I guess, from Kenns posts, that I'll be wearing my This Fire tee, custom designed by Kenn :) Can't wait. Saw Fiona last night from the sixth row and she was incredible. She's such a sad person sometimes, though. When she sang that song, Sullen Girl, about being raped at a young age, I cried. I could see my daughter, Leahna, glancing over at me but the tears would not stop. On to Salem MA tonight to see Richard Thompson. I picked up a copy of Gun Shy Trigger Happy yesterday afternoon. = Before listening to the disc, I was steeling myself for another disappointm= ent. I=27m not hesitant about checking out new artists, but I=27ve been = burned so many times now that I=27m gun shy (pardon the pun). That never = came into play once I started listening to Jen=27s new CD. I played it = three times back-to-back before going to bed. I*m quite elated today (in spite of the inclement weather here in NYC) = because I was just wondering a couple of days ago who was going to keep me = busy until Paula releases her next album. I haven*t found another new = artist or band this exciting since discovering Paula or the band, Better = Than Ezra (whose debut album was incredible, even though their follow-up = was sorely disappointing). Check Jen out if you haven*t already. Her music is something entirely unto = itself, however, I made some notes while listening to the CD last night = which are basically just my own interpretations of what other contemporary = influences I hear in her songs. Any additional thoughts from you on what = or who you hear in her work would be most welcome. Also, if anyone knows for certain that Jen will be opening for Paula at = the Beacon Theatre show, please confirm it for me. Otherwise, I need to = find out when she*ll be performing on her own in this area. Here goes.... Go Ahead =22Go Ahead=22 has elements of songs like Everclear=27s *Santa Monica,* = Stone Temple Pilots=27 =22Lady Picture Show=22 and Better Than Ezra=27s = =22Good,=22 with just enough of the upbeat attitude of a Bangles tune to = keep it from being as post-grunge as that. Getaway (February) Probably my third favorite song on the album - definitely in the top five. = Vocally and musically, the sound of the verses are reminiscent of Squeeze = while the chorus has a Carly Simon quality. I can even hear some Crowded = House in this one, too. If I The lyrics and delivery of this song give the feeling of a good mixture of = Christine McVie and Annie Lennox. I like =22If I=22 a lot, but I think = the main reason I don=27t love it at this point is probably because I=27ve = been listening to so much Fleetwood Mac lately. Writing Notes I=27ve often wondered what Edie Brickell=27s music might sound like if she = sang with some kind of emotion instead of that blissed out, granola girl = sound she=27s fond of. Now I think I know. =22Notes=22 also makes me = think of Sophie B. Hawkins=27 *As I Lay Me Down* in some ways. Everything =22Everything=22 is very good. Certain aspects of Jen=27s vocals on the = verses of this song remind me of Sade, but, there=27s a definite rock = influence, too. Disparate as it seems to compare Sade and Hole, there are = moments in this song that are almost like soft version ofCourtney Love in = *Doll Parts.* Bore Me My hands-down favorite song from this album. I would love to hear this = remixed. What a killer club song this would make=21 If you=27ve ever = heard Duran Duran=27s =22White Lines=22 or Alisha=27s Attic=27s =22White = Room=22 you have an idea of what this song is musically. There are also = aspects of Prince=27s =22Kiss,=22 especially in Jen=27s vocals. Love Letter The sound is similar to =22If I,=22 except there=27s this awesome Cheap = Trick/Heart classic rock vibe to it, as well. Washington Hotel Some parts of the musical arrangement of this song sound a lot like = Garbage=27s =22Stupid Girl.=22 Lyrically, Jen comes really close to = capturing the dark, vengeful, half-mad mood of Stabbing Westward=27s = stuff. If you saw the movie, Kissed, the idea conveyed in this song might = bring back the images of the film=27s final scene. I Resign Jen=27s voice and delivery remind me very much of Roberta Flack in this = song. The =22Okaaay...=22 part of the chorus totally makes the song. I Don=27t Need You At first listen, I didn=27t think this song was very good. In fact, I = hated it. Then I listened to it a couple more times and it grew on me. = Starts off as jazzy as Suzanne Vega, but the song goes rock at the end (in = addition to a really nice rock guitar and drum portion in the middle of = the song, too). A bit like Fiona Apple=27s =22Slow Like Honey.=22 Around It Upbeat tempo of this song, again, is akin to Squeeze, but it also has the = rockgirl feel of some of Sleater-Kinney=27s music. Under The Knife My second favorite song on the album (and it=27s a very close second to = =22Bore Me=22). For the mood of the song=27s lyrics and delivery, Jen = dips into the dank font of Trent Reznor and it works so, so well. The = song has such incredible Bauhaus goth/gloom rock (remember gloom rock?) = tones. The song ends with an instrumental/vocalization portion that = echoes vintage Eurythmics. Rang You And Ran Another really cool song. Very sweet ideas, lyrically. The song sounds = as bleak as any Blue Rodeo song and Jen=27s voice is as soft and heart-wren= ching as Janis Ian=27s. OK....I*ve made reference to several artists/bands in trying to convey the = sound Jen puts out there, but in no way do I mean to infer that her music = is derivative. Like I said before, her sound is entirely her own. It*s = just that I can hear those elements in her work. Others out there might = hear completely different influences. Such is the beauty of art interpreta= tion. :=5E) Whatever the case, do yourself a favor and give her a listen. Definitely = some really great stuff. Peace. Jen: Jen was wonderful opening up for paula at the houston show......i desparately wanted to get her cd, but had no extra money...i regret not bringing any now, but for some reason, i knew not of an opening act....now it makes me mad that she didn't even get recognition on the ticket!!! in any case, although her and her entire band had the flu (as she mentioned numerous times...hehe...she said that everyone up front would become ill soon, and when she opened up...she goes "we're going to play a little rock music for you all"....i just found that funny of an artist to label their own music although i think she was playing a paradox..in any case...........).....i loved their style....slightly mellow...but incredibly rocking at times....it was a lovely accoustic set..i'd kill to hear a normal show (meaning that accoustic is abnormal..i have no idea where that came from...........ah well) HOUSTON< TX SHOW!!!! okay, here's the dealyo....we got to the place around 7pm...and checked it out..walked around back to see Paula's (i'm assuming) lovely red tour bus...though it could've been Jen's..i'm not sure.....anyway...we went to an awful pizza hut with the worst service in the world....