Hey, all !! Sorry to have held out on you, folks. However, I wasn't really holding out on you. I just haven't been in the office for a week and a half, so I haven't had an opportunity to fill you in. Nevertheless, tickets for Paula's show at the Beacon went on sale this morning, Thursday, Nov. 6th at 10:00 a.m. VIP seats are #35, the rest are $25. I went up to the Beacon box office early this morning and scored mine (10th row center left!!) and those were the best available from what the Beacon holds back for itself. So, at long last, I will finally get to meet our fellow subscriber, Jim McNamara (a/k/a robovet, a/k/a Jimmy Mac) after having missed him this past February at Paula's show at Toad's Place. Actors want to direct. And director Clint Eastwood wants to sing. The husky-voiced tough guy will warble the Johnny Mercer-penned "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" on the soundtrack to the Warner Bros. film "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." Eastwood joins k.d. lang, Paula Cole and Alison Krauss as artists performing on the soundtrack to the picture, which stars Kevin Spacey, John Cusack and Eastwood's daughter, Alison. Lang's version of "Skylark" is being promoted to radio and will be used to tout the disc's Nov. 18 arrival. Holly Bolt _____________________ Holly Bolt wrote: > > Howdy! At long last, some exciting news about the above-referenced topic.... I've been digging for this information for the past two days and finally just got the scoop on what song Paula is singing on the _Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil_ soundtrack. The song, indeed, is a very well-known Johnny Mercer tune called "Autumn Leaves." Trust me, you *all* have heard this song before. Even if it was only over the Musak in an elevator when you were seven years old. The song was first released in 1959 for a film called _Hey Boy! Hey Girl!_ (never heard of it). The lyrics were originally written in French, but Paula sings them in English. Here they are: "Autumn Leaves" The falling leaves Drift by the window The autumn leaves Of red and gold I see your lips The summer kisses The sun-burned hands I used to hold Since you went away The days grow long And soon I'll hear Old winter's song But I miss you most of all my darling When autumn leaves start to fall I really love this song. How appropriate for this time of year (especially considering my choice in Halloween garb). By the way... my source had an advance copy of the soundtrack and played Paula's track for me over the telephone. How awesome was that?? I had a big ol' smile on my face for the whole five minutes the song played in my ear. Let me assure you, folks, Paula's performance is BEAUTIFUL!! The song, which was recorded about month ago at Sear Sound, definitely showcases Paula's jazz background (as is true of the rest of the songs on the CD). The accompanying instruments on "Autumn Leaves" are bass, guitar and accordian. I can't wait for the 18th!! This song is just what I was hoping to hear from Paula. Soft, sentimental... it's just beautiful. A definite must for your Paula collections. Peace. I don't remember exactly what I thought when I first heard TF. I hadn't bought the album before seeing Paula perform the songs live at Roseland last Winter. I had only listened to Harbinger before that. If anything, I think I probably thought something liike "Wow... the CD is great, but she's even better live." > What were your favorite songs then Definitely "Throwing Stones," "Me" and "Mississippi." > and what are your favorite songs now? "Feelin' Love," "Mississippi," and "Me" (My faves are still mostly on Harbinger, though ("Ordinary," "The Ladder," "Saturn Girl," "Oh, John"). > Any songs you didn't like then and really like now? Yeah.. "Carmen". Couldn't get into at first, but then I started singing it and learned to appreciate it a lot more. > Any lyrics you just couldn't figure out? Not anymore. Although I had a time of it for the first couple months of owning the CD. Now, I have 'em down pat. The one that always killed me was the line from "Throwing Stones" that has stumped everyone for months. Turns out the somewhat nonsensical line is "you manipulate me with your reli-Catholic shit." The emphasis goes: re-LI'-ca-THOL'-ic SHIT' I finally had to break down and ask Phil about that one at one of the concerts last Winter. It was either ask or admit myself to Bellevue. ;^) Another rough one for me was the line from "Feelin' Love" that goes "Am I Barry White? Am I Isis?" That one had me chasing my tail for a few weeks, too. I swear, I was going to all those concerts and spending a big part of the time there just watching Paula's mouth trying to figure out what the hell she was singing. It finally paid off. :^) Peace. I was certain there'd be a line around the block by the time I arrived. > until reading your post i was in the dark about Paula in NY shows. Seems we all were. Last I'd heard, there were going to be two shows - one on 12/2 and the other on 12/3. I've been calling the Beacon every single day to get updates. I'm damned near on a first name basis with the woman at the box office. She just kept telling me to call back in a day or two. > as soon as i read about it i went down to ticket master, around 3 > PM. the middle was sold. Wow! That was fast. I called TicketBastard after I got my tiks just to check and see how fast the show was selling. The guy I talked to said they still had a lot of seats, but the best he could offer me then (I think it was around noon ET) was Row C, Seats 26 and 28. Those are waaaaaay over on the right side of the auditorium. So, it sounds like the center seats sold out in less than two hours. I would suggest to anyone still interested in attending that you shoot for something toward the front of the first balcony. The Beacon is a cool venue and those seats are really quite good if you can still get them. As it gets closer to the day of the show, perhaps we should figure out who will be there and whether or not we should go in on a small gift for Paula from the list. We've been along for the ride for quite a while now. Seems appropriate that we should make her last show (as far as we know it's her last show of the tour) one to remember us by.
