O K I'd like to be one of the people to talk TO you...that is if you'd be open minded and LISTEN....Now i don't know you, and i'm not here to cause an argument...we're all adults here, yes? ok....... A L T E R N A T I V E : existing or functioning outside the established cultural, social, or economic system. Your original message said (didn't save it, so this isn't verbatim) something to the effect of...whoever heard of hip-hop/rap as alternative?...a lot of us think that that art form IS an alternative (see also "varied")to the SAME established and repetitive music that clutters up many of the airwaves. The word "alternative" used to mean something when describing music (remember "progressive"), but its been used out of context so many times that in radio station lingo, it now describes popular music...it used to mean something.... Now, when you say you've heard "of them, not heard them." None of those artists? Not even Queen Latifah? Doesn't that bother you? Are you content with hearing names of artists but not willing to come out of your comfort zone for 5 minutes to even check out NEW (to you, if you'd be open) artists expressing their experiences to people who are refusing to listen to their stories? Eventhough you state that your intent was "NOT to say that h-h/r is worthless music", your original message was so short, it CAME OUT as short and incendiary and while i do respect your and all others to listen to their music of choice, you came off as closed off to the remote possibility that you could possibly like ONE h-h/r song...which is (h-h/r)by the way, a HUGE catalog of music. Now you know what they say about ASSuming, but i'm going to go out on a limb here, and if i'm wrong, i'm sorry in advance...i'm going to assume that you have NOT sought out h-h/r music...when something that, in your mind, or your UNDERSTANDING of what you THINK h-h/r is, that you Turn it off and mutter to yourself, "god i hate rap." and completely dismiss the song before you've even given it a chance...Let me educate you, if you'll allow me to...Do you own, or think you could get access to "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got" Sinead O'Connor's 2nd cd? (If you would indulge me, perhaps you could go to a pre-listening cd store and try this experiment...think of it as a science project)This is an exercise in "what is hip-hop anyway?" (Are you still there?)the song, "I am stretched on your grave" (by sinead) has what is known as a hip-hop beat...I used this song as an example, hoping it may be palatable to your "skid row / pavorotti" tastes... Now...do you HATE this song? did you listen to it more than once? Did you find yourself focusing on the need to shut it off? Did you even, god forbid, find yourself moving a little to the BEAT? (see "dance")Eventhough you said your intent wasn't to insult the art form, your original post came off as CLOSED MINDED and DISMISSIVE.Now i do understand what it's like to be "in the mood for a particular music"...but i also know its fun to mix it up for a while...Now i don't know if you consider yourself yo be openminded, but i ASSume you might be, listening to Paula...If you've given h-h/r a chance in '97, and still don't find ANY of it enjoyable, i'm sorry...you're missing out on great beats and the poetry of individuals who's experiences may be nothing like any you're familiar (see "comfortable") with...(but wouln't it be nice to get to know someone--an artist, thru music-- different than you? Or they may be more similar to you than you expected...how are you going to know if you don't open yourself to the experience?gotta go out dancing now...anyone wishing to respond privately--to not clog up the paula site--feel free at: snappysally@hotmail.com otherwise feel free to post if there are any of you want to express...for others to see thanks for listening mb >------------------------------ >To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: >unsubscribe harbinger > >Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: >http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html >For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com > ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 12:55:49 +0200 From: sstewart@NTCGEN01HE.ntc.nokia.com (Stewart Steven NTC/INP-He) Subject: (harbinger) Kenn & Various Albums (Cherry/Myles/Mari I just have to say again how much I enjoy reading Kenn's posts...always gives me something to think about. Also, thanks to Kenn for the Chart position info. How GREAT of her to debut in the top 20!!!!!!!!! Way to go! Now if only WB would update her site to include the IDWTW video... Other music news.... Alanah Myles currently only has the single out here now with three to four cuts on it. I haven't heard it, but it doesn't appear to be doing well. I loved her first album and didn't like the next two albums she released at all. Her song choices just weren't as strong. The cover of the single is also very "slut" with all the wonderbra, bent over so you can see my cleavage come hitherness you can imagine. I actually almost bought it. I thought I saw Nenah Cherry's "Man" album at Tunnel Records last week at the train station. I'll stop