(cutting to the point...) we returned and found our seats easily..the venue was beautiful..i loved the dresses in the set...though i've still yet to find the meaning in them............. Jen came on, and they did a wonderful set as already mentioned.....there was a short intermission...in which i walked out to go check out the shirt they had..i totally wanted the tank top with the horse on it but as i've mentioned i had no money :( so i came back inside and waited for the show to begin...now, i regret not bringing a pen to right down the setlist to share with you all.....because the night was somewhat of a blur from there on...it was absolutely stunning...i can tell you what songs she did...but not in any particular order...oh, by the way, it was hillarious..i can't remember which song....but she was trying to fix her microphone..it would fall while she played piano and after a song she said "these fucking microphones are always going limp on me....." actually, maybe it wasn't that funny..but i found it funny.......annnnyway REMEMBER THAT THESE AREN'T IN ORDER Hitler's son i am so ordinary (i LOVE this song...sorry just had to say that... :) bethlehem (alltime fave...since i can relate..at this point in my life..it sux) happy home (dedicated to her mother.......and she also said that although this song at first caused trouble...she and her mother were now friends....) tiger where have all the cowboys gone (it was interesting that when she said "you go have a beer" she acted as if she was shooing him away to have a beer and then when he turned around she flipped him off......everyone cheered......though i'm not sure for the right reason..who knows who truly understood..in any case..i loved what she did with the mask :) throwing stones carmen ( i do remember that this was for the encore...she played some guitar too...it was lovely...though her form was slightly deranged.....i loved it :) mississippi road to dead me (another fave) feelin' love (this song gives me the shivers....) hush hush hush (introduced it as a song for her friend that died......she sang the parts that peter did on the album..for some reason i assumed she'd sample them in...but that doesn't matter..it was beautiful) i don't want to wait (another encore song) Joleen (not sure if i spelled this right...she introduced it "this is the last song and it's for Dolly Parton cuz i love her" it was a beautiful song..and i love the voice percussion she does with it....) ~~~~`` okay, i believe i left out a song..but i can't recall what it was.....she was wearing a lovely red dress and her ever-so-kewl black boots....and her hair was in pigtails....i found it to be incredibly stunning...her stage precense was emmense!!!! i absolutely loved the show....before seeing it...i always thought that Leah Andreone had the best stage precense etc...but now she fallls a close, yet distant second to Leah....the show was soooo intense...... after the show, we walked out and hung around out front for awhile...then decided to go to the back door where there were three teenage girls and a man and woman waiting..........after approximately an hour of freezing our butts off in 40 degree weather, and my father nagging me for us to go.....someone announced that paula had just left in a limo from the front of the building....i didn't believe them so i walked around front myself only to find that it was radio winners that had left in the limo.....thank goodness!!!! my dad now said it was time to go (for the hundredth time mind you) and the couple once standing at the door finally left..now it was just us and the other three teenage girls....plus numerous roadies.....her drummer came out to the bus and signed stuff for the girls...i was too shy to approach and not knowing him personally nor have been introduced..made me too uncomfortable...... we waited for another half an hour..(i jumped around flinging my sweater arms about like a mad woman...but in any case ...."i am carrying my voice") finally, out walks paula and her guitarist...she was bundled up in warm clothes a long woolen coat, wool socks, and a wool cap concealing all her hair.....she was carrying her bag/box/caboodle type thing with her......the girls walked up to her....asked for autographs etc...then they began talking about rockfest97 so i chimed in..she commented on how "the women thought it to be another woodstock, except it wasn't because they would take their shirts off and men started grabbing them..it was awful" in any case..we talked for awhile....then the three girls left...and i sort of stood and stared, in a daze....(my father stood back about fifty feet for no reason...) she asked if i wanted her to sign anything..and my first thought was that i didn't want to bug her with it..but i obliged..shook her hand and gave her my ticket stub.....she signed it "much joy, paula cole." then gave it back to me.....we then talked..i complimented her on the show and the two previous i'd seen.....then one of the girls came running back and said "i could never forgive myself for not giving paula cole a hug" so paula said it was sweet adn put down her stuff and hugged her....then she left and paula and i talked more about various things and i gave her the letter i wrote to her and she thanked me.........then i told her to stay warm..and she told me to also...then i began to turn to walk away (regretfully) and she stepped forward and hugged me.....it felt so good.....besides the warmth...but that i didn't have to ask for it...i'm not normally affectionate or anything......and having someone you care so much about hug you..it gives you the greatest feeling...we then parted..and i walked with my father to our car and relayed the story...then he looked behind us and said..."yeah, like she's not behind us" and hell if i knew..she was walking behind us to the university hotel.....they walked up the stairs to the hotel and turned to wave..i felt like an idiot for skipping down the street..but not as dumb as the girl who screamed "oh my god, i just fucking hugged paula cole" i'm not that loudmouthed...in any case..it was an extraordinary night that i'll never forget.........this makes meeting two people i felt something strong towards...it's better with each time..i hope to meet her again..i can only wonder what she thought of my letter.... was anyone else there????!!?!?!?!!!
