First of all, does anyone else think that they're releasing Paula's singles way too late for retail? By the time "Cowboys" or "I Don't Want To Wait" were released, I've already started to grow tired of the radio playing so much. I am glad however, that "Wait" is doing quite well on the Billboard Top 100 Singles chart. She's up to #15 and still climbing. Other notable news is that about 2-3 weeks ago, her album went platinim, meaning it's sold over 1 million copies. I'm pretty happy for her and feel that it's all well deserved, I just wish that radio didn't overkill her songs. They have a tendency to do that. For example, I used to love Jewel and Duncan Sheik, but now it's like, everytime I hear them, I shut it off or change the station. Well, that's it for now. Take care and hope to hear from you soon. I also wanted to let you guys know that I'll only be on here another month. I'm pretty bummed about that but due to irreconcilable differences with my partner (I guess that's ex-partner now) we're both going to be moving out and I won't have access to a computer until I save my pennies and get over a depression. Don't worry though, I'll have my Paula CD's on repeat and will be inspired once again to get through this screwed up time. Well, sorry about adding the personal stuff. It just kinda' all came out at once. Give me some insight. Either Irene > or Kenn. Oh, okay... twist my arm and make me talk about Happy Rhodes... ;^) Happy is an artist from Poughkeepsie, New York. Her name was originally Kimberly Tyler Rhodes, but her family and friends always called her Happy and, eventually, she had her name changed legally. Happy has been writing songs since shortly after receiving a guitar from her mother, at age 11. Some of her most incredible songs were written before she turned 16. Her career started while she was working as an apprentice engineer at Cathedral Sound Studios in Rensselaer, New York (a suburb of Albany). She learned how to operate recording equipment and, at the urging of the studio owner (who gave her free studio time), she recorded her first four albums on her own. Then, the studio owner introduced Happy to Kevin Bartlett in 1986. Together, they have collaborated on Happy's other CDs under the Aural Gratification label. Kevin has done work of his own on the label, as well. To date, Happy has released NINE albums and almost no one has heard of her (except all those folks, like me, over on the Ecto list). Last year, when I was still subscribed to Sarah McLachlan's list, I sent out a bunch of holiday sampler tapes that featured a couple of Happy's tunes (one was an awesome rendition of "O Holy Night"). Although Happy's music has been referred to as "goth", I have never really seen that influence as a big part of her work. Her sound is entirely unique, as is her voice. The themes of her songs often lean toward space, death (even suicide) and fantasy images. But, she's not a new age artis, either. A lot of her songs deal with personal relationships, too. I would have to say her sound is probably an acquired taste for some people. My roommate, for example, doesn't like Happy's music at all. Even though she admits Happy has a phenomenal vocal range, she feels her music is just too mellow and sad. I suppose you really just have to listen to it yourself. Happy's voice and her range are unlike any I've ever heard anywhere. Someone ridiculous person (I think it was on Tara MacLean's mailing list) recently said that he felt Jewel had a similar (if not better) vocal range. Not even close. Jewel, while a nice enough girl who plays nice enough songs, only wishes she had the vocal control that Happy possesses. When I first heard Happy sing, I thought it was two people singing and that I had misinterpreted the name "Happy Rhodes" as being one person. I figured that it just *had* to be a duo - a man and a woman. Well, obviously, I was wrong. It all comes out of one woman's throat. The best example of Happy's ability to move smooooooothly from one octave to another is in the song "Temporary and Eternal" (especially the version that appears on "The Keep"). You would *swear* that it's two people! Just remarkable. As I mentioned, I saw Happy perform live last March down at the Tin Angel in Philly. I half feared she'd be a young moonbeamish flower child based on some of her musical themes. Turned out I was very wrong. She's a strikingly beautiful 32-year-old woman who was funny, witty, engaging and surprisingly "normal" despite having been a rather depressed loner in her early years (which shows in her early music). Spanish writes: > ohhh i swear kenn.. i am tempted to fly somewhere to see this woman > live.... If you hurry, you can come see her out here in NYC this coming Thursday, the 20th. :^) > i saw on another mailing list that happy is doing some shows this fall in > the philadelphia area with another artist, but i cant remember who it is... Probably Project Lo. That's who is performing at The Bottom Line in the Village next week and Happy is appearing with them. She did some vocal work on a few of the songs on their new album. > i kinda thought she was a bowie fan when i heard her sing life on mars > (though not the bowie song ....). Yeah, she's definitely a fan of David. I can totally see her relating to the Ziggy Stardust material, too. In addition to Bowie, Happy is also fond of the band, Yes. She does a wonderful medley of Yes tunes (which appears on her last album, _The Keep_, which is a compilation of rarities. My favorite Happy album yet. Happy has also mentioned being a big fan of Queen, Kate Bush, Bach and good ol' Peter Gabriel. Hmmm.... sounds like a lot of the awesome musicians listen to Peter. :^) Check her out, folks. There is usually a lot of debate among Happy's fans as to which album a newbie should buy first. I'm in the minority, I think, because I would have to say "The Keep" would be the one to start off with. It gives a great overview of the breadth of Happy's music and it's just an awesome CD, in general. If you have any other curiosities about Happy, check out this URL: http://miso.wwa.com/~vickie/happy/faq.html It's a Happy Rhodes FAQ and it will give you further information about ordering her music, what her background is, etc. Right now, all of us Happy fans are turning cartwheels because, after a looooooong hiatus, Happy has finallly signed with a new label. The record company is Samson Music, which is a brand new label housed in Omaha, Nebraska (of all places). This is great (okay... AWESOME!!!) news because this means Happy has found a