of Jewel v. Happy (duh!). I might even be tempted to agree with your choice of THE KEEP. :-) I think that or RhodeSongs both show her versatility and range of emotions/moods/styles. So, Sharley, now that we've both answered, Kenn much more succinctly than I, find her!! In my opinion it is a very rare thing when you find an artist that sounds as good, or even better live than on a recording. Paula fits this description perfectly. Actually, Paula's sound man Phil did an excellent job mixing in that concrete box of a room! Her voice carried easily over the music, and it was very easy to understand the lyrics to every song. In comparison, Jen Tyrnin lost some intelligibility in that room, because of the bass line, and the echoing of the mid and high range sounds drownding out her vocals at times. However overall this didn't detract from a great performance by her! She was a great opener for Paula, and got the audience moving with her music. If you want an "Official" review of Paula, check out this site at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal(I don't like breaking copyright laws, so I'm not posting it to the list...): http://www.jsonline.com/letsgo/daily/1117cole.stm I sat near the reviewer, and spoke with him for a little while before the performance. He has some interesting points of view, and seemed fairly objective. Although I think he had some of his review written before he heard the concert... ;-) Cheers! In speaking with Jay a while ago (he's paulas drummer and a very good friend of mine) he told me that the record companies don't want her own tunes competing against each other...which makes PERFECT sense! It is obviously working..as evidenced by the success of I don't want to Wait, on the heels of Cowboys! :) paula - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Nov 1997 15:41:35 -0500 (EST) From: Momrox1@aol.com Subject: Re: (harbinger) List Gift for PC -Reply << They also allow you to rent sheep. >> Hey Kenn- Great idea- If I rent some sheep, then my border collie sheep herding dog will stop herding the local children from the ocean's edge. I, too am an old timer on Ecto and share the same feelings on Happy and her music. This is a talent that should definitely be exposed to anyone who enjoys being challenged by music. I can't say enough about her vocal range either...I was another fooled by the fact that this is just one woman! It is quite difficult to recommend a starting place for newbies. I bought "Warpaint" when it was first released and opened it to play on my way home from the purchase. I didn't make it home before I turned around, went back to the store and purchased the rest of the catalog! After the release of Equipoise, Happy did an in-store appearance in a suburb of Detroit. I was lucky enough to drive them around the next day to a radio station appearance and another in-store :) Both Happy and Kevin are wonderful, down to earth people that deserve all the best. Check out one of the nine cd's by Ms. Rhodes, but don't be surprised if you find yourself hooked! Just a note about Taja Sevelle... new CD is 'Toys of Vanity' and features 'I&I' and 'Us' and is well worth the $20 or less. I got it over the weekend at Camelot and I am in love with it. Then again I am the one who listens to a million different artists.... :) Anyway I don't know how to describe her sound but I go to sleep with the CD in. The lyrics are beautiful and the songs seem to be calming to me. So check her out.... she is on 550 music from the Sony family and you can find clips of her on sony's music site at www.sony.com.... Thanks to the reviews on the list, I pretty much knew what to expect, although this kind of took away the element of surprise. I have to say that when she came out to sing La Vie en la Rose (or whatever it's called) in that sleek black dress and blonde wig, a unique form of drag I thought, I have to say it was so hot that even I was turned on. The place went crazy! The most surprising and delightful part of the show had to be Jen Trynin. I have to say that when the rest of you list-ers discussed her work a few weeks ago, I hardly paid much attention. What a mistake. I really really enjoyed not only songs and music, but her performance as well. I immediately bought her new CD. And now I'm hooked! Subject: (harbinger)Sarah Mclachlan Really sorry that i haven't been participating in the list...just reading it...and the first time that i have something to say - it's not even about my most favourite artist. Paula Cole. Just a quick note - i just came back from Sarah's concert in Vancouver B.C. Canada, and she was amazing! She sang for a full two hours - and played a range of songs from Vox to Sweet Surrender. The final song was the most amazing - "angel". She was surrounded by candles, and brought out her dog "rex" who lounged by the piano bench quietly, as she sang. I do have to say, on another note, reguarding Paula, that Sarah had received a bouquet of roses...she seemed sooo pleased. I'm sure that Paula will really love the Tiger Lilies that a bunch you are going to give to her! It's a great idea. Just wish that i was the one to think of it! Also - just watched a video of Peter Gabriel's "secret tour live" show. Paula was stunning and incredible. Well worth the money to buy the CD!