by today and see if it was the full album or just a single. I ran into another guilty pleasure last week when I purchased the best of "Martika." Sorry, guys, but I loved her first two albums. I especially liked her collaborations with Prince on the Martika's Kitchen album...at that time I had just survived a collision with a semi that had done an illegal Uturn on the freeway and used it while doing my physical therapy. Anyway, the greatest hits has lots of remixes and radio versions of her songs. Fun stuff. Wonder what she is doing now? "Grease" on Broadway? :) If there are any Annie Lennox fans out there, look for her special Medusa album (blue instead of red.) It has two CDs...the full Medusa plus a special live in Central Park album with nine cuts...Money Can't Buy It, Legend in my Living Room, Who's that Girl (REALLY different version), Chill in My Heart, Little Bird, Broken Glass, Here Comes the Rain Again, Why, and a new studio version of Something So Right that Paul Simon rerecorded from the Medusa album. He sings and plays on this version. This was released last year, but is being closed out, so I doubt you will be able to get this after the new year. And believe it or not, Samantha Foxx is still recording and was just recently in the news here. Something about suing some old guy (husband? manager? I didn't pay much attention to it) for something or another. She is still just as chesty as before. yet another guilty pleasure...Vanessa Williams was mentioned is the aforementioned post as well. She has a WONDERFUL new album if you enjoyed the music from "The Sweetest Days." It's called "next." I'm not crazy about the first three songs, but the rest of the album has some great sappy adult contemporary ballads. One last recommendation is Amanda Marshall. Great voice. Acoustic Pop. Her "Birmingham" song reminds me of Paula's writing...lots of storytelling, slice of life. It may be a little too "pop" (strong hooks, pop music structure) for some, but she's quite talented and I love the whole album, not just a few cuts. You can even get all of the guitar chords to the songs on her album at one fan's well done website. That's all for now. Okay, if I offended and sounded closeminded, I'm sorry. But it seems that you're taking things to a level where they never meant to be and are going a bit overboard. Yes, I have Sinead's album--I have all of them, in fact. And I love every one of them. No, I don't feel bad about not listening to those artists mentioned. I'm sure I have dozens of artists in my collection that you've probably never heard of or listened to either. That's the beauty of diversity--there's so much of it. Unfortunately, we've only so much time on this earth and most of mine is doing something OTHER than listening to the radio or spending hours at a store at a listening station. Given that limitation, I'd prefer to spend what little time I do have listening to stuff that I KNOW will give me joy and that I can sing/hum/move along to. If that is being closeminded, so be it. Does that mean that I'm closed to learning about new people? No. Does that mean if a friend says "You've GOT to listen to this new song/artist!" that I won't? No. Again, a limited amount of time doesn't afford me the opportunity to know everything that's out there. Does that mean, however, because a few people are getting upset at one of my comments that I'm going to run out and listen to all those listed to keep the peace? Again, no. Time just doesn't allow it and, frankly, it's not that important to me. You seem to assume that because I don't listen to rap/hip hop that I don't like to dance. Excuse me, but that's again an awfully big assumption to make. There are also dozens of different styles of music that afford one the opportunity to dance-- Erasure happens to be one of my favorite all-time groups. Traditional Mexican Ballet Folklorico also makes me move (having danced in groups for over 4 years), but I don't choose to listen to it on the radio. And I certainly wouldn't want to listen to it after Paula Cole! Does that mean I don't like it or am closeminded? I think not. Finally, regarding your definition of alternative. If that's the definition of alternative that you're using, then NOTHING is alternative, except perhaps some obsure, independent singer/songwriter who's not on a major label and whose message is global peace and marxism. Given that rap/hip hop is one of the most lucrative musical genres right now, and that it's accepted as legitimate and is as popular as it is, I wouldn't classify it as alternative per your definition. I agree that music labeled as such right now IS popular top 40--as it was in the early 80s. Music goes in cycles and right now it's its cycle to be popular again. So, as I said, if I offended, I apologize. I certainly didn't mean to. The fact that it was taken to the context that it was, however, is evidence of something more going on. The fact that you, in particular, decided to put that last notice on the list, with your not-so-subtle insults, says something else. Am I angry? No. Am I insulted? No. To each his/her own. I do appreciate, however, that you decided to talk TO me. It was refreshing.