label that will honor her wishes to be true to her music. In the past, she has run into roadblocks similar to those I understand were met by Ani DiFranco when trying to keep her music from being commercialized. Now, it seems she has found a great working relationship and her fans are going to get to hear new stuff from her and get to see her tour again!!! I am a happy boy. :^) Peace. Not really. I mean, the release of her singles seems to be on par with the release of other artists' singles. The main reason there is usually a delay from the radio release of a song and it's subsequent appearance on the racks in retail stores is because the label is hoping that people will hear the song on the radio and go looking for the song in the stores. If they get there and find the single they've fallen in love with, there's a good chance that's what they'll buy and singles usually only cost a few bucks. But, if they get to the store and find there is no single, but only the full-length CD, there's a better chance they'll buy the $16 or $17 CD. They're just trying to feather their beds. Can't say I blame 'em even though it does make me crazy sometimes. Naturally, I'm not usually terribly interested in the single for the single's sake. I've heard that song many times before the single is released in stores because I've already bought the full-length CD. No.. I go crazy because I want to hear the B-side, which is often something previously unreleased, a live rendition or a demo. But, I don't think big record labels really give a rat's derriere that I'm waiting to get my hands on that stuff. They want to make some money! :^) > I am glad however, that "Wait" is doing quite well on the Billboard Top > 100 Singles chart. She's up to #15 and still climbing. That's very good news. I was watching VH-1 the other day and saw that "IDWTW" was up one place from # 6 to # 5. Wonder if she'll make it to #1? I think "Cowboys" only made it to #2, didn't it? At least Jewel's "Foolish Games" finally dropped out of VH-1's #1 spot. I am beyond sick of that song and the video featuring the black stallion with extensions in its mane. :^P > Other notable news is that about 2-3 weeks ago, her album went > platinim, meaning it's sold over 1 million copies. I want to run this one by you all to get your input before going out to do it. I still think giving Paula flowers at the Beacon show is a pretty good idea. I've spoken with my florist who has assured me that she can get some very nice tigerlilies from South America. So that's cool. I would just place the order and pick them up on my way to the show that night. Someone (I think it was Steve (a/k/a Honoku)... I'm not sure) recently suggested giving Paula's flower seeds, as well. I liked that idea a lot then and have since come to really like the idea. I also think some flower bulbs might be nice. A couple of days ago, I was dubbing Paula's appearance on World Cafe for National Women's Day for a friend of mine and heard Paula discussing "Me" with the host. The host asked Paula about the reference to "a dark cold female." Paula responded by saying that she feels Winter is a very feminine time. It's a period of gestation - the plant might appear to be dead, but the roots never actually die. She also mentioned that, as a gardening maven, she has noticed that the plants that can make it through the Winter tend to be that much stronger when Spring comes. Hearing her talk about those ideas made me think that giving her flower seeds would be a great idea. All of that discussion was about an idea in "Me," which Phil has recently told us will be released on the radio and on video just after the new year. And we know that she's a self-admitted fan of gardening. Another reason I think seeds would be great is because Paula will then be able to think of us when she plants them and as they grow. I think that'd be pretty cool knowing that some part of us is growing in Paula's garden and that something her fans gave her is making her days a little brighter. So, that's where I am with the idea of a gift right now. There are a few seed packs and bulbs in particular I have in mind. Rosemary for remembrance (thanks, Shakespeare!), forget-me-nots (along the same lines...), catnip (for her feline roommates) and crocuses (as a harbinger of Spring). I'm planning a trip over to the New York Horticultural Society tomorrow to check out what they have in stock. I'll give you all an update when I get back in the office. Your feedback on this has been great. I'd love to hear more from you. And, as someone else mentioned, mum's the word, Phil Sullivan. ;^) Peace. Wow, what a cool idea that is! Good for Emmylou and The OR Boys! It's great to see some other luminaries (other than Sting and Don Henley) get out there to green up our environment. They have such powerful voices in our community that it seems only right that they should lend them to such worthwhile causes. Environmentalism is desperately in need of committed individuals who will walk their talk. This project reminds me a bit of a company I've done business with in the past called Rent Mother Nature. Their company allows you to "rent" various trees. Whatever fruit, nuts or sap (for maple syrup) the tree yields in the year that you've rented it is yours. You're guaranteed a certain amount (just in case a cold snap messes with the orange groves in Florida, I guess), but if your tree goes over the agreed upon base amount, you get whatever the excess is. Pretty cool deal. They also allow you to rent sheep. You get whatever wool they shear from them, which is then made into a blanket or whatever to be shipped to you or another party. (That one in particular goes against my views on animal treatment, but I guess it's not like they're renting baby seals to be made into fur coats or anything.) ;^) Thanks for the information, Michael. Maybe that's what I'll get my banjo-pickin', toe-tappin' parental units for Christmas this year. They're HUGE fans of the Oak Ridge Boys. :^) Peace. A singer/songwriter out of NY, she started out with acoustic guitar/keyboards and has since evolved into synth/ambiant stuff, but still really wonderful. She's somewhat spooky, ethereal, and yet really down to earth. She's got some really great mood music. Her singing range is nothing short of amazing, singing right along with the likes of both Kate Bush AND David Bowie (yes, those LOW, low notes!) All of her albums have merit, but I would suggest RhodeSongs as an overall intro, sort of like a "greatest hits" or "best of" but with some live, acoustic stuff.